The HI

The core design is so simple and efficient that permutations with tubes, adapters and draw technique seem limitless. Its a chalenge taking this little wooden beast through its paces and seeing what it can do.

Wow Alan, what will you come up with next???? What a great idea you have made happen! I am glad to see all the progression you have made with the HI, it is truly a one of a kind piece! Congratulations!!

Of course I love glass, it's a nice option for a log, but you have to keep the SS tube alive too!

Yes, all things being equal, glass is preferred.

Though honestly, I don't really understand the differences in the design - pros and cons - other than the improved flavour via glass. I'd perhaps reserve decision until I hear users experiences.

Alan's original post and picture of the GTV is on page 134 of this thread btw.

Almost there...
@Alan I am glad i gave you a tiny bit of inspiration after all the help you gave me!!!

I found that the flavor improved dramatically after trying the glass heat tube.
I use diamond bits to drill the holes and then a micro flame to smooth and round them off.

So from the sounds of it, a VVPS would be ideal with a glass stem?

As much as I love flavour, I don't want to sacrifice power, and I don't have a VVPS for the HI yet :/

You NEED yourself a VVPS! I have two!
Some strains I've found need an extra kick, or if i have a friend or two over it might need more juice to maintain heat between rapid hits. Then of course, having it set low and ready for you.

I'm thinking so too. Maintaining heat is the biggest issue with friends. Just waiting for my new accessories from Alan to show up first.

Ughh, I'm on deck and don't know if I can risk a glass core without seeing it in action at various voltages first. After waiting on the list for a year I am very hesitant to make any last second changes that deviate from the well trodden path.

What voltage is needed in the glass core to produce clouds comparable to the ss core using the stock power supply and how does this effect the lifespan of the resister? I have no idea what to do...may just wait and let Alan decide for me, but the safe bet I think may be to go with the ss. Ughh  Beautiful either way though.

Regardless of what you choose, you can rest assured Alan will take very good care of you, my friend and JedHI-to-be.

And it's nice to have another HI owner in the Pacific Northwest.

Can anyone in this thread direct me towards the VVPS discussion that already happened? I think it's about time I start figuring the VVPS thing out. Also, why wouldn't a VVPS from someone like Underdog work for the HI?

Are there any power supplies that won't burn out or is that something I'll have to deal with? It isn't too big of a deal either way since I generally unplug my HI after the evening is over and let it sit cold over night and until I vape again.

You just want any variable voltage supply that can provide ~5-15v at 1A+ (Give or take, we really use around 12v under 1A but you want to be prepared)

You can use something like the UD one and I have one that I use with my HI. I also have a larger tattoo power supply for my main use. You can even go crazy and get lab power supplies.

Even with my VVPS though I turn it off when I'm not going to be using it. The HI heats up fast enough that it isn't a concern for me.

Thanks Dr. P - A VVPS would enhance the experience with a glass core as well as with a stainless steel core but both work well at a fixed 12 volts. I am using mine with a fixed voltage power supply and really enjoying it. I can get maybe one more hit using a ss core unit after I am done roasting with a glass core unit, but the taste isn't as good. I am always working on the mad science stuff. Hope I can keep discovering new things.

jpdnkstr - Honduran Rosewood Burl would look amazing. Just have to find the right size wood.

hoptimum - The HI can be a little beast. So many different roasting techniques are possible. Fun to try them all.

rotax - I got some glass cores made today. They turned out well.

Ed - Thanks man. It will be tough to come up with something else. The glass core weighs 2.5 grams and the ss screws to hold it in weigh 2.5 grams for a total of 5 grams. My very first ss Toasty Top core weighed 100 grams alone. Amazing how things have changed in only a few years.

Dafni - I will definitely keep making ss cores. In fact, I just started making them all stainless steel again. The bottom plate will be a ss washer rather than an aluminum plate. I will save the aluminum for the glass core.

Thanks SativaLover420.

lazylathe - Glad we are able to help each other out. Everyone gets the benefit.
I drilled a carb hole in a 12mm glass mouthpiece one time. It was kind of a pain. Glad I don't have to do it with the new glass core. Would be really tricky drilling into the 10mm glass. I will just need to drill some intake holes into the side of the wood to the 3/8" power socket hole if I ever install a glass core into a Toasty Top. You could do the same for your design to avoid drilling holes in the glass tube.

Vapinghole - Glad you got back in line. You won't be disappointed.

HoneyAir - I need to find some ss tubing with a 10mm ID. Will give it a try if I find some.

Hoops - I would say just get one of each so you can compare. Both have strong points.

grokit - No Hickory HI yet. I have some but just not thick enough. I did just make a Beach Nut HI with a new ss core. Works very well and the wood doesn't store/conduct much heat.
