The Nomad From Morwood

Where is the waiting list for this beauty? I have yet to read the thread in full, but I know I want one! Thank you!

Vapeur Rogue,

I'm back from vacation, where I only took two vapes with me: the Nomad for dry herbs, and the CeraWax for concentrates in the evening. It was not really a leap of faith, as I knew how good the Nomad is already, but it shows how much I enjoy it and how thoroughly I trust it to fulfill my medication needs.

There are two negative points though. The first is independent from the vape itself. I'm really underwhelmed by the Sony VTC6 cell. I bought one to see for myself, and of course I should not be making any generalization based on single sample, but clearly nothing justifies the much higher price tag for our application. For sure it looks marginally better on some test graphs, but in practice there's absolutely no difference, no extra oomph nor run time. I'm even suspecting it doesn't run as long as the HG2 or 30Q. Factor into that the fact that it's rated for less cycles than the two others... I clearly don't recommend it and would advise people to stick with the 30Q and/or HG2.

In fact, for my usage pattern, I see little difference when using these 3000mAh cells compared to the 2500mAh ones, excepted they run cooler. It was the same already with the Milaana. I think it's best to stick with the 2500's (Samsung 25R, LG HE2 and HE4 and Sony VTC5 and VTC5A) rather than the 3000's (Samsung 30Q, LG HG2, Sony VTC6) The latter really shine in two cells regulated vapes like the Zion though.

The second point is more annoying. In fact I'm a bit gutted. I was so careful with my sleeve, using it as little as possible. It was always stored and transported inside that small "sock" I got back then when mp3 players were still a thing. And the other day I noticed that the gold pigments on my wave Japanese paper are gone in many places. Underneath there is an almost turquoise looking color underline. It gives the same effect as when paper with ink pen on it has gotten wet, not really smeared but... bah, I lack the vocabulary to describe it, being not a native English speaker.

I don't know if Dan puts any kind of lacquer on it but maybe a spray of some kind of transparent protective coating could prevent that?

@KeroZen , Ah damn! That sucks man. :( Not too sure what happened there, never experienced that in my testing of the papers... and I did a lot of tests.

I do coat the papers with a matte acrylic finish that is mean't to protect them from dirt/moisture, and give some added abrasion resistance. But I tried to keep the application pretty light to avoid covering up that pleasant texture of the paper.

Anyhow, If you'd like to send it in for a re-wrap and a thicker protective finish, I'd be happy to do that for ya. If memory serves me, you'd be OK with covering the texture of the paper, and replacing it with a smooth finish?

If the acrylic finish is applied a bit thicker, and sanded between coats, the result is a silky smooth surface.

But.. with matte acrylic, the thicker the layer... the less 'pop' the gold ink will have, and the more 'plastic' the sleeve will feel. It's a very slight difference, but there. This is another reason I went with a thin layer of acrylic.

@Xelatsok, I will send you a new heater module free of charge with the newer design to avoid that issue you had.

Interesting observations about the steel herb chamber. You would think that it would add conduction... but I guess not! I love when real-world tests give a different result than expected.

Do you chop up your tobacco leaf? If not, try it with a super fine chop with scissors, and then sift through a flour sifter or kitchen strainer to separate the grind and make it more consistent in size. I find that with tobacco, this definitely gives an insane boost in performance.

@delloy, Sweet photos! Thanks for sharing! :)

I love all the feedback, it really serves as a launching point for future changes to the Nomad design. I've got a handful of design tweaks coming for the second batch (which is coming out awesome btw... the burls in this batch.... *drool*) that will address all of the issues discussed in the thread so far.

If by "it" you mean just the sleeve, then thank you a lot, I'll consider your offer. But if you mean the Nomad and its sleeve, then no way! I'm not letting my precious go!!! :mental:

Haha, I love it so much!

Thank you for the heater! I tried to grind tobacco with my SLX and knives but I did not like the taste changes. Grinding leads to many new juice leakages from new cuts of the leafs. Then everything goes through the roof - taste, flavor, nic. I prefer fine cut tobacco blends and my preparation method reduces them further. So I am OK with final product with no grinding.

Oh my...this is the beginning of the end! Tonight while I was at home, I grabbed and loaded the Nomad instead of the Zion... :uhh:

No other vape managed to make me do that. I use the Zion as a desktop vape with a power adapter and all my other portables only when I'm away.

