Heya Dogs, one thing I'll be doing this year is some special runs of Dogs (litters if you will) of some various special woods that I happen to have in decent amount. Black Oak and Walnut would be some likely candidates but I also have this to consider, some Blue Pine.

What do you all think? This stuff is pretty and has some special significance as it is being selectively logged and milled personally by a close friend of mine. Thoughts?

BluePine.JPG

Though I tend to like the darker-wood dogs best, I personally like this one. I like how the black color gives a burnt/distressed look.

I know there is probably confidentiality issues involved, but I bet many prospective dog owners would LOVE to hear a little about the wood they're buying. You mention in your about section that all your wood is sustainably harvested or recycled, which is DEFINITELY a selling point for me. More info on how you came upon the wood only adds to the intimate nature of your business! Very cool.

Hey UD, sorry to bother you but did you have any luck on your hidden stash to find a piece of cocobolo large enough to make me one? Not sure how much longer PD is gonna last. Please let me know when you can. Thanks a mil.

@ I_wanted_truth - I'll see if my source for the Blue Pine will let me share their identity and if so I'll post the 'story'. :)

@ BUZZHEAD - sorry man I looked high and low yesterday and it doesn't look like we have any Cocobolo even close to that thick, I had hoped we might but no such luck.

Well heck now gang! Many of you have probably guessed where the Blue Pine came from! Who else talks about Blue Pine on this forum?
I am glad to be able to supply Dave with some very pretty wood. All the Blue Pine is basically recycled because once a pine log starts to Blue(decay to a degree) there is not a mill around that will buy the log. Often they get pushed into a pile to rot or maybe burn. Blued PP does not even make good firewood as it usually is pretty wet. The piece Dave got has been cut and in our shop for a couple years so is thoroughly air dried.
I will be getting some more shipped out soon as I first wanted to see if the wood would even work for a UD. We have some more colors in what is left. We have a small bandmill(sawmill) so all the wood is cut here after being skidded in from our woodlot.
I also have some Western Red Cedar and some nice Cherry wood we may send down to the dog pound if Dave wants to try any of it.

This all happened without a plan. I had some VVPS cords and some other little stuff I wanted to send but decided to use a flat rate box. There was just too much extra room in that box so I threw in some wood.

That Blued PP is much happier being with Dave. He gave it a new life.

Do you know when you will have your website restocked UD?

Oh cool, that Western Red Cedar is awesome. Very strong and hard. I would love to see a UD made of it. My grandpa used to tell me when I was a kid that termites would break their teeth on that stuff. Lol. Very pretty wood.

I'm likin' that stem you made too! Awesome  Careful we might have to hire you to come make some of our accessories!

Also, we've been getting quite a few requests for certain length glass liners and other bits and parts to help people in their DIY stems and things.... So if anyone needs any of the little pieces, just shoot me a message!

Yeah very pretty wood indeed Buzz.. difficult to say though whether any particular stock is going to be hard or soft. It's technically a softwood but is very, very strong for it's weight and is also somewhat brittle sometimes which is kind of at odds with it's strength and it's softwoodiness. Sometimes we find old timber (from a barn coming down or something like that) that's old growth (or old second-growth) and it's a great example of how hard some of these 'softwoods' used to be while much of the newer, young stock is much softer and of poorer quality.

For our purposes though it's all pretty and fun to work with and I'll happily take as much as Rick will send my way. I see special batches of UnderZaps (or AromaDogs :lmao:) in Blue Pine and Western Red Cedar (and maybe some of that Cherry Zapman mentioned) on the schedule for 2013 now.. :brow:

As always Rick it's a pleasure, you're a standup guy and I'm happy to call you a friend!

Hey UD, if I ordered a Walnut Curves (13448) could you give me a guesstimate on how long it would be to build and ship to Ky. ?

I don't think that model is available, these are the ones currently available.

From my experience shipping will take about 2-3 days to get to you. (Priority mail)

(Assuming all parts/wood are available) I believe Dave also makes units to order. They just take longer since they aren't already available through the site. Same as if it was a custom order.

