Discontinued The Okin by D.M. Pipes

smokum

I am who I am and your approval isn't needed!
I've been IN since day one of this device's mention after seeing the craftsmanship shown with the handcrafted smoking pipes Dan has done, (also helps that it's a fellow Cannuck, lol).... and I can hardly wait until release to enjoy this upcoming classy masterpiece

ps: Thank-You for not doing a pre-order... <--- I can't stand pre-order and crowdfunding campaigns personally.

I might get the tar and feathers for saying that (bring it on :goon:) but I have to admit I'm not too keen on the box look.

I find these 2 colours not to go too well together; @Dan Morrison would you consider making a black box (maybe african blackwood then) and a black sleeve with a brass like colour logo so the box would match the Okin head?

:hmm: Maybe the current sleeve colour would go well with a black box now that I think of it.

Oh and does black cork exist? :D
Now you've done it! Tar and feathers it is! ;)

I believe the production model box is going to be a different color (unless this box gets its color from some sort of wood stain). See quote below:

This box is made from padauk wood, but the production model box will be made from African Mahogany (which I think is an even nicer looking wood).

African mahogany looks kinda brown/redish too.

It'd look nice with a light grey/silver sleeve, but then I'd want the Okin to match these colors too! :D

I hope you already came up with a fast production process in order to satisfy the growing demand you create with your updates.

EDIT: one further question came to mind. manufactarung the box surely takes a decent amount of time and is playing a role in establishing the price range. are you going to offer a budget version with a box only made out of craft paper and corc with an option for a later upgrade?

Amazingly, with a crosscut sled and box joint jig mounted to my tablesaw the boxes don't take that long to make. It would actually take longer to make them out of kraft paper, ha. This is just about the cheapest option I could come up with! As a bonus, it looks nice.

I'll be using the African mahogany, as you know now, but it won't be as red as the picture you posted. With the linseed oil finish it will be a sort of darkish brown, a hint of yellow, a hint of red.

To make the boxes out of African blackwood would cost about $40 in material cost alone. That shit is EXPENSIVE. haha. I thought about walnut, but again, it's fairly expensive... and tough to work with, the dust is quite irritating.

I definitely see where you're coming from, I am all about harmony! But mahogany has a lot of physical properties that make it ideal for a box like this.. It's stable, easy to work with, glues well, and it's medium priced.

That said, I'll probably change up the box wood now and then, keep things interesting.

ha! black cork does not exist, sorry!

Wow. Although this is my first post on this site, I've been following this thread and the development of the Okin for a while now. And after seeing everything you've posted, I must admit I usually set my expectations very high when I see an update from you. However, to my amazement, you always manage to exceed my expectations and put a level of thought and detail into the design of the Okin that simply blows me away.

Well Done. I look forward to the day when I can put it to use, and truly appreciate the work you've put into this.

Thank you! That's so kind of you to say. :)

Some of them do put a sour taste in my mouth... Others are not so bad!

Ha, guess I shoulda looked into that before I posted. Though it sounds now like it's not going to look quite like either pic. Anyhow, I'm sure that, coming from Dan, however it turns out it will be beautiful!

I kinda like that idea! Maybe make them out of a few different varieties and randomize it so the customer doesn't know exactly what their box will look like until they get it? That could be neat... Now I'm just thinking out loud though. I could see not everybody liking that idea as much as me

Hahaha, for some reason that made me think of like... a completely randomized set of materials. Surprise! You get a box made from bubblegum! and a Vaporizer made from cheese.

Blow that shit out!!
@Dan Morrison OMG!!!! AWESOME SAUCE!!!!! This creation is very beautiful, sexy and super classy...and I'm not sharing. Lol. Ya gotta get your own!!
The box is super sexy. I love the finished look. Girls will love, love this because it's not sooo manly, it's versitile...sexless.

The box along with the Okin is a great heirloom piece. I am so very honored to be apart of this entire process and to get a glimpse of what the world will soon find out....the Okin is the ultimate experience. Great work!!! Great personal love!!!

The personal touches and the superb detail you put into producing a quality timepiece is wonderful. Thank You.

I am curious... I really like this vape but am still on the fence.
Am I going to wind up with black smear on everything? Fingers, pockets, cell phones, face, etc?

Not so concerned with it while burning, more addressing loading, reloading, and transporting all the coal.

Hey @FlyingLow :)

You may find this post from Dan on that particular subject reassuring as he is saying that the charcoal he uses doesn't actually get messy like charcoal that we are used to . . .
Interestingly, the bamboo charcoal doesn't act like hardwood charcoal, it doesn't mark your hands at all with black carbon. It's more of a hard charcoal that crumbles into large chucks if you crush it, rather than a powdery soft charcoal like those used for artists charcoals.

Obviously it is still a bit more messy than battery operated devices, because you have to dispose of the final little unburnt "butt" end of the charcoals.

Now come on down from there before you slip & split the difference! :o

@Dan Morrison you've hit it out of the park yet again, yet I'm sure all of the posts preceeding this one shows you that. I just wanted to add one more to the pile! Your attention to detail, it's simplicity, it's beauty, it's just a class act, bottom line. I think it holds just the right amount to coals, and I think you're getting the maximum capacity out of such a small space. And I even love how the herb chamber has a little cover with a little handle! It's adorable, in the best way possible.

This is a vape that will invite me to use it more than I should, but I've already made peace with that. :peace:

Box is nice for sure but wouldn't be more pocketable if you just through the Okin in your pocket and have a small bag of as many charcoal as you need each time?

Or is the box slim enough to fit nocely in the pocket?

It looks plenty slim enough to fit easily in the pocket, I think. Unless you were wearing really tight pants, that is. Judging by the pic Dan posted, it looks about the same size as the cell phone I'm currently typing this on (except about twice as thick, probably). Honestly, if I put it in my pocket without the box, I'd be more worried that I'd accidentally snap it in half or something :o

I wish it will be as slim as possible then… :) A SS case like GH's maybe? How long will it be again?

I see the Okin as a piece of art. It is not something I would take anywhere except to show someone. It certainly wouldn't be my carry-around, so the size of the box is immaterial to me.

Whatever Dan comes up with will be beautiful and make me happy. He is obviously a exceptional artist. It shows in everything he writes here, and his photos are just another facet of his talents. They're simply stunning.

The case is very small. I would put it into my jeans pocket without hesitation. And carry it anywhere, that's what this is designed to do!

Also, I wasn't sure If I should bring this up or not, but it seems that every time I post this outside of this forum, I receive a lot of comments from people who misunderstand the idea of using charcoal.

I think it has a lot to do with the word charcoal itself, it seems like people see the word "coal" and assume a lot of bad things.

I wonder if I should be using a different term to describe the heat source, perhaps, organic carbon? Or something like that....

Oh, I will take mine to every trip to the countryside or while camping or away from civilization! Art can go anywhere! :D
Yeah this would be a good one to take camping. I think it would help to reconnect with nature in a way that an electronic or even a torch powered portable just wouldn't do. The Okin just feels more natural :)

Ah the infamous elevator pitch. It's essential to come up with a quick 1 sentence description with any product or invention. Without, the uninformed may pass it off in disinterest without giving it the consideration it deserves.

What about Bamboo Carbon? or Bamboo Anthracite (Get all technical and people go crosseyed, but might not sound as bad as charcoal)