Damn fucking pumped to hear that! Your opinion is certified quality and it seems the Nomad is too.

My Nomad replaced Lotus as daily driver.

Anybody have abv shots? Can you get your botanicals to that dark coffee brown, on the verge of combustion easily?

Definitely yes. With the Low-Heat Heater it will take a fresh battery OR a longer draw/heat up time, but it's def doable easily IMO.

The Low-Heat heater will give you a more consistent coloured ABV, because there is more soak time for the heat to evenly distribute throughout the load.

Combustion is more difficult to achieve, do-able, but once the technique is down, you simply won't combust by accident.

With the High-Heat heater, it's a much quicker road to dark coffee brown abv, but requires more technique to achieve consistent results because of the more intense heat and faster heat-up times.

I will be making the new batch of heater modules soon, and would definitely be interested in hearing everyones preference. I think I am feeling a lean towards most people using the Low-Heat module most often....

@KeroZen and @Xelatsok - Your words give me great motivation! The way I see it, the Nomad design has only just begun taking shape.... I'm so excited to see where this all goes.

The new lower heat direction is something that I'm very excited about-thank you. I love on-demand vapes, but loathe the accidental combusting that comes with some of the manuals. Am even more interested now.

Ah that makes perfect sense.

What if I put my name on the waiting list now but by the time my batch come up I wanted a sleeveless Nomad where the battery and heater module were flush inside the body? Would that be possible?

I just thought of a possibility that seems it would be the simplest and look fantastic. So on the sleeve there is already that piece of wood that once it’s slipped over the body, it looks as if it’s the bottom of the body sticking out of the sleeve..what if you just cut off an extra length of body and hollow out the inside enough that would slide over the protruding heater module and battery cap thing and could be held in place by magnets?

Resulting in a Nomad that looks like one flush piece of wood for the body except for the band of brass around the “top” of the “bottom”...if that makes sense

@wild anchovy , You must have bugged my sketchbooks, because it sounds like you've got inside information, hahah.

While that design is something I've been developing, there are a couple functional problems that I haven't quite figured out yet.

In any case, I can add ya to the waitlist. I'll shoot over a PM.

So I've been using my Nomad more and more over the past few weeks and I've been thinking about what my biggest inconvenience with the unit has been so far, and that has been stirring. Now the unit really doesn't require a stir for good extraction but it's nice to give the bowl a little stir at the end of it's life to get an extra hit or two out of it.

This got me to thinking about my mistvape touch vaporizer and the stir collar accessory I have for it. That thing is a godsend for stirring your bowl, I would love to get some kind of similar stir collar for my nomad to minimize spillage when stirring.

I bet you the scoop n stir from delta3dstudios would work. I’ve had mine for years originally for the enano but it comes in handy very often.

I'm talking more of a stir collar and not a stir tool, which is something that would fit snug onto the stem and make it so herb doesn't fall out the top of the stem when you're stirring. Here's a picture of the MVT collar showing what I'm talking about. You can see it goes on the top of the stem to make stirring less messy. Something just like that but made to fit the dimensions of the Nomad stem would be absolutely amazing.

I made something similar out of Oo-Goo for my Mi, (however you spell it) it's like silicone putty. It's flexible and fits like yours and allows you to stir without mess. It's not fancy, I never got past my prototype because it worked to too well.

I'll take a picture of it later in place, will make more sense.

@sixstringsmash , Ouuuh! I like that idea.

Are you using the single body screen, with single stem screen? If yes, then I could see that little wood accessory coming in handy.

If you use the double screen method, I pack juuust loose enough so that the herb is free to move around slightly between the two screens, just ever so slight. I don't normally stir or shake, but if you like to, then this method allows you to shake the stem to "stir" the herb. Just a different method to reach the same result I suppose.

@KeroZen Had a good tip about using your pinky finger to take out the second stem screen (if you want to use two). I use this method as well... but if you don't have a small pinky, or fingernails..well.. could be tough.

In any case, that little wooden stir collar would be a sinch to make, I'll make ya one if you like!

Yessiree I've been using the single screen method. I tried using the double screen method for a while, and while I like it and I do think it provides slightly more even extraction the single screen method is just more convenient, especially at night when I'm going through bowl after bowl like a madman

I am definitely going to take you up on that offer to make me a stir tool, thanks so much Dan! Sending you a PM now.
