The Tempest by Mad Heaters & Phatpiggie

This is the torch recommended to me and that I have been using. It’s a cheaper one but has been working phenomenally for me. Single flame is large enough to get great concentrated clouds

I'm going to start with a Jobson that I purchased from Lotus a while back that is probably the most powerful of the standard torch lighters that I have. If that turns out to not be enough, I have something I bought for doing dabs, but it's a double flame and I'd rather use a single. I think the Jobson will probably do the trick.

I’ve been eyeing the Ronx dual flame for awhile & think now’s the time to snag (it’s beefy enough I think). Getting more flame on the surface area could be good as the balls sit below the bottom mark and well above the top mark. I hit almost the entire side of the Fusion cap with flames, which works better for me than any single.
Ronx dual is perfect. It’s the torch I use. Plenty of power and the dual flame covers a large surface area. Heats super fast

I’m not usually a “RTL” person but I think I achieved that here haha. Was just trying to show the hits with the torch, avb was right on the edge but man it hit well. Direct tube. I went a tiny bit further than I usually do on the VI. Excuse the bad video quality and lengthy wanted to show the time on torch and was a bit longer than I imagined. This is from sitting pretty cold in a car first heat

After using Tempest exclusively native for the first ~month+ I tried tossing it on a WPA. Absolutely rips on my RBB Milk Ball, yet another way to use your Tempest that is well above average. I still want and use my ZX, but I could absolutely see a Tempest and a nail sufficing if you were going for a minimalist kit.
dont' think the tempest could do the job of a nail?

Dam, yea bet you had french roast abv after that . You spin a bit quicker than me which probably makes no difference. I’ve thought about making some kind of mechanical spinner holder or whatever, for a table.. hmm. For grins, I set the big buddy down to a minimum and tried. Kept it pretty far and it covered the cap too much for my liking. Heated up a little fast too. It did work really well though! Good looking result as I stopped at the second VI mark 😉

Yeah I think I just spin it like that out of a habit lol

I want…but! I ordered x100 2mm sic balls…and they are not enough to fill the tempest :lol: i need more

me too since i will have to wait to try a full sic config since i need to order more balls

Maybe it is easy tl get 2,5 balls but i dont want to extend the heating time a lot

With my actual combo i notice one thing: it degrades the flavor way faster
volume of a sphere,, (4/3)*(pi*r^3) ...

2.5mm sphere has an r=1.25 and gives you a vol of = ~8.2
2.0mm sphere has an r=1 and gives you a vol of = ~4.2

90 zirc spheres in the head @ 2.5mm, so you would need approx double to meet the same volume. I was going to order 200 sic @ 2mm - I wanted slightly smaller but draw resistance is not something I want to mess with too much.

I have been enjoying the amazing Tempest over the last week. For me, I have reached for the Tempest 4 out of 5 times, and my new Venty is pissed off at me for paying so little attention to it. I can get super milky clouds out of the Tempest in a way that just is not possible from the Venty; I can tweak exactly how I want my hits from the Tempest. The Venty can’t be fine tuned in the same way.

Mad Heaters and Phatpiggie, wow, your team has created a genius device! Thank you. You deserve success from bringing such an innovative device to the vape world.

I knew I wanted to try out the Tempest when it became clear that its ball vape technology was portable. I can’t afford a conventional sprawling ball vape setup. I do not have the space, as stealth is a factor for me, and that is another reason the Tempest is so cool. It fits in a pocket and goes anywhere. It is like a pocket bong.

I see many other people use the term “honeymoon” to write about the Tempest. For me, this is not a honeymoon. The Tempest does all kinds of things my other vapes do not. For example, I enjoy my Venty, I really do, but man, using that is like being hit by a bulldozer of stonededness (made up word, I know, but you get the point). Using the Tempest can be like that, but the Tempest hits more like a ninja than a tank. If I want a super tasty cloud, almost as thin as a wisp, I can do it with the Tempest. If I want to get launched into space because of a mega hit, I can do that, too. The Tempest is like a Swiss Army knife of vapes.

