I use a torch too, when I was still using a regular lighter I would still get a little combustion once in a while, now that's very, very rare
very first time trying a torch I burned it and avoided it since, untill I was without regular lighters and I only had the torch lighter around, and I never went back to regular lighters
I just point the torch at the hole, but keep the inner blue part of the flame outside the hole, only the lighter blue outer flame goes a bit in
also you have to inhale a lot faster as with a regular flame, and I always move the flame to not get the heat build up in one spot
enjoying my VG now(handcarved, walnut)
ps. I have a cheap torch from dealextreme wich works great for only 3 dollar, only downsides are refilling(has to be from exactly the right angle) and the fact when the gastank becomes less filled I have to turn up the flamesize(actual flamesize doesn't increase that much in this case) to keep the flame(otherwise it stutters), also outside with wind I have to turn it up a bit to keep it burning(but that's a lot better then with bic lighters that you sometimes can't get lit even while trying the most lidiculous ways to sheler it from wind, wich is also the reason torch lighters are called stormlighters in dutch, translated ofcourse)
