And I've just asked Alan to be added to the waiting list... ah the circle of life ;)

Out of curiosity, when did you send your request?

Received my email on Friday last week and just started discussing with alan about what I want. I already have an underdog so ive been really thinking about trying to go for a metal housing but then again the beauty of wood intrigues me greatly.

I'd get both, or if only one, then wood.

I would definitely not pass up a chance to see what Alan can do with his wood. :brow:

His work is unbelievable. My HI is the most beautiful object I own. I'll probably be buried with it.

About 10 months and counting!

Somehow, I've managed to only expose the Buckeye Burl block to the elements long enough to take some pics. Gotta keep it safe... :ninja:

Although I do worry about the near-constant 70% humidity here during the spring summer...

Thanks for the concern, but that gif was chosen carefully, and not without knowledge of all the KP hate in that thread. ;)

I've noticed that the top half or so of my HI getting dull, even after giving it a good rub down. I know it's because of the heat, but is there any way to restore it to it's original luster, or is this unavoidable?

@catbird - Sorry about the wait. It will be well worth it. You never know what I might create by the time I get to your name. It will be something special in any case. Most of my roasting tubes also work for the UD so they well get along great.

@Alan - No problem about the wait; it will be that much more exciting when the time comes. I am eager for a wooden roasting tube as well, and glad to hear that your tubes will work for both -- definitely a plus!

EDIT: Oh, and some questions about wood. I notice that many people purchase their own wood to supply you with for their HIs. Is this preferred? Do you reduce the cost for those who supply their own wood? Wondering if I should get some wood ready, or just wait and see what you have...

If Alan doesn't have something you like and you're looking for nice wood, check out this thread. A fellow FCer is sourcing exotic wood for vapes & stems:

My original HIsaber, a Dark Walnut masterpiece, has definitely lost its "original luster" .. has been affected over time :(. Their is no doubt a difference, between the top & bottom half. I have given it lots of rub downs & plenty of love! What are we gonna do Stu (& other fellow jedHIs)?! Unavoidable &/or reversible? :hmm: :peace:

Would like to hear about that too ! If that's really the heat, does dealing-down voltage while not in use would improve?

BTW
The sword is in my hands, blue VK for the color !
Spalted Silver Maple - glasscore. I think I should find a name for it.
I will be posting pictures and more soon. First afternoon/night with the sword and already in love ! The choice wasn't easy but I'm conquered* that's for sure !
Found only after 2bowls that I could go over or down the fixed range from VK. Thought I would need more then 12 with the glasscore, but not really ! Used winecork-wand through water and dry : slower than SS of course but tasty and bit smoother. Still have to do some true ride and experiments. I was dial at 11.85v +-.

Thanks to jedHIs, I now have mine !

*can we use it that way, in English ?

Okay gang, I'm a little confused here, so please help me out...

Here is a photo of the glass heater cover with the heating element and ss sleeve installed.

ssglasshc.jpg

This is the only configuration provided with the glass heater cover now.

"This is the only configuration provided with the glass heater cover now." - Alan

Now, my understanding is that this configuration is known as the "Hybrid / HIbrid", not the "glass core."

Yet, you two have both said that you received the glass core model.

Spalted Silver Maple - glasscore.

So... Alan just sent me a sneak peek pic of my HIghly figured walnut, glass core HI with an ebony cap. It's GORGEOUS!

Now, did you mean that you received the glass *heater cover* with SS sleeve, or did you receive the actual all-glass core?

Mean no offense, dudes, just literally confused here, and feel this is an important distinction. And if you got all-glass, then I want one too!

Had some roasting tube orders getting backed up and I finally got them done. Here are the tubes I just finished.

july2014roastingtubes.jpg

Left to right. Monkeypod all wood 14mm WonG end, Ebony all wood 14mm plain end, highly figured walnut all wood 14mm plain end, hfw glass tipped 18mm WonG end, hfw glass tipped 14mm WonG end, cocobolo glass tipped 14mm WonG end, hfw glass tipped 14mm WonG end, purple heart glass tipped 18mm female WonG, hfw ss double tip 18mm WonG end, black and white ebony all wood 18mm WonG end, another shorter black and white ebony WonG tube, the tube on top is a double tip ss with amboyna burl wood.

@z9 - Glad you are enjoying the wood tubes. Your reborn HI will be home soon better than before.

@Stu - Some woods will show heat stress more than others. Soak as much wax into the wood as possible. I use a heat gun when making them to heat up the wood so the wax will soak in. A hair dryer might also get the wood hot enough. That is the only finish applied to the wood. There are no solvents or oils.

@catbird - Good question about the cost when wood is sent to me. I charge as if I was just using domestic wood since you would have already paid the premium price for the wood. If there is left over wood, we can work something out.

@Bvapst - Glad to hear it arrived safely and is working well. The slower draw of the glass heater cover and wine core tube gives you more time to savor the flavor.

@EveryDayAmnesiac - When I first made a glass heater cover it was just with the plain heating element inside. I was referring to it as a "glass core". I then added a thin ss sleeve to cover the heating element and referred to it as a HIbrid core. I found that the heating element without the ss sleeve allowed too much heat to radiate to the wood making it very hot so now I only make them with the ss sleeve covering the heating element. So they are really all HIbrid cores now. You have the ss sleeve on your heating element.

@EveryDayAmnesiac I was in the same confusion in the past about Hibrid and Glass Core peoples were referring to... and wasn't sure if there was actually an all-glass. So in fact there is NO all glass. The Hibrid is the "glass core" as this is the only HI with glass (heater cover). So if you would get an all-glass it would be exclusive I guess ;) as Alan said it would get too hot.

The Hibrid/glass-core (heater cover) Hi, does already get pretty hot ! Don't know how hot yours is, maybe you should consider this. This is why Alan offer light weight wood for glass heater cover. For comparison, my Spalted Silver Maple is really lightweight compare to my OAK WW SS-cover (heavy) but is getting as hot ! I can't handle it more than 2sec for taking it over the middle height. The base is ok !
Glass heater cover allow more heat to transfer to the wood while SS would retain it and thus less transfer (and faster extraction as well). Time ago I thought the heat would simply dissipate in the air but in fact the wood takes it.
Going to get HIlightened now !

EDIT* It's true he is hot on the top, but I realized this yesterday when he was "On" for a few hours. Here after more than 1h he only start to get hot to the touch. Dialled on 13v. Glass-core is definitely a new game... I'll report more later, I think I should wait a few days. One thing for sure : if you like low-temp and to sip longer : go for it ! Yesterday I realized (when the top was really hot and dialled on 11.85) that the extraction was good when the load is past few first hits. Just take a bit longer.

Sticklers customers isn't much a problem for him, he is perfectionist and answer everything (and even more !) Also he is responsible for it ,cause of the choice and possibilities... Only good
I didn't say publicly yet, THANKS @Alan !

how does the HIbrid compare to your SS core...and can you convection dab in the Hibrid??

I just got a VVPS off ebay...been using it a couple of days and it has turned my Hi into a beast!!!. I took it over to a friends house to let her vape some goodies. I guess her power grid was a little weak. I turned up the VVPS to compensate and loved it. it is also nice to be able to tone the Hi down just a bit to get some low temp vaping then crank it up a bit to get the rest of the goodies......

Agreed. I fuckin' love using my HI with a vvps. I'm a bit, how do you say, "stupid, idiotic, AND moronic" and enjoy not having to use any kind of skill whatsoever to get the temps I'm looking for! :)

Not necessary, but definitely a fun little luxury...

@Snappo I'm repeating in other words the answers I got by e-mail from Alan. Thought that was worth it. But thanks !

@hoyo77 I won't do such comment right now I need more playing for that ! I'll compare when my "running" will be done. For exemple I couldn't get same result as yesterday with the HI-glass core (don't know why yet..). That night I've been pulling SS WW through the VK to see how it compare.
Also the distance from the bowl with the wine-cork is bigger then I was used to. However the fact you can simply leave the log on it and have only 1 hand working is cool. It is possible to use only half of the wine-cork to get closer from the load in "manual" mode (I must do that with WW cause the ss core is too big for the glass). Also playing with the load-size will be interesting. I have a feeling that it needs a certain time (quite long) for the wood to take and keep the heat with the glass core as today it was not as hot than yesterday. Also the difference is today I was dialling on low (9V) while not in used, maybe didn't wait long enough. But probably convection-dab would be a challenge to achieve...dunno yet !
Also what do you call specifically convection dabbing ? I suppose you'll then use some kind of cotton or other fibber ? The product won't literally melt and bubbles but simply vaporize ? I'm not into "solvent-extract". Still have a small shatter-piece after some disappointing dabbing. Of course I've tried it with logvape but don't get the term "convection dabbing" (?). For me dabbing strictly equal : full melt on a nail.
Tomo I'm gonna try some bubblehash with glass core. But I never felt it needed much more heat to vaporize.

I took some picture, will be posting tomorrow probably. Also wondering if some people would like to see some model Alan had ? There was a sexy bamboo one I had difficulties to choose.

I was referring to your post you made on pg190...when you mentioned dabs are working great in log vapes. I still have a 2 or so months before my name is up...just trying to narrow the core choice down....probably get one of each.
BTW is amboyna burl a good choice for wood...well does not matter now..that is what I bought...lol

This was a personal opinion result of a disappointment from "dabbing" (with a nail). I wouldn't call it dab using a vape. I'm gonna try real dabbing with my own product : bubble hash home made. And most of all I'll try to get the nail on the right temperature ! But FTM I think nothing beat convection extraction (IMO).
So yes of course concentrates are vaping well with log ! About glass core I'll tell you later. Gonna try some Power Plan bubble with the glass core dialled on 12.59.

Have a good one everybody !