By my count, the Venty has essentially 3-5 different airpath modes if you are being generous. On the other hand, the Tempest has at least 16 ways to direct air and cool it (or not):

3 different analog heat settings in the Visual Indicator (VI)
AND
6 different air paths: you get one set of 3 distinct air paths (on the stem) with the helix tube; you get another set of 3 distinct air paths with the direct tube
AND
5 main settings in the airflow control in the tip (closed, ¼ open, ½ open, ¾ open, full)
AND
2 options for a secondary cooling unit in the mouthpiece

With the Tempest, I can “go on vapor exploration,” and what I mean by that is I get to discover cool tricks and techniques. That is just pure fun and discovery. One example is just breathing.

I consciously modulate how I breathe in, and I can teach myself new ways to enjoy the taste/other effects. If I am soft and delicate, I won’t cough. If I want to go kamikaze and cough up a lung, well, I can do that, too. (For any musicians out there who use a circular breathing technique , you can use a slightly modified version to keep a Tempest inhale going for a long, long, long time.)

Aside from breathing, I can also play around with different temperatures on my Wand IH. I could use a torch, too, but I prefer the IH because it eliminates wind effing with my torch effectiveness. Torch adds variables I do not like, such as wind, if the torch needs butane, how far I hold it from the flame, did I spin it equally, etc.

The possibilities with the Tempest are mind blowing. Consider that Mad will be offering 3 different sleeves to go on the main unit, so that adds even more variety.

I have a lot of respect for the Venty, and I do like it, but I do not have the same intense love for it as I do for the Tempest. I see the Tempest as true innovation. For me, using it is ritualistic, especially with the Reload. Yes, the Venty is awesome in its own right, but imo it is just a mega Mighty+ on steroids, except it is not as nimble or versatile as the Tempest. If I could go back in time and get my money back for the Venty, I would. For the price S&B is asking for the Venty, I could get 2 Tempests with some awesome accessories.

If I try to imagine myself being happy with most of my other vapes after the Tempest, it would be like expecting myself to be satisfied with dry humping after I had experienced the real deal.

So yeah, words can only do the Tempest so much justice. You really ought to get your hands on one and explore all the cool things you can do with it.

What was the reasoning for the redesign of the condenser, mouthpiece and airflow tube between the Revolve 2 and the Tempest? While I was tearing them both down to clean, I noticed that the changes between them means parts aren't 100% compatible between the two.

Hey Beansuppa, I am curious if you mind sharing photos comparing the Revolve2 with the Tempest stem? Or anyone else who may have both to compare. Would love to see the differences.

The problem with smaller one would be the heat retention more than the draw resistance. If the sic balls are too small maybe they work more like the 3mm zirc.
I think im going to order 100 2mm balls again to try it

The honeymoon phase stuff is just people giving a counter balance to their glowing praise. Early on with vapes we notice the good and ignore the bad.

However I'm approaching 100 days of constant use and I stand by all my early praise. All things considered it's probably my favourite vape of all time.

So people who have the Tempest - how often do you clean your balls?

I have cleaned my Tempest probably 7 times in the last 30 days, I usually soak the stem and bowl in an ISO bath while I have dinner, but I never soak the cap, I just wipe the threading and the screen with a q-tip soaked with some ISO. I haven't iso soaked since the balls since I tipped a bowl of loose packed herbs on the ball screen (with a dab of rosin) - which was early on - so technically I have soaked my balls twice.

However I'm approaching 100 days of constant use and I stand by all my early praise. All things considered it's probably my favourite vape of all time.
I'm at 30 or 31 days; I love that you feel that strongly still at 100 days...

I think I have been critical from the jump even without realizing it, I actually re-read a couple of posts and went "did I write that". I do think there was a bit of a "honeymoon" as... I think I tend to look at the world through... whatever the opposite of rose coloured glasses is... the Tempest addresses a number of things that bother me about my other devices, so I was excited about that... but I think in our conversations we have tried to be as impartial as possible.

Well it happened....

I dropped the Tempest cap (while it was detached) and the ball screen came out and... well you know what happens when the ball screen comes out... I played 88 pickup... managed to find the ball screen, flatten it out (it was heavily concaved) and screwed it back into place using the Reload Gen 2 debowling tool as a screwdriver the to screw then screen back into place @Feyd2blak thank you for mentioning it previously otherwise I would have been starting at that damn thing for ages wondering what I was going to do to put it back in place.

Interestingly... I got REALLY lucky... the balls... that I haven't cleaned in 30 days... are covered in reclaim from all the times I have put rosin in and apparently its been leaking into the balls... so all the balls were covered in oil which meant they all got stuck and didn't bounce!!!

