Exactly, you should be inserting the cell positive down, this has been discussed a lot and it's even included in the user manual now. That is for the reason you hinted and to prevent accidental shorts when the cell wrapping is damaged (cf FW4 recall recently)

I was interested since I like a lot of the vaporizers I've read you talk about. What did you think of the Milaana?

The milaana really surprised me with the draw restriction..... THERE IS NONE!! Like seriously I've hit a lot of vapes and the Milaana just has a surprisingly wide open airflow.

I enjoyed the button for pulsing the battery, and I could feel the vapor production form and drift over my tongue as I pulsed the heat.

But at the end of the day, I found myself cloud chasing that vapor and the flavor, and emptying/refilling the vaporizer way before it's "fully extracted" (by my definition - that would be ABV color is 100% consistent throughout the load) - purely psychological, but that's how I used the vape. Additionally, I hated the lack of temperature regulation.... I'm a lazy fucker and I have discovered that I personally like to find my favorite temperature, set my vape to it, and forget about temps while I enjoy the vapor.

Did I like the Milaana? Absolutely! If I had an endless supply of high quality herb to rip and refill as often as I pleased, I would totally have one in my daily lineup by now.

Alas, I am a lazy fuck and I am more of a Crafty/Mighty guy myself where I can set the temp and forget about it. I've actually recently killed the battery on my Crafty and I find myself lusting for the Mighty. I keep telling myself to find something else to play with (and I have tried to reconsider the Milaana recently), but I keep going back to the Milaana.

I dunno, decisions decisions lol.

Emailed him. Thanks. I am now more interested in a short wood stem since I was reading about it, and saw him mention that it conducts less heat so more heat goes to the herb. This sounds interesting to me. Maaaybe it will allow for faster heat up and better extraction? I have no issues with extraction this far but I'll always go with something better. It makes sense though as glass retains heat more so than wood. Can't wait to see what types of woods he has. I've also put away my vapes and am using the Mi exclusively so I can master it and learn all the ins and outs of it. I am totally happy with my purchase @rosedale, thanks for everything.

This is absolutely correct. I have a maple stem from alan and love it. It definitely steals much less heat from the air stream, meaning less button time required and the feedback is unreal you really know where you are on the heat wave! It is my go to stem over glass now, though did take a little while to break in for the wood taste to die down now it just adds a slightly nutty profile which I can hardly pick out (actually I really like it). Add this to not having to worry about it breaking if I drop the stem and it really is awesome. The only detractor I have found is it can expand and lock into the female on the Mi after consecutive hits, but this is just a factor of being wood and will come loose when it cools. Or I have found simply removing and replacing the stem every couple of hits combats this.
I got one the same length of the Mi its self which looks great when inplace it just looks ballanced. I would advise anyone to get the same (I think 3 inch it was) as due to the extra heat coming through you need that distance, a shorter stem would be quite a bit hotter on the mouth but this is very subjective so YMMV!
I went for a standard maple stem so it matches tge Mi and can not look at it without admiring alans skills it is flawless.

I just use a battery case, like the ones you get from the vape stores to carry an 18650 and the short stem side by side. Then carry a fresh one in the vape. You could put a rubber stopper in the glass female hole on the Milaana to keep debris out and protect the glass too. I just use a film canister with course ground herb and , like most users, suck it into the stem.

Maybe a Splinter, with the adjustable wattage/heat evic mod would suit your needs better!

It's my understanding the battery's will vent out the top of the battery. so I've been sticking it positive down.

I'm not sure I understand. Even if the battery vents out the part your putting into the hole, it's still sticking in a hole towards your face. This doesnt make it any safer. The hole is still pointed towards your face. Is there any plan to create one where the battery hole is not pointed directly at the face? Fire doesnt care which way its pointing as long as there is a hole and oxygen to get out. Also, doesnt that effectively make the battery a small missle since its going to be propelled out? Even though its being stopped by a piece of wood, that wont be doing much in way of stopping any blast.

To be honest I'm not near this worried. I don't push these battery's that hard. I don't need to. And if I was this worried about these battery's I guess I'd stick with butane vaporizers. Because all the battery powered vaporizers could vent at some point. And a plastic vaporizer that a battery would "explode" would definitely send melted plastic shrapnel. But again I don't worry that much about those either. Not every vape is for everyone.

I noticed I was doing the same, the AVB comes out even and very light brown. I threw it in the hopper and didn't get much out of it. It was a small amount and I set it deep in the stem far from the heater. I like it like this since it doesn't char it and the taste is always good. I don't bother to extract until it's dark brown. It tastes so good that now I'm going to start looking for strains that smell good. The Tangerine Kush I had was delicious, and so is the Jack Herer. The Super Glue doesn't have that delicious taste but the potency is there, since it's an Indica.
@TheRobbo Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm most likely getting a Walnut one to match with my Walnut Mi, and a black and white ebony. @Alan has so many options it woods it was and is really hard to narrow it down to two choices.

