PBW & the Chemistry of Clean

EDIT: Why is it called the shake and break method? I always clean with ISO/SALT but never break anything during the process. I did not read the OP because it was so old, so my bad for the first post.
We call it the shake and break because when you're shaking you might lose your grip and break your piece. PBW allows you to fill it up and let it soak overnight. Go to bed, wake up, rinse, and you're good. Also no fumes!

Got the pbw today !
25min soak, 2tblspoons. I could of used less, and I will next time, but boy did it do the job! Came out sparkly clean and that problem area disappeared . There was a small white ring near the perc but I'm sure it will come off with another rinse. Thanks tdub! This thread is awesome

I use PBW in my bubbler maybe once a week now. I also use this other stuff, One Step, which bills itself as a no-rinse cleaner (also for the brewing industry).. though I do rinse it like crazy.. I use this about once a week. The other times, I just do a hot water rinse.

The active ingredient in One Step is the same as Oxiclean, sodium percarbonate. The One Step also has some citric acid, which is kind of confusing as that would kind of balance out the pH of the solution...regardless, the One Step is safer than the Oxiclean.

Being in Europe I have had great success with the oxi clean and calgon mix but also found a fine film of residue around the stem(s) sometimes.
Will head to the shop for Citric acid and organic dishwashing powder to mix in, thanks guys. :science:

Use really hot water, less PBW, rinse really, really, well. Some have used a citric acid rinse, vinegar would work I think . . .

ok, try a final vinegar rinse then, this has to be a hard water issue of some kind since it is so sporadic, I still can't duplicate it here in my lab.

Try it, it cant hurt. Its the acid you want, some were using citric acid, but acetic acid should be a suitable substitute.

I was thinking about some kind of sugar residue from the apples, but I suppose that's a null factor if you're washing with hot water right after.

Finally ended up trying it on my Sublimator atomizer and didn't have any issues. I still had to do some scraping inside but it at least did as good a job as ISO. I'm hoping to see more of a difference with subsequent cleanings if it does end up doing a slightly better job at cleaning (ie getting stuff the ISO doesn't).

For glass cleaning it did an awesome job on my friend's combustion bong as well as my vape bongs. I didn't have a stopper around so I used a 14>18mm adapter and an Arizer Solo bong stem with a cap on.

Alright I did the vinegar rinse, now I'm doing a pbw 15min soak with very hot water followed by a ISo rinse and finally a vinegar rinse.

If the piece is clean except for the mystery film, keep your dwell times on the PBW short. I never go over 5 minutes.

Clean as a whistle

Who has experience with NACE?
How is it compared to rezblock?

Yeah thats one thing I forget to mention, PBW gets your glass so clean that fingerprints and little imperfections show up better . . . :peace:

Here is the right thread for that discussion: http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/rezblock.8060/

SO far I think the folks using the NACE are happy, I haven't exhausted my RezBlock supply yet . . . :)

After my first bottle of RezBlock was finished I switched to NACE and have never looked back.
To me, it works as well or better than RB & was cheaper for more product...extremely hard to argue with those pluses. :)

Try it...I think you'll be quite happy...:2c::tup:
