it I was doing back to back, halfway into the second heat cycle
I have a white Neo and I've seen those "device too hot" messages as well. In my case it was mostly user error because sometimes I would double click to heat (max power) instead of a long click (your selected power level). If I did a couple of max temp heats back-to-back then I'd see this message. When I pay attention though, this doesn't happen.

I do think the terp surfer bowl could be a bit shallower but I've always felt the crystal bowl depth was way too big.

Now I am wondering if I have been heating my ( white ) Neo incorrectly. I double click, which I thought was simply a preheat for whichever power level I had already selected, then a single click to run that temp cycle. I need to go a grab my Neo and verify.

Mine is double-click the big button to start a heat cycle, one click to stop before it times out; Click and hold for manual, let go to stop; and then the small buttons engage the temp levels.

No, it sounds like you are doing things correctly. There are two auto fires. A long click (0.7s-3.0s) will fire for 30s at the diamond level. A double-click will fire at max power for preheating. My problem is that I was using a double-click all the time and firing at max temp which was overheating my unit.

Now I only double click once to preheat (max temp) and then I either long click, which fires for 30s at my diamond level setting or click and hold when I want to control the length of the heat cycle.

damn, I been doing it wrong, too. I never knew the 2x click was full power, and I never knew about the long click. Some experimentation's in order!

@TigoleBitties , you're the man! : )

me too... I was actually holding the button until it completed a preheat , and then double clicking which is what I thought started the heating cycle. that would explain why it got so hot. :doh: I will be so happy if I can get better results. and it's not like I haven't been enjoying the Neo

Same. I'm hoping it'll be a little more carefree. ; )

so I finally used my white Neo properly last night. I set it to two stars and pressed the button just until the bar meter appeared on the display and it heated at my selected temp. A second button click to stop the heating cycle and it worked great. I finished with a double click to engaging max power. I feel foolish having been using this vape incorrectly all along, it's not like I am a newbie. On the positive side, i feel like a have a new vape.

I think you speak for all of us! It's sort of hilarious that it's a year out of mfring and we're just learning how to use it! ; )
