Now you can call that a mini cloud boobs, hehehe. :D

Great looking Hi, Jack Mormon! Did you get the VV power suply and the non-VV or just the VV?

Can't wait to get mine, i saw that JRRTokin got his about 2 months after ordering so i expect mine in about a month.

I was basically sold when I first laid eyes on yours, perhaps Alan should give you a commission ;)

vorrange,

I received the VV power supply. I already have a regulated CRZ power supply and the big, unregulated Underdog power supply so I am covered on a variety of compatible power supplies.

Just finished the 1st session and (don't tell Alan :o) I used my Underdog stem with a 14mm GONG whip adaptor stuck in the end. My first impressions are WOW. This thing really does heat up in 5 minutes although I let it go about a half hour before use. I started the VV on about 75% and took it up to about 90% on the last hits. The temperatures changes fast enough that it seems to work well with starting low and going as high as you want. The ABV was a little darker than I like.... this unit is going to require some extensive and thorough testing!

The workmanship is superb just like all of the others I have seen pics of. One thing that pics do not convey is the precision job Alan does on the GONG turbo tubes. They are thick, flawless, and pretty darn amazing looking. This is going to sound cheesy, but I didn't use one for the first session because they are so freakin pretty.

iloveboobs & J R R,

Do you guys run your HIs 24/7, just heat up when needed, or leave it on a low temp and crank up a few minutes before use? My first curious question....

I am usually very patient but, goodness gracious, I am acting like a kid with the HI. I want it and I want it now lol. Alan seems like you have hit a home run here!

VapeVoice,

ilovebOObs

can i stick my male joint in there?
mine is pretty much on all the time and set to my favorite temp. i just never know when its HI time :)

also 75% on the dial doesn't mean 75% of the power. i notice max voltage is reached around the 75% mark on the dial.
@OTA i'm still trying to pay Alan back for the countless hours of enjoyment :D

My bocote unit gets pretty hot on the exterior at the temp I like for vaping, so I usually drop it down to about 50% when i'm not using it. Then I pack a bowl, take the first hit and turn the unit up to 100%. 50% is hot enough for a large cloud with a fresh bowl. After I turn it up to 11, the HI gradually rises in temperature, just about exactly fast enough for me to extract the rest of the bowl with additional hits. In other words, the HI auto-magically adjusts to the temp it needs to be for each subsequent hit. Pretty nifty.

I'm actually only switching mine on for use. I have other log vapes at home, including Alan's TT, that I leave on 24/7. As the HI is so quick to heat up I just wait till it's ready and hit one of the of the logs in the meanwhile if I'm desperate.
I am a little worried about the wood constantly contracting and expanding from the changing heat, but only time will tell if it is detrimental. I'm actually quite interested on Alan's take on this. I'm sure different woods will be effected slightly differently, but what do you think about the dark cherry specifically Alan, can it stand up to the constantly changing thermal expansion and contraction or should I be running it constantly, lowering the voltage when not in use?

I almost just bought an Arizer solo on amazon for $137 just now, but the version being sold by that seller is m106 so I cancelled the order. I think I can and should wait for the HI.

I asked Alan to see if it is feasible to make these with Cumaru wood (a.k.a. Brazilian Teak), which has a Class A fire resistance rating (the same rating given to concrete and steel).

jackmormon - Glad to see your dark cherry HI arrived safely and you are enjoying it. You will find the right temperature and technique that works the best. I will probably be turning some more of the dark cherry units. The wood is working out really well. One of the chunks of cherry I got has some very crazy grain. It will make some very nice units.
It is alright if you use an underdog stem with the HI. I imagine you will sometime use a HI roasting tube with your underdog. That is the nice thing about them being interchangeable.
Also glad you are happy with the all glass turbo tubes. Almost sounds like you are describing a diamond rather than a glass tube. lol The size for the glass tubing just worked out perfect. The technique for grinding took a bit of practice. It would take a pretty good hit to break one. You won't break one now that you have a spare. Sort of an insurance policy.
I'm sure you will have fun trying all the tube combinations.

I still find myself using the silicone turbo tube the most of all my tubes. The air flow is so good and a little squeeze/roll to the silicone stirs the material. Cleaning is super easy and you get some really nice hash from the glass.

bOObs - Your videos are the best. Thanks for sharing. Fun to see how many ways you can use the HI. Glad you are really enjoying it. Definitely fanning the flames of desire for the HI. Wish there had been something like it when I first started combusting.

Thanks VapeVoice. I can imagine how you are feeling if I were in your shoes. When there is something I like, I want it now. The HI is getting better with each one that I make. You will be getting a much better unit than if I had just continued making my original design. Hope I won't have to make you wait too much longer.

J.R.R. - I have found that the wood expansion and contraction is more of a factor of humidity than temperature. I'm not sure of the long term affect of cycling the wood through humid and dry conditions. It may just take heating the unit to get the core tight in the wood again. I just leave my dark cherry unit plugged in 24/7. It is amazing to see how dark the wood gets. The bottom part is not as dark as the wood subject to constant heat.

Thanks staticsunn.

The Cumaru wood sounds amazing Nytron. Very similar to IPE. I spend more time sharpening tools when I turn IPE. Very tough stuff.

Just sharing some experience about the expanding of the wood and the loosening of cores:

I have a loose core in my UD (probably my own fault, I completely ass-raped that thing over and over). It's almost tight when cold, but looser when it's at operating temperature. I was gonna put some thin metal shims between the core and the wood to tighten things up a bit, but I'm afraid it will only make things worse when it cools down.

Anyways, I had mine on 24/7 for weeks when I first got it, and I can't be entirely certain but I think my core started loosening when I first let it cool down again after it spend several weeks on operating temps. My UD is made out of Ash btw, to complete the info :)

Dropped my email in today, may pm for good measure as well.
What is the size of the waiting list and how quickly do you make the units?

^^^ waiting list is likely large, and Alan takes appropriate time to ensure each unit is fitting for his own use. You've hopped on the right list, my friend. But patience is key.

I can't speak for Alan, but I believe he has very little time and would rather spend that time making HIs versus getting the website back up at this time. But I could be wrong. In the meantime, enjoy some of bOObs' vids on this thread. They show off the HI in many ways.

Just checked the Toasty Top website and it is still up. Not sure what is going on. Still don't have any information about the HI on the website. It has kind of just developed and been discussed in this thread. It should all be put in one place though.

Forgot to mention that is a neat way to use your variable voltage power supply OKcomputer. By the time you are ready for the next higher temperature, the HI is there.
Sort of the same way with the 5 minute heat up time. It will take you 5 minutes for the grinding and preparation. The HI will be ready when you are.
I prefer to just leave them continuously energized. Then they are always ready.

Interesting observations about the core loosing on your UD OTA. Did your UD unit come with a clip holding the core in place?

Alan,

@Alan, is it possible that the metal body inside the wood will prevent the core from becoming looser since the metal is a good heat conductor? Thus rendering this discussion obsolete, at least when it comes to the HI.

Not as far as I can tell Alan. Dave agreed that shimming it would probably be the best way to counteract the movement (before I noticed that it tightened up again when it cooled down) so it probably hasn't got one.

Did you have a chance to read my email yet btw?