I realized I need to clean my balls more often however... they are really really dirty...

Although my screen is secure, I am kinda nervous. Going to check the security of my screen tonight. Wonder if it’s worth iterating a thicker screen

I also dropped my cap the other day and was the reason my screen and balls fell out. Thankfully was able to recover them all and like @VapingYogi said, used the reload 2 tool to screw the screen back in after I gave my balls a wash.

Seems to hit even harder since then!

I can report I've cleaned my balls once so far. I just noticed they were rattling less, so must have had a little reclaim.

Cleaning was easy. Just soaked cap in iso for 30 mins, rinsed with hot water. Woke up next day, did a heat cycle to boil off the water in the cap. Done.

So I actually logged on at 2am to talk about this lol

I just finished putting the Tempest all back together after the clean and.... I wont forget to wash my balls again, even though I scored with them all coming out together, it actually really significantly affects the performance of the Tempest.

I filled the clean Tempest, put it into my Wand without changing any settings and it heated up to the very top of the VI (which I have never seen it go above the second line), I took gentle puffs on it even though it was technically hotter than its ever been... and it worked probably better than it ever has... was a little confusing... I think both resetting all the balls and screen (as the screen was concave and very tight) and probably the excess oil was drastically impacting performance.

Dirty balls equals a lower maximum temperature, significantly increased heat up time, the oven is slower to cool... but you have a safety system if you drop the tempest and your balls fly out...

Although my screen is secure, I am kinda nervous. Going to check the security of my screen tonight. Wonder if it’s worth iterating a thicker screen
To make it a little less scary, I was seated, I dropped it onto the wooden floor, it bounced onto a rug and got stuck with the ball screen half out and the balls in this crazy train of little balls stuck together with oils/resin... its WAY better now... so I would check it and make sure its secure without being heaps tight.

after noticing how much of a difference it makes, I will be cleaning my balls weekly at least... its a significant difference in performance.

.... in future I will do it overnight but I sat there and watched it in my little jar of ISO like a cat obsessed with its prey until it was able to be washed and used... as stupid as it sounds I was scared I bricked it :p :)

I think it honestly should be in the Manual how cleaning affects the performance as I didn't really think about it but now I see the difference, its significant.

I think I am prone to being a bit contrary at times.. It seems odd to be so thoroughly impressed, I have not really used my other vapes since I got the tempest and I have actually stopped combustion, I could never quite shake the ould spliff or blunt but this thing, with the ritual and especially the taste (when did I start chasing flavours!!) It has impacted me massively. I started using the tempest when a friend was visiting and we had a few drinks, always been a massive trigger for me to roll up a spliff and somehow with the tempest and the mouth feel that did not happen!

I am starting to moderate my use as I enjoy it so much, Setting chores in for the day to use it at the end. I have gone through a lot more bud and my abv is pretty sweet and getting lighter as I am just enjoying the flavour and no I get all I want from a bowl and reload a second if I want more.

This is my actual fear! I do not wanna play that game. Honestly after what you are saying here, I am gonna hold off on cleaning until absolutely needed so they remain sticky!

I wonder if a dosing cap style screen for the balls could be sold in the future? It would allow quick changes to different balls for those of us that are inclined and it would relieve the fear of drops etc?

I had been thinking about dosing caps and had the same idea, a chamber that clicks into place that you can just open and refill... the same I was thinking about in the bowl as well (a chamber to fill with a mess lid to stop herbs falling onto the ball screen) - I was just curious about the added mass decreasing ball space and changing the heat matrix in a negative way

I had to smile because I originally didn't clean them when I put it all back together, but after cleaning them, honestly, so so worth it, I am too scared to take apart the Tempest to make my VI move without sticking so my initial response was "not cleaning those, they are staying that way" but finally I talked myself into it and - its worth the risk - Clean balls > dirty balls... the smell alone :) there ends up being a slight burnt smell over time that I didn't notice until it was cleaned...

That’s a good idea if it could somehow be implemented!! Some quick swap on different balls, or even have one clean and ready to go to switch out when they get dirty. Love it!

My fiancé recently said while we were hitting it: “it’s like we are sharing joints again!”

Completely the experience I’ve been getting when using the native stem. And after a whole day of direct tube, I might actually prefer it?? I thought I enjoyed the cool vape more but these warm hits add even more to that joint feel experience. And the clouds seem much bigger.