If I had to guess, I'd say a few weeks from order placed to your doorstep, but that's just a guess .

Had a bit of a scare with my Dog this morning. We had a thunderstorm last night, so I hooked up the VVPS to a surge protector before going to bed. Woke up this morning and when I tried puffing my Pup, no fog! I turned up the heat all the way to 13.5V and only the tiniest wisp came out. This continued for a while and I was starting to think my Pup might need to see the vet.

Then I remembered that I had plugged it in to a surge protector. Before leaving for the pharmacy to pick up some meds, I plugged the VVPS back into the regular outlet. I returned 20 minutes later and tried her out again. Wouldn't you know it...HUGE clouds came out as I choked my lungs out and shed a little tear that my PUP was ok!

Any thoughts on why this might have happened?

@ Buzzhead - that herb guys' guess of a few weeks is pretty accurate.. I could probably speed things along a bit and get it done/tested/shipped out in 2 weeks if we really went after it. I'm also working on a bunch of other Dogs in the shop right now for the upcoming refresh scheduled for this weekend (or early next week) but I can bump those out of the way if need be.

@ Crohnie - I couldn't say why but your surge protector must be limiting voltage or current just enough to affect the output temp of the Dog.. weird. At least you figured it out and at least your Pup sounds healthy and happy.

Alright Dogs, off to open the shop today.. moving kind of slow, I think I finally came down with whatever it is that people are here have been sick with the past few months. I guess it must be a cold or the flu or something and I thought I had avoided it altogether but my body informed me this morning that that was NOT the case. Sigh. Cough. Sigh. Anyways bear with me as I stumble around making Pups at half speed. :freak:

Well, I was finally able to test my UD last night after looking at it for a month and a half (we don't all live in California, right ? :p)

What more could I add to all the deserved praises those puppies already received ?

It works as advertised, of course, so no surprises here. Mine runs with a regulated 12V power supply so it runs at ... yes 12V you guessed it and that's plenty enough. If the violence of the first coughing fit is what you measure the quality of a vape with, then this thing is a beast (I always tell my wife when I cough vaping that I've been "surprised", well boy was I surprised ).

More importantly is the fact that it's a real pleasure to use, as it pleases all my senses. It's a beautiful piece (the Jatoba one pictured page 211 of this thread), very nice to hold, with a faint but nice buttery wooden smell.

Its simplicity makes me feel like my previous 10 years of vaping have been some kind of lab experiments with all kind of cumbersome (and breakable) contraptions. I know some of you like to mate your dog with some crazy glass pieces and variable power supplies, but I finally found the comfort and ease of mind I was seeking in a piece of wood stripped out of all the superfluous.

Now looking forward for some more vaping pleasures in another month and a half (who knows ?) ... ;)

That is a REALLY beautiful piece! Have admired it since I saw it. Are those black bands just shadows or is the wood painted/charred/something else?

Don't know the details of your situation, but waiting around for every month or two sounds brutal! California sure would be nice, though!

Well, I haven't always been in this kind of situation. While I'm not a paranoid kind of guy, I'd still rather stay vague on the subject. Let's just say it's a mix of bad calculations on my part, some rather limited social connections and me not actively seeking for opportunities (in order to keep a healthy marriage).

As far as moving to the States, weed is definitely not a decisive factor in where I choose to live. Besides, not everything is sunny in California. From across the Atlantic, it sure seems like a strange place :tinfoil:. Not talking about some of the wonderful people living there, as in the rest of the world, of course ...

I hear you! My middle name is paranoid.

Well, hopefully your aromatherapy cup is being put to some good use in the meanwhile. I have been thoroughly enjoying the lemongrass and patchouli that Dave sent me.

Does anyone else think it would be cool if the UD had a power adapter that could control temperature and was less bulky? The new, mini version of a competitor's log vape uses a regular sized 7 foot power cord that has a rotary dial to control temperature. It's not bulky or heavy, and the temperature dial is incorporated into the adapter cord.

I won't mention the competition's name since I'm in love with my Pup and loyal to Dave. But if something like that could work with a UD, it would travel better and any possible need for a VVPS would be eliminated. What do you think Dogs?
