Thanks for the links but if I'm reading that right that stuff is $7/foot for the 3/8" ID? Thats even more than the OEM tubing. I was hoping to find something a little more economical
When it comes to products that involve my body, I personally have a much higher price tolerance. My choice of whip is primarily driven by safety, not cost. McMaster also has everything in one place and extremely fast shipping, so I’m willing to pay a little more for that convenience.
Anything cheaper than platinum-cured silicone and you’re likely dealing with silicone additives or a non-silicone material, each of which present their own problems. Besides questionable purity, vinyl is stiff, TPE isn’t as heat tolerant, etc.
It’s up to you what you use, the same website (McMaster) has other silicone products that are cheaper (and less pure) if you want to look at those.
If you do choose a cheaper silicone, the expandable sleeving will keep the outside from collecting lint, and keep the tube looking cleaner for longer.
There may very well be a safer material that’s cheaper than platinum-cured silicone, but given the chemistry I doubt it. If you do want to look for an alternative material I would suggest starting by looking at medical distributors to see what tubing they use, e.g.
