Well in any case it would appear that they have stopped using that adhesive if that was indeed what it was (excuse shitty pic quality)

Tough to say exactly what material is on that grommet but id safely say that it's neither rubber or your average high temp silicone, the texture is somewhere in the middle. Although the pics aren't clear enough to really tell there is absolutely zero signs of melting on the grommet and not even a hint of burnt smell, while i dont doubt that v4h's unit may have been constructed differently and possibly in an unsafe manner after taking a look at my unit it has pretty well eased my fears of this issue on MY (newer) unit

Actually the pictures although not perfectly focused shows pretty well what I am seeing throug that "hard angled" crack, and in that opened unit....
I was looking for something further.. some separate additional ring!

I do have a question now for vape4health:
When did you get your unit, and through which dealer? (only if you care to share this information.)
I would like to know if there have been changes along the way, and if dealers are keeping up with any upgrades.

SF thanks for taking the time to do the pics.

Vito, I believe it was from Vape World not really sure tho I order a good bit of stuff, I didn't try for a replacement because I opened it up. I got it right around Oct. 2010. I really hope they did change it because I liked the way the vape worked just didn't like the awful taste.

Vitolo are you saying that link is the same high temp glue that Vapir uses on the no2.

No I am in no way saying that anyone uses that sealant.. I was using it as an example of high temp adhesives in general!
As for my questions.. I was figuring on when I remember there having been a change in the processing, that was posted about many many months back.
I believe that they changed processing on units around November 2010, and then updated manufacturing and packaging in around jan 2011.
Many here will recall that at that time, I was in close back and forth communication with Vapir concerning a warranty and other issues, and the responses here and elsewhere initiated change, in production.

so im reporting back after using my NO2 heavily for several days now....

two things i think need to be said:

1. this unit is extremely efficient and i actually seem to get the best results across the board when I use smaller amounts, about 2/3rds of a spoonful if u use the little plastic measuring spoon that comes with it....when i place larger amounts in there, i get thinner hotter hits and seem to have a harder time getting it right. by larger amounts i mean packing the chamber 3/4ths full as it says to do....i recommend less and you will get just as many good vape hits and much better experience.

2. this unit tastes awesome! im amazed out how much flavor I get with the NO2, even low quality mexi brick will taste good for the first few minutes. u can start at lower temps like 355 and throttle it up as you go to maintain flavorful hits throughout the vape session i dont like to go above 380 on my device but maybe my runs a tad hot. and i call them sessions because if your using the NO2 by urself or maybe with one other person, even a tiny pinch will give u atleast 10mins of some decent vapors.

basically i highly recommend this thing....theres a tiny bit of a learning curve nothing like wat u read about with the MFLB....to me it seems its mostly learning how to adjust the amount, grind, and pack to each type of weed as the NO2 produces different results when you adjust one or more of these variables. for example i have like 3 different kinds right now and each one needs a little bit of different temps, grind, etc for best results....

however, all around the NO2 is pretty damn fool proof and its simple and for these reasons I'm considering the NO2 above all other options as an xmas present for an old time Jsmokiing combusting relative.

i lurked for years and sold my iolite last year out of frustration (the piece of shit screwed up more often than it worked properly, and it wasn't even broken). i've had my NO2 for about a day and it's saving me. i was smoking 4-6 spliffs a day, no good, mad wasteful too.

btw i'm representing team 172 Degrees for Best Temperature of 2011

Wow, that is low... but I bet it gives a great taste!!!
(I do as low as 180)

for whatever reason i was under the impression that going that high was not recommended. about to it out for my morning pack :D

btw, this thing really is great. i've been using just my friend's volcano for about a year now, and this is honestly the only unit i've used that's got as little of a learning curve, which rules because i can use it with other people and all that. plus i really need to give it credit for its subtlety - i had a 20 minute session to myself, friend knocked on the door, came inside, and had literally no idea i'd been vaping :ninja:

It is highly recommended, if you want relief for any discomfort.
I usually vape at 375, with my low temp being 369
375 F = 192 C
and when I use 375 (192).... when I am done, I often take it to 390 for a couple last pulls.
The Vapir NO2 can not go above 400
Combustion occurs at 420

many people use 400 (204 Cels) as their preset temp!
(I dont I like 369-375)

Got a NO2 that I paid only $100-ish for on amazon. I realized I was risking it because of the warranty/sub $180 thing.

