Just a sobering reminder not to get complacent about basic safety measures:

Mind you he says that he was doing everything wrong - basement, no ventilation, had already gone through 15 cans of butane (!) - so don't freak out. Your turkey baster in the back yard should be fine. But, you know, it's not like making a cup of coffee.

Oh my... IMHO, nobody deserves to get burned like that but he was asking for it... he was fucking BEGGING, what a moron. Social Darwinism at it's finest.

'snowta: My rig came with the thin Ti, and those def look the same. In fact, Dosa is sending me two pieces of .063 Ti as soon as he's able to cut it... That was the problem, he wasn't able to cut it. I'm grabbing a few more dishes and perhaps another curve to match the skull inline... or maybe one of dosa's skull domes, how dope would that be? Hah. Good idea on the curve... They work much better on bubs.

SM55: 10%-15% is average, 20% is good, 25% is great, 30% is almost unheard of... someone on GD was speaking of yields near 30%. My highest yield was the 'wreck @ 20%, and I have no other way to describe it other than cleaning products lol. I've had trainwreck that smells/tastes like pinesol, lemon pledge... I'm dreading the day I come across a strain that smells like simple green LOL

There's debate on glass basters vs SS basters, I'm gonna pick up a few SS basters when I get a chance, something about less oil sticking to the inside of the extractor? Not sure. But I wanna see if I get better yields... cuz that never hurts lol.

That makes sense. Sucks you gotta deal with a wrap job. They look like they'd be a pain in the ass to do. Bit freak got a huuuuge shipment of blazemaster curves in and there's a couple that look pretty sick. They put it all under his real name which is Josh s so I didn't know it was him right away. Still waitin on my diffy and slide.

That guy was askin for trouble. I'm scared of even getting a blowout. I can't even imagine turning into a fireball. I think that would take some of the fun outta it.

Which he admits himself. Mind you this incident was from a few years ago, and you have to give him credit for taking the pictures and sharing them with the world. After all, there's need for anyone else to go through this (or worse).

True, but I mean this is the kind of shit that leaves me no hope for the future generations... if you dont have the common sense to figure out hmmmm flammable gasses + enclosed space + static electricty = BOOM then uhh... well I really think we need some chlorine for the gene pool.

I'm glad he's learned his lesson, ALWAYS blast outside in a well ventilated area. There's a reason why they put disclaimers before BHO tutorials... this shit is dangerous if you make it dangerous, it's perfectly safe if you're smart about it.

Well to be fair, there have always been people who've acted carelessly, and there always will be. What gives me hope for future generations is this kind of information sharing, where we can not only tell each other what's dangerous, but also show the results when warnings aren't heeded. Pictures like these are far more visceral and shocking than yet another collection of "Thou Shalt Not" commandments. This way many more people really can learn from far fewer mistakes.

So if something goes wrong but you live to tell the tale, then please, do tell the tale - indeed show it if you can.

has anyone seen these before? they arent made anymore, but were popular back in the 70's i guess. i stumbled across it tonight. what it is, is its like a coffeemaker sort of, theres a heater in the bottom you heat up a solution of alcohol, and some sulferic acid, (just from what ive gathered so far reading on this) and that heats up and vaporizes, then you place ice around the small tray under the aluminum part. as the alcohol vapors condense they drip down through a basket holding your herbs which extract all the oils from it. looks intresting, im going to raed some more on it, and find out if one of these would be easily produced. its called an iso2 extractor.

edit: going to copy and past some from a different forum. hope this helps a little bit in understanding this product.

The ISO2 was a fairly safe extracting device with a light bulb under the base connected to a dimmer switch, similar to a lava lamp. Alcohol (99.7% isopropyl) was placed in the basin of the metal container and heated by the bulb underneath. Suspended above the alcohol was a halforb mesh strainer filled with marijuana. When alcohol is heated it turns into a vapor and rises, so in the ISO2 the vapor ?melted? the resin, which then dropped into the alcohol. The vapors came out of a twelveinch tower of carbon, inert and odorless. After 30 to 60 minutes all the resin was transferred to the remaining alcohol in the basin, and then the alcohol evaporated into the air or was heated gently until only the THC oil remained.
You use 1-2 drops of Sulphuric Acid for every cup of Alcohol/Oil mix and heat 1-2 hours. You use a little more acid and add time if you are doing a "full load" of finely ground stuff vs. loosley cramming a couple ozs of leaves for a small run.

