@Madcap79 is correct(again )When you crank the dimmer back to 100%, how long is the heat up time? Does it still take 20 minutes? Or does having it running at a low voltage at all times help reduce heat up time since it's always kept warm.
Customs will most likely not be cheaper. I think that a regular Dog is a better choice for you. The VVPS will be easier to find and the glass stems may be better for a sharing environment. Although you could get enough nylon stems to let everyone have their own. Then you just have to pass the Dog around. You may benefit from waiting for their 'refresh'. Also, they tend to have sales from time to time that can be worth the wait. Just a few things to think about.Hi Underdogs! I've been looking at UD's for a few months now (I've been using a mflb since before I heard of Underdog) and my friend recently got an Enano that's just spectacular. Super smooth, way more efficient, and it whitewalls glass like no vape I've seen before. I figure that all logs are more or less similar and I definitely like the idea of an UD.
Personally, I know that I'd only turn it on when I was gonna use it, not 24/7. I may end up turning it on when I get home from work and leaving it on until I go to bed, but even that is like 5 or 6 hours a day maximum. Also, I'd almost only ever use it through glass. Sure I'd occasionally do direct draw, but only ever by myself so I'd only want to use the nylon stem anyway. I'd probably most frequently use it by myself, but I'd also probably be using it in a group as frequently as every one or two weekends, so if the nylon is a true one-hitter then I may want the glass assuming it's a bigger bowl.
My questions are given these use patterns, would you guys recommend the 17v econodog or the 12v underdog? My main fears are the longevity of the device and wanting the bigger glass bowl for groups, but the price difference ($140 to like $235?) is significant enough that if the nylon 14mm piece will be plenty and the 17v would last/work well then I'd think twice about it.
Also, could you still use a VVPS with a 17v econodog? Given how few vapes there are currently (sorry about your hand!) could I save some money by getting a simple custom one (not exotic wood, simple shape) or would I be better off waiting until some readymade ones become avaliable?
Thanks in advance for all your help, I'm really excited!

I think the econodogs will last just as long as a regular UD.That's an interesting idea, it'd be basically the same price to get an UD or to get an econodog and 4 NonG stems! Would you expect an Econodog to last for an arbitrarily long amount of time (multiple years) if it is usually plugged in for ~5 hours a day? Or would I still be better off getting a regular UD and using glass stems with stirring and reloading for big groups.

Welcome to to the Dog Pound. Don't lose hope! Your "AhHaa" moment will come if you persevere.I just received my new Econo-dog unit a few days ago and I haven't found a sweet spot for it yet. I seem to have to take 20-30 hits to get nice and baked. I've tried adjusting the amount of herb I load into the stem (nylon stem), as well as how far i push the stem into the heating unit, but i still haven't found anything that works too well. Furthermore, when I try to take really long rips my chest and lungs just feel really shitty. I'm sure i'm still on a low point on the learning curve, but I haven't been able to get any satisfying hits that make me cough really hard or even make me take a pause to realize how high I am. Can anybody help with this? I am vaporizing much more than a bowl worth to get really high while the entire motivation behind buying this vape was to conserve.
PS - I have a D020-D coming from China which hasn't showed up yet. I am hoping this piece will make a huge difference, but I would still like to be able to straight vape from this piece -- it wasn't exactly cheap!

Is your stem clean? (Can you see the mesh clearly when you look though it?)
Are you waiting until unit is hot? (10 min heat-up time)
Are you taking slow pull that allows you to hear the material "snap" as it vapes?
Have you tried other material. (Vast differences in strains, dryness of material and cure of material)
Is material a dark coffee color after use? (dry when rubbed, not oily nor should it leave traces as you roll twixt fingers)

Some tips that help me:
YMMV
- Less is more. Don't pack too much or too tight.
- Be sure that you can draw through the stem before putting on vape.
- If it seems too hot, try pulling the stem away from the heater in small increments to find a distance that works for you.
- Rotate the stem and change the angle slightly to let the air take different "paths"
- In the beginning, I found it easier to vape very dry material. Let it dry in a session dish.
- For me, the best flavor comes from using placing a small bud(one that fits not stuffed in). (un ground) in the stem. One really tasty hit. Then stir. Then a real lung buster!
Have fun with the testing.
Are you just switching from smoke to vapor? Combustion adds effects so switching from smoke to vapor can seem like a bit of a let down at first. If this is the case I'd suggest a week long break from cannabis and then start up again the following week with vapor only.
If this isn't the case and you are already accustomed to the vapor high then @DieHard and @TeeJay1952 have some really good suggestions and tips in their posts.
Thanks for the suggestions guys!
My stem is clean, the unit is brand new.
I've had the unit plugged in for about 2 days straight now so I'm sure when I use it its properly warmed up
Initially i was drawing very hard and that was disastrous. Now i'm pulling very slowly, I do sometimes hear the bud crackling when i'm pulling.
I've tried 3 different strains and none have been better than others
After my hits the material is really dark brown, if its only golden or slightly brown i try to hit it again.
I've tried to experiment with different amounts in the stem, the amount of tamping, and the extent to which i place the nylon stem into the heat unit, but none of these manipulation have yielded anything good so far. I'm actually vaping through more weed to get the same amount of high from a bowl.
The one thing that i havent done yet is vape really dry bud. I set some of my bud out last night to dry and i want to give it a full 24 hours before i try to vape it. I'm hoping this will help.
So I stopped smoking like 3 weeks ago. in those three weeks, i periodically did dabs but thats about it. Prior to hitting this vape I hadn't hit any dry herb in 3 weeks.
Hey there Underdogs.. it's a lazy Sunday but we managed to get something productive done and put some nice Beech 'Vape Specials' up on the website. Still working on other pieces for a refresh but that will be a while yet before those are done.
It's possible that your Dog is running a little on the cool side of 'spec' but it's also possible that it's an issue with your material.. either too moist, strains that just don't produce much vapor, etc. It's always difficult to troubleshoot things over the internet. It's also possible that you haven't fully acclimated to the differences of vaping yet, as others mentioned it's not quite the same as smoking and especially dabs. That all being said it does sound like maybe your temps are a little low.
If you're still struggling after playing around with all the communities Dog suggestions then please get in touch with Underdogette so she can try and help you resolve things from a troubleshooting standpoint.
Basically posting to subscribe to the thread and say hello!!
Im completely new to log vapes, and in honesty i came for the wood but i have been reading this thread for a couple hours and im getting excited.... and a bit confused too though.
My only vapes are an Arizer EQ and an Arizer Air. These log vapes seem to be another animal entirely with different voltages, VVPS or dimmers, nylon stems working on some but glass on others and so on... Lots to learn it seems.
Just ordered a beautiful piece of buckeye burl from Snappo that i want to turn into a UD. It will take some time though as i live on military disability and have to save the funds first. But i cant wait, and it looks like there is plenty here for me to read and try and learn in the meantime!
So hello .....Ill go back to reading now