Soon after ordering, I read all this stuff on FC about the plastic smell, and I knew I wasn't in for any goods news.

Got the NO2!! Open it up - and sniff the inside. Smelled REEKED like liquid rubber (or the soft, cheap kind)!!!!!!! Fuck....

Let it 'burn' off at a low temp, for about 30 minutes. Guess what, smell still there. I knew it, I fucking hate this thing now.

What I still don't understand is, can you "burn off" a rubber smell? You can't. You will only burn off more rubber. $100 was spent for an expensive lesson in doing a tiny bit of more research first, and not playing risky games like "I sure hope I get one that isn't screwy".

My advice to anyone - don't try to buy the NO2 for sub 180$, since if it's fucked up (and good chances it will be), you will regret it.

And for anyone that doesn't notice the smell - either you got lucky and got one without the rubber, or you don't mind inhaling possibly the most toxic shit in this world. :/

My girlfriend said something that made me think twice. "What if it's a fake/counterfeit one"? :uhoh:

We'll :) I tried to get you on another vape but you were in a rush and on a budget and it was a/b/c :).
I guess that is why your unit is 100$ and whitout warranty :). Anyone with a non-smelly no2 bought it for 100$ ?

You guys should really do your homework and read back in this thread!
A little over a year ago there were problems
Way back in April the problems were resolved.. In May I wrote about this....
The reason Vapir is so staunch about "Authorized Dealers", was due to Amazon and others having
"Rogue" units... Units that were built as clones to rip off the market.
They used rubber , crappy plastic and glue.
To resolve this issue... Vapir did a recall.
Anyone that did not turn in all units for exchange was no longer on list of Authorized Dealers.
So since then....
I have been SCREAMING on this thread.... to NOT go for an Amazon bargain. :/

and yet still I read these posts regularly from people who won't listen... or won't read.

My NO2 gets used daily, and smells great, as does the NO2 of every MMJ patient I know that uses one.

If you want a Vapir NO2... One of my favorite vapes, and one of the most efficient and foolproof... PLEASE do not go for a bargain. They are 179.95, and can be found occasionally at 20 or 30% off from Vapir.
You will not save money by buying an NO2 from a seller that is not authorized by Vapir.
You will likely get burned.

ya, dude i really feel for ya, that really sucks....however, i'm really starting to wonder if Vitolo may be correct about something here regarding the smell issue and that is USER ERROR.

did u read the manual? did you read any of the recent pages of posts in this thread??

reason I ask is because if you had done that, I dont think you would have "burned" it off at low temp before using the NO2 for the first time. if you had read the instructions or this thread, you would see that you should only have soaked the tubing in some warm water, and maybe taken the top piece off and apart to "air out" while it charged up for the first time which takes a couple hours basically. however, following advice I did NOT let my unit heat up and "burn off" while charging up for the first time and this is where I think user error may be to blame.
it makes sense why this is such a bad and misguided idea.....
first of all, if there really was some residue/whatever causing the smell, how and why would "burning it off" help?? please explain how that would even help??
second, the NO2 is NOT meant to be on and running(especially for extended periods) without herb in the chamber and the top cap mouthpiece on and secured in place, sealing the chamber.

by leaving the top off and open while its ON and running, the units temp sensor will think its much cooler than it really is and will continue to engage the heating element or whatever its called. this will cause the unit to run much hotter than it should and could potentially be burning or melting something inside the unit and causing the very odor problems people are trying to prevent. also, did you soak the tubing in some warm water for a while or not?

i too was worried about the smell issues being reported by a few people....however I came here and read the thread and made my purchase through vapeworld got a good deal with a quality 4piece grinder thrown into it and they are an authorized dealer.

my unit arrived and out of the box it had little to no odor, if you pressed your nose to the device and sniffed like a dog you could pick up faint smell of new plastic/electronics but NOTHING like you are describing....however, the charger/power supply was faulty, so i ended up sending the entire unit back since it was unused. my 2nd NO2 arrived less than a week later and straight out of the box it had little to no odor either. so thats TWO brand new vapir NO2s ive personally smelled straight out of the box and neither had the smell and problem your describing. also, i had two separate friends who had tried out an NO2 at some point and neither of them relayed any smell/odor or taste issues...in fact it was the opposite my friend who has a MFLB and a VG said the NO2 tasted much better than his vapes and that was one of the reasons i went with the NO2.

now, there is also a very real possibility that there are knockoffs being made with cheaper materials, in the last 10 years or so, ive actually seen knockoffs of almost any product you can imagine, its ridiculous. outside of the western modernized countries, its even crazier you can literally find ANYTHING you would want knockoff, or bootleg....so i wouldnt put it out of the realm of possibilities. in fact, i remember seeing some knockoffs of the older VAPIR models and it was like a direct replica of the vapir Air One(from the outside except different colors). so again, i could be completely wrong about the user error here and maybe you and your GF are onto something here.....

either way best of luck man!

Very very true ktx49....
I never even got that far reading the post... I freaked and stopped reading at the word AMAZON (at least where the NO2 is concerned)
ktx49 just said a mouthful guys....
Just where did anyone read to "burn off" smells..
Where did ANYONE read to Open unit and turn it on?

I read the thread.. and see many times:
"Open unit while it charges for the first time to air it out. Do not turn unit on while it is open"

You can not burn "OFF" a smell... You can sure as heck "Bake one in"... that is, you can make a smell permanent by heating something that has an unpleasant odor (like using the tube for your NO2 before washing it.... the new plastic smell will "bake in"

Thanks man! But I think I should mention

#1. The No2 doesn't come with a manual. The "quick start" guide mentions nothing about burning/soaking stuff. I got all that info on my own.

#2. I'll bet anyone ANYTHING that the smell I am smelling (liquid/spongy rubber - sort of like a car tire smell) CANNOT be 'burned' off. If anything, it would increase.

#3. If anyone has any doubts that these are smelling weirdly, just buy one of the ones on amazon for $100 or so. If you get one that DOESN'T smell like a burnt car tire inside, I will trade you for mine - THAT DOES smell like it! :)

wow see, vitolo posted while i was writing that wall but i guess theres a very good possibility you are experiencing what he is describing....think about it man, why would someone be able to sell something so much cheaper than everyone else and more importantly, why would they sell it that much cheaper???

i know you've heard it a million times but it never hurts to say it again; if its too good to be true....

1- Every NO2 does come with a large and complete manual! You further prove the point about "UNAUTHORIZED Sellers"... you also just proved that you got a ROGUE unit.. one that was made by someone else... or else they would have an NO2 manual to insert in box.
2-I already agreed you do not "burn off smells"
3-We do not doubt you. Why would we buy one from Amazon, when this entire thread was spent telling us not to?
We believe your unit STINKS!
That is why we have been preaching relentlessly here to NOT do what you have done....
Next time read a bit more.

I am truly sorry this happened to you.
Ripoffs like this are what turn folks off to vaping!

1. That is not a good sign. both of my NO2s did come with a very nice instruction manual as well as a quick start guide....can you post a picture or describe in detail everything you received from this amazon seller?? maybe this well help identify these knockoffs.

#2. I'll bet anyone ANYTHING that the smell I am smelling (liquid/spongy rubber - sort of like a car tire smell) CANNOT be 'burned' off. If anything, it would increase.

2. I'm not sure if you read my entire post...but that is my exact point....so i'm asking what was the point still proceeding to "burn off" your unit if you admit it wouldnt do anything but make it worse?? (like i said)

#3. If anyone has any doubts that these are smelling weirdly, just buy one of the ones on amazon for $100 or so. If you get one that DOESN'T smell like a burnt car tire inside, I will trade you for mine - THAT DOES smell like it!

3. No thanks, i did my homework and used my noggin....if these amazon/etc NO2 units were a legitimate deal why isnt everyone purchasing it from them???

theres a lot to say about being thrifty and being smart with your money but theres an invisible line you need to avoid crossing....its when you start costing yourself more money in the end by being too thrifty.

Hey ktx49,

Although I have my doubts that there are fakes out there - how can I tell if this is indeed the real thing? I also realize they might have made ones faulty, or with that rubber ring that was shown earlier to have been melted off.

If the same factory that made these just released 'more', how would you know the difference? I have heard too many stories about the same factory selling the exact thing cheaper.

Mine has a serial # on the bottom, near where you insert the battery.

I will take pictures of it, pretty sure there was no manual although maybe I did read the manual and mistook it for a quick start guide (seemed to have just a few pages, and same crap upside down in spanish or something).

EDIT: I didn't soak the tubing because I didn't want to use the tubing (yet). Other than that I don't remember the manual saying anything about prepping this thing, like a burn-off time etc.

And PPS.. I don't feel too bad - $100 - meh... But yeah this will suck for anyone else that hasn't read FC, and buys one off amazon

well, for starters can you provide the stuff i asked for previously? so u dont have to scroll through the wall again, i asked if you could provide pictures of your unit, as it came, etc with packaging and all stuff and if not, can you atleast list in detail how your NO2 came and what exactly was included with it.

If the same factory that made these just released 'more', how would you know the difference? I have heard too many stories about the same factory selling the exact thing cheaper.

this happens all the time....someone who is manufacturing a large portion of a product will get the idea of either marketing the same stuff out or manufacturing their own product since they dont have to spend money on R&D, testers, etc etc etc.....for example, very often you can get generic medication that is made in the exact same factorys by the exact same people using the same molds, etc as the main brand name, but the generics are much much cheaper sometimes the only difference being the code imprint placed on the medication. its cheaper for many reasons but mostly what i listed above, however in the case of medications, it is strictly regulated by the FDA so everything is scrutinized the same, generic and name brand.

someone could be using the NO2s shells or whatever and then using cheaper components, or assembling it differently with different materials etc and then selling it trying to pass it off as the real thing....

ive also heard of some unscrupulous stuff where manufacturers will knowingly sell defect or sub par products out the back door, under the table per say, for much cheaper and basically wipe their hands clean, not honoring warranties etc or backing the product.

not saying thats whats happening here.....just that people get greedy and i could also see some scenario where like a bunch of NO2s were supposed to be trashed and not be sold on the market and some disgruntled employee or janitor/security gaurd grabs em all out of the trash can and decides to take em all to craigslist and ebay.

At work - so I hope to post pictures tonight.

I am 100% sure this is either a clone, or just the old model. So - I won't be getting it fixed, since the warranty will not be honored. Which brings me to this.

Is it worth opening it up to try to remove/replace the peice(s) that are producing the smell? Maybe I can just fix this thing myself so I am not paranoid about inhaling gene-altering chemicals.

Would be cool to spend 1 hour fixing, and back to normal...instead of trying to sell this and pass off the problem to someone else who may/may not care.

I bought a sub-$180 NO2 from eBay in an auction from a trustworthy reseller who normally sells them at $179 and has excellent reviews. I've been very happy with my NO2, and it did have that factory smell too it (don't know about a rubber smell, definitely a factory smell though). So I opened it up, turned it on, plugged it in, laid the two parts down on a windowsill and put a fan on them for like three hours before I used it. By the time I picked it back up three hours later the smell was almost nonexistent.

So even if you didn't get a fake/old unit it's still not the end of the world, if you didn't air it out like this before you used it I can't promise anything but good luck!
