So it turns out I had a defective center rod sleeve and spring contact. But @SamuraiSam got be squared away with a new sleeve and spring contact. As a result, my rod placement will stay put when assembling the Herc. I have a DMM, and checked the resistance and got a 2.3-2.4 ohms, which I believe is the correct resistance.

However, I'm still having difficulties achieving the performance I'm after and hoping some here can help point me in the right direction. Here are some of the stats of what I'm doing:

-Hercules SR-74x (2.3-2.4 ohm when assembled)
-Persei head w/ R1xxx on the back, assuming this an older V2 top?
-.6g of high quality live resin shatter loaded (including material used to prime the coil)
-Brand new, fully charged (w/Nitecore D2) AW 18350's in 7.4V mode with SR-74x white rod
-AAF is roughly half closed over intake holes
-Using 1 Ti coil that was slightly squished between 2 quarters

Hitting technique:
-Hold power for 10-15 seconds while slowly inhaling
-Move to pulsing the power for 3 seconds on/3 seconds off for another ~15 seconds
-Cooldown hits for 30 seconds to 1 minute (really trying to make sure I don't get any leakage)

Even with this procedure, I'm still getting hits that are comparable to what I get from my KISS mini. However the hits are much more flavorful. The Herc is definitely getting hot, I can feel the heat even through the heat shield.

Am I simply not holding down the power long enough? I got the impression that the 7.4 SR-74 was fairly powerful. I guess I was imagining it would be quicker? If not, that's fine and I'll adjust my technique accordingly. Just trying to make sure I'm not doing something wrong.

I've also tried two different pairs of AW 18350's, but both behave the same. Don't think the batteries are the issue, they read 4.17 V resting when tested with my DMM.

Could my placement of the AAF be an issue? I have it roughly half closed. Didn't seem to be much different then when it was completely open. Should I try closing it nearly completely?

Sorry again for the long post, just excited to get it performing full throttle!

Especially since my Phish show is this Tuesday, would love to blow some clouds there!

Here's a pic in the top, showing how much I have loaded. There's definitely a decent amount above the coil, the flash makes it look like a little less is in there then there really is.

Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!

Id be willing to bet it's over loaded I didn't start getting great hits until I learned to load less at a time after priming I'd load .1-.2 and no more or I'd get inconsistent results

Edit: also it looks like your coil may have moved up a bit see if you can push it down the top of the rod should be a little above the coil

Nailed it, good eye! It had definitely risen a little bit. I pushed it back down with a toothpick, and noticed a marked improvement in hit size. Much better. Still nothing massive, but I wasn't really pushing it either.

I guess next time I do a full clean, I'll squish the coil a bit more. There was slight resistance when I put it in, so thought it would have held in place.

How long are people typically holding the power to get fairly large hits? And what's the preferred placement with the AAF?

I have my SR74x running on the core set to 7.4V.
I also do not overfill. I like to be able to see a sheen on top of the coil.
I generally give the button a 5 second press to get it warmed up. I hold the Persei vertically as much as possible. I have noticed a more consistent hit if I do this. If you think about it it makes sense.
Then I will press for a further 5 seconds drawing gently. Then I will pulse if I want more hits.
Directly after my last hit I start cooling. I will probably draw on it 5 or six times to cool it, then I lay it down horizontally.
With my BHO oil I can get consistently big hits and good clouds with great taste.

@Roth If your coil has floated up, it needs more squishing to keep it in place. That's likely the main reason you aren't getting good vapor production. You need enough of an interference fit so the coil stays firmly on the bottom. If it floats up at all, weak vapor every time.

Draw gently- sip. And yes, more than 3 second pulses once its up to temp. Try 5, then 7, and longer (if you have the lungs for it). Also, once the rod is up to temp, increase draw strength while holding the button for thicker vapor.

At 3 seconds on the button I'm sipping but at 10 seconds I'm ripping. Since the rod has gotten hotter, compensate with more draw strength. That's the balancing act.

How long does everyone like to warm their sr-71 before drawing, and when do you start increasing your draw? I'm getting by with mine using 2 Ti coils, a 3-5sec warmup and a 5-7sec hit, followed by a second off, 3sec on, then cooldown -- just curious how other people use theirs.

@Roth I had to squish my coil to an oval that wouldn't comfortably fit into the Herc, and then unceremoniously cram that MF in there -- when only slightly ovular, it felt like there was a lot of resistance going in, but the coil would slide up (almost imperceptibly) when I pulled with any force while hitting.

@THC SCIENTIFIC @SamuraiSam you need a searchable knowledge base on w9tech, or TSBs for the manuals, so users can troubleshoot before they have to call in or get in touch via FC! I understand that takes work, I just imagine it would take some of the load off you guys (at least for low level troubleshooting, like so many of us have needed but are capable of performing if only we knew what to do)

Many thanks for the tips everyone, think I'm turning the corner on mastering the Herc.

I'll definitely squish my coil more, next time I do a full clean. That seems to have taken care of my vapor production issues, once it was pushed back down. I'm getting much fuller hits now, and still haven't really pushed it to the limits yet.

I think one of my problems was drawing too hard on cool down hits. I'm probably overdoing my cool down hits, but I'd rather do that then have some leak. I'll slowly learn the lower limits of necessary cool down hits.

I've also opened up my AAF completely to help lessen drag on the coil when I inhale.