Also, if you want to clean the oil up, simply mix your neutralized alcohol solution (after adding baking soda) to an equivalent measure of water and stir well. Then add about a 1/3 equivalent measure of toluene (an industrial solvent available on inet) and stir well. Quickly place all in a separatory funnel and stir well (A Ring Stand to hold the funnel is VERY helpful). Let it sit for a few minutes, and the Alcohol/Water/Chlorophyll/Contaminant (the "green" part of the mixture) will separate out to the bottom of the funnel. You should now have a light greenish layer on the bottom of the Sep Funnel, a layer of Toluene is next, and your oil is mostly floating on the top of that. Simply bleed off the alcohol/chlorophyll etc mixture, put it back in the iso2 with a glass in the soxhlet basket and reclaim your alcohol on low heat for your next run.

Throw the "green slime" left in the bucket away, its just water and contaminants. Now separate the toluene/oil mixture with the iso2, then when you have most of it separated, open the iso2 in a well ventilated area on high and burn off the remainder of the toluene. You'll be left with beautiful black oil with none of that crappy green tinted plant "goo" in it. Hope this helps.
Ya, also, remember to use REAGENT GRADE Sulphuric Acid, NOT the stuff you put in car batteries... and DON'T FORGET to neutralize it after heating with 1/8 teaspoon+\- of FRESH baking soda per drop of acid. (just add it like adding a pinch of salt to food....) just add slowly and stir until it quits fizzing, then add 1 more 1/8 teaspoon to make darn sure.

The toluene process will eliminate any extra soda taste.....

QBit,

The article you linked doesnt mention cannabis, extraction, butane, or anything I can related directly to oil. Do you have more info you could link up?

As for the Isomerizers.....theres a reason they stayed in the 70's, along with disco.

Yeah well that article was published as a news story, before the cause was known. Someone (I guess another Vancouverite) posted a comment below some time after that article was published, mentioning what had happened. And indeed I was referred to that picture by a post on another forum:

https://tokecity.com/forums/showpost.php4?p=776662&postcount=2

So no actual proof, just anecdotes, but it sure looks like what could happen after many a blasted can in a small apartment.

The TC thread doesnt validate Hempseed's post at all, not sure where you got the impression it did. The whole thread on TC is referring to the original post, about the garage in Edmonton they blew a door off.
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/news...southwest+garage+explosion/2429206/story.html

The picture in that story, where the police state they have evidence the kids were making hashish oil, tells a very different story than the one you posted up above. Even producing the kind of fireball to blow a garage door off its hinges requires pretty large amounts of butane. The gaping hole in the side of the house is an explosion orders of magnitude bigger than the garage explosion in edmonton.

Im no pyrotechnic expert, but I feel like the amount of butane that would be necessary to cause the whole in the side of the house in the first pic is pretty inordinate.

I'm not talking about the Edmonton case at all, or the rest of that thread. Rather, I was referring to Hempseeds post I linked to.

Now I don't know why, but last time I checked the story from the Vancouver Sun I linked to before had user comments following it. But they don't seem to be there now. However, when they were, there was one that was posted a couple of weeks or so after the article, stating that it wasn't a meth lab, as some had suspected, but a BHO blast. Many, many cans obviously.

So I'm sorry I don't have proof, but I find it pretty believable. I'm no pyrotechnics expert either, but I'm pretty scientifically literate. If my calculations are correct, one can of tane will produce about a third of a cubic metre of gas. Enough of those in a small flat, plus a spark, is going to make for some serious expansive force - and it's not brickwork we're dealing with. You can see that there isn't much charring at all inside the flat, suggesting a low heat explosion - like the one that produced the large an unsightly but relatively superficial leg burns in the earlier pic. The real charring is on the outside above, where the ball of flame would have rolled, and finished burning properly.

Now blowing the side off a building might take more than a garage door, but who's to say that the garage explosion wasn't considerably more powerful than it needed to be? I don't know the details of explosive force, but if you get enough tane in a small enough area and toss in a spark, you're going to do some major damage. A 300C (550F) increase from room temperature is going to double the volume of a quantity of gas. If there's no escape route, this will translate to a doubling of pressure. 1 atmosphere of air pressure is around 100 kPa or about 10 tons per square metre (~14 pounds per square inch). Even a fraction of that is a lot for a flimsy plaster and weatherboard wall to take.

Don't worry SM, I'm not trying to stop people from blasting tane - I myself love BHO like nothing else. But I know that eagerness, among other things, can lead people to cut corners and take greater risks, so I feel it's healthy to know what kinds of consequences you may be facing if you really get dumb about it.
