I believe coated washi paper like the toads (think high quality paper mache). I think he tweaked the formula and technique a bit for the toads to increase durability, but is otherwise very similar.
I the think it's Chiyogami paper. it's slightly different from washi. chiyogami is already printed on a thick paper. it's a Japanese paper. Dan covered it with a special coating, acrylic I think.
washi is used on the Toads. Dan uses it blank and paints on/inside, saturating the different layers of washi paper...
the coating on the toads is much more resistant!!