And agreed completely about needing a knowledge base or wikipedia page or something, @ragnorokk. I've spent well over 10 hours reading this thread, searching for answers in an effort to gain a full understanding of everything Up Tech. It's really not so bad once you have an initial grasp on it, but it can be tough to get at first. So many models (some past, some present, some future dreams), so many names, so many acronyms. Instructions are hard to come by, but there, and they're often slightly out of date or missing some key points.

Ex: In the current instructions for the SR-74x, it links you to the instructions for the SR-74. As a result, it tells you the rod placement necessary for the SR-74, which is incorrect for the SR-74x.

There needs to be a way to compare different products, in a stat sheet sort of manner. Explain the differences in models when they are upgraded (ex SR-71 vs SR-74 vs SR-74x). Explain which version Persei is currently available for sale on the site. Size dimensions of all products should be given. Quick and easy explanation of 3.7V vs 7.4V, and other common basic questions.

There needs to be something dedicated to all the tips and tricks that people use to get the most out of their products. Such as for the Herc: slow draws, proper coil placement, length of button press, etc.

The information needed is out there, but it can be extremely time consuming finding it buried in this thread.

Please don't let this sound like I'm hating on Up Tech in any way, just giving honest feedback. I've been very pleased with my purchase, and the customer service has been outstanding. When I had a problem, they took care of it immediately.

I can tell that my SR-74x is a quality product, that will last me for as long as I own it. The flavor that I've gotten from my 15th hit is just as good as the 1st. Can't wait to really log some hours with it :)

None of the troubleshooting or alternate assembly instructions that solved my issues are posted on the site. For instance, it doesn't say to squish my coil into an oval for better resistance, or mention how to use (button press length, draw rate, etc). I'm not saying it has been impossible to utilize the Herc, but it could be made more accessible by adding the tips/tricks that Sam helps people with all the time. Getting the perfect adjustment for the Hercules on the 8, for instance, would be a good instructional, even written. I know Sam wants to do videos at some point, I'm just encouraging (and written seems easier than setting aside time for video).

Edit: hit post and I see @THC SCIENTIFIC already posted there will be more help on the site next year. Awesome, glad to hear that Gary! In the meantime, I'll keep trying to teach my friends how to use the Herc in person ;)

Guys nobody is hating on anyone or anything, we take critisism and make ourselves better.

I've definitely seen that to be true over the course of me reading the thread. One of the things that really drew me to Up Tech.

Just curious, my Persei has R1xxx on the back, is that an early V2 head?

not 100% certain as i dont own a 1st gen persei but my 2nd gen is V2-xxxx my 3rd gen is v3-xxx and my hammer is hxxx

lonelyhero,
Is the nibbler g compatible with the kiss gen 3?
For the dual coil: If you hold the main body against the bottom of the nibbler G, or rig up an adapter for the mp to fit in the nibbler G, sure. MP is real thin in comparison to nibbler G, and the main body of the cart is a few mm bigger than a globe base: there's only about a millimeter's difference in size between the two, but the cartridge body can't fit inside the opening.

The dual coil AC type heater is too big for a globe, the skillet is too large.

No idea if the single coil cartridges are the same size, but I would anticipate them to be.

Edit:
@masaki I had not thought to compare them, but its the same size as the base of the previous generations' KISS cart. The old gen had seemed smaller to me, but I guess it's just an optical illusion from the conical top.

the v1 iris has been out of production for a long time now the v2 is still in development @THC SCIENTIFIC recently reassured me that it is still coming we just have to wait and see what happens i guess

If you want to adapt an old Nibbler to the KISS Gen 3 the Nibbler X is the one to try. Don't rush out and buy one just to use with the Gen 3 KISS, but you have one on hand and want to play...

Take the metal base out and the plastic MP sticks inside where the EO cart would go. Now all you need to do is figure out how to jerry rig a seal. The first thought that comes to mind if is you had a thick, soft, fat O ring that would just slip down around the mouthpiece stem. It would make a seal if you applied downwards pressure.

*Edit try it with and without the metal base. Hmmm

I mentioned a wiki would be awesome awhile ago and @SamuraiSam pointed out there was one for the persei. He said it's out of date though because doing the wiki is kind of time consuming. I remembering saying I'd try to edit some stuff, but I suck and totally never did. People could make one for the herc.

Perhaps, but all the pics of the v1's I've seen do not have Persei on them (it's on the tube instead). My head has Persei under the button.

Are there any v1's that have Persei on the head?

Still trying to understand all the options...

What is the difference between a Kiss and a Hercules?

the kiss carts are load as you go or LayG you load a fwe hits and reload as needed theyre also wire coil heaters so theyre semi disposable but can be rebuilt if your handy

the herc is pretty much indestructible/complete user serviceable, uses a ceramic heating rod as the heat source and a titanium sponge to hold larger amounts of oil so you can load once and be good for a whole day or longer

you can kinda think of it like the kiss cart is your first car from when you were 16 it gets you were you need to be but its nothing amazing the herc is more like a high end sports car it will get you where your going much much faster but requires more technique to use it properly and not crash and burn lol

When have people found it to be the best time to reload the Herc? How can you tell when you're starting to vape the "buffer"?

Should I reload when:

A) No visible oil in chamber, coil looks dry
B) No visible oil sitting on top of coil, but coil has a "wet" look to it
C) Hits begin to decrease, not paying much attention to look of the coil

And when reloading, I believe it's best to have a slight pool on top of the coil? Nothing too thick, but covering it. Is that correct?