If you don't abuse your batteries this is not a concern, follow the safety instructions for batteries to use and you should be fine as I believe there are zero instances of any of the type it battery issues you describe with any Milaana. I know RBT abuses his batteries even with torn wraps, discharging them way down, and he has never seen one burst in or through a Mi... If these are your concerns then I would think a lot of 18650-powered vapes would not be for you unfortunately. There is also no plan to redesign the Milaana, or make any further changes, as it is a very complete product now after going through several versions (I have one of the first ever made and one of the latest produced as well) and plenty of testing...

Yes that pure taste! Trying new strains is so fun, and experiencing the full flavor profile is a real treat. Fresh moist herbs can be particularly mouthwatering for those first few hits, while less than stellar tasting buds can be more noticeable which is a double edged sword I suppose. Makes me want to stick to fruity strains and other classics whose unique flavors I have grown to love... I also had a tough time deciding on wood from all his choices! Went dark and light too, dark walnut and canarywood (photos a few pages back), try getting one with a WonG tip too! Not that I've tried mine through water yet, or use either much at all yet honestly lol I do still prefer the glass, the standard RBT stem/screens still work best for me, despite having many options now. Need to post full pic probably

So is everybody inserting battery with button(positive) down??? I could have swore that Ryan said positive up! Anyway if thats safer ill do it too! Though I don't get too worried. I don't tax my batteries very much either and have a few to rotate.

Also was wondering if @AlanS stems, really, cool the vapor down, Significantly, more than the native stems. Im still perfecting my draw method and find the short stem a bit hot at times. My throat does seem to be a bit more sensitive than some others too. I, also, rigged up a short 12" whip that I utilize with the short mouthpiece that works good but too bulky for out and about.

Post them!!! I need to do the same I just haven't had the time. The Milaana is unreal with taste, I like that it doesn't taste charred. More experimenting today with the Mi.

@SpudBob: I think it's the opposite: wood conducts less heat away from the vapor stream, so the stem itself stays cooler than a glass one but it cools the vapor less.

On the other hand I imagine a massive stainless steel stem would sink a lot of heat out of the vapor, but would quickly end up too hot for the lips.

But that's just from my limited understanding of thermodynamics, I might be wrong.

Quick reminder on positive down in the Mi.......since polarity doesn’t matter. The issue was raised by an FW4 that had a battery incident due to a torn wrap on the positive side. @KeroZen explained it in detail. There is a section of the battery case where the negative (which is basically all of the outer case except for the positive terminal) and the positive are very close, and under certain circumstances can be shorted out when the negative is exposed to a torn wrap in that vicinity. For instance the copper contact at the top. If the wrap gets torn at the other end, not near the concern, because no danger of shorting on that end.

Yup, but if you let off the button sooner I think it evens it out. The vapor will be cooler if you let off the button sooner and that's where I figured it could make the Mi more efficient battery wise.

No, positive down. The nipple on the battery hatch and a torn 18650 shell could create a short if just in the right location when positive is facing the copper pick is the reasoning IIRC.

This ↘️ Spalted Maple with Emerald Glass is currently up on Ebay.

Both of those are beautiful. I wish I had more money to throw around. :ugh:

EDIT: POST 666, maybe that's a sign to not fight temptation? Lol

@DDave mouthpieces will help. The large open mouthpieces of the stock stems is where the harshness comes from. A tapered mouthpiece is way easier to handle, even if it's a shorter vapor path.

IME experience, and I have exactly the same problem, DDave mouthpiece didn't help at all. The best way to avoid this after a lot of different experiments is using some kind of water filtration (DDave has one of those, maybe thats the one that @AJS talks about?) or a hemp fiber filter like the one you can see here:

XBvu3SP.jpg

(there is another photo and a better explanation in this post http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/t...ated-single-18650.18829/page-336#post-1126278 )

Using it I can vape native without any filtration and the Milaana becomes an amazing beast!!

And on top of that you can re-vape the filter (I don't enjoy it but you will have some really nice sedative hits) and enjoy that golden reclaim <3

Calm Consistency
@b0 interesting points! Yeah hemp fiber works too.
The main things for me affecting harshness:
1. Open mouthpieces (hits back throat)
2. Open airflow (fast draw)
3. Straight tube (no bends or curves)

Tapered mouthpiece fixes 1 and 2. Hemp fixes 3.
1 and 2 are the biggest factors for me and almost indirectly solve problem 3.
Hemp also helps problem 2 too.

I think most everyone varies between 1 2 and 3 and solving whichever one affects you most will yield satisfying results.

Totally agree with all your points! And there is a 4th "improvement": A bit of draw restriction helps to find the right hitting technique

Only in first bowl with medium ambet stem, but so far very very very good results with a freshly charged battery! Definitely needs some breaking in, but that is the fun part after all, no? :brow:
