If people truly did what he preached in that song, the world would be a better place. I get happy and sad at the same time when i hear "Imagine", one of my favorite songs of all time and my favorite from John.

I raised my kids to love the Beatles. One of our favorite things to do was to take off for the Northern California coast when one of them put this CD in the car stereo.

I also remember my son getting in a fight at school because some kid said The Beetles made no contribution to music. I said, "Did you whip his ass"? He said, "Well,,,,,no,,,,,,,'she's' bigger than me".

Jeppy- Thanks for the videos. Some mighty fine ones.

BDV - Glad the Sumac is still holding up for you. I'm finding that woods with fairly springy grain holds up better with changes in humidity than woods with rigid and brittle grain. The properties of the wood will also change over time. The sugars in the wood immediately surrounding the core are sort of slowly caramelized as the wood becomes more brittle and less conductive to heat. Less heat is transferred to the wood as it ages with time and temperature. Wood damage due to heat is more a matter of the rate at which the heat is applied. The HI has a fairly low rate of heat transfer to the wood due to its core design. The lower the heat transfer rate, the longer it will take to transform the wood.

Hey Alan, how do you think western red cedar would hold up in long term temps ? I actually have some blocks of cedar. Beautiful wood grain and smells good too. Do you buy your wood in slabs or blocks?

I have made a few HI's from red cedar. It can have some really interesting coloration in the grain and the smell is very nice. I don't think that there will be any long term temperature affects. It is just more prone to dents and dings. I get my wood anyway that I can. Sometimes I cut blanks from large slabs. Other times I find wood that is just barely large enough. I only need a block that is 1.5 x 1.5 x 4". That give me so many more options for wood. If I'm starting with a 2" x 2" x 4" block, I can usually get a wood roasting tube in addition to the HI from the block of wood.

Makes sense. If I was to ship you a block of a type of wood could you make my top out of it. I still love that black walnut awlfumwell tho. I have about 3 types of oak, cedar, popular and maple. Is 2" thick enough? Looks like tops are wider. But you should know. Just curious.

I guess the bottom is smaller, huh? Duh lol. :)

I think Alan might need a little larger piece of wood for the TT. He was talking about the HI above.:)

You are correct mom. I need a chunk of wood 3" x 3" x 3.5" for a full size Toasty Top. I can install a Heat Island core and even do smaller size tops (w/ HI core).

BUZZHEAD - I have had people send me wood to use for making a HI or TT. We can talk about it when the time comes. There are so many interesting types of wood.

I was planning to use this cork to make an air heater but decided to use it for a roasting tube instead. I drilled a 10mm hole through the center of the cork and then bored a 1/2" hole in one end. Then I cut the 18mm taper. A 13mm glass roasting tube fits right into the 1/2" hole. The 10mm glass tube slides all the way through the cork and half way into the 13mm glass tube. The 10mm glass tube provides the stop for the 10mm screen. It is very easy to assemble and clean. The roasting and vapor path is all glass with the cork just providing the seal at the 18mm joint. The cork has been sealed with hot beeswax. It came from a 96 bottle of my favorite wine. So is this a ConG? It is made from the bark of a tree so maybe it is a BonG.

BUZZHEAD - Thanks. I can't wait to be able to make you a special top.

mom - Glad you like it. Sometimes you just have to make due with what you have. I accidentally sent a customer the wrong length 13mm glass roasting tips (1" rather than 1.25"). I was playing around with the glass tube to see what could be made from it and how it could be used. Here is what I discovered.

universaltube.jpg

I pushed the 1" long 13mm glass tube half way into one end of a silicone roasting tube. Then I pushed a 1/2" screen through the glass tube until the edge of the screen catches on the end of the glass tube. The screen is then pushed back from the bottom until it sets flat just under the 13mm glass tube and is held in firmly in place by the silicone. The glass tube forms a 1" deep roasting chamber with a 1/2" screen at the bottom. Plenty of room for stirring. The air flow is pretty much the same as my 14mm all glass roasting tube. The silicone ring around the silicone roasting tube is what I use for my copper aromatherapy cups so you don't burn your fingers. The tube will fit into into a 14mm female, 18mm male, and 18mm female glass fittings without any alterations. The silicone ring is only necessary if you are going to use it in 18mm female glass fittings. It will also fit onto a 10mm glass mouthpiece tube. You can roast with 13mm glass, 10mm glass nipple, 3/8" silicone, and 5/16" stainless steel. I am finding that it really isn't necessary to remove the screen for cleaning. Just wipe it with a alcohol soaked cotton swab and then blow it clean. It works really well on the 18mm male glass fitting on my DG mini but then works equally well on the 10mm of my Filter Flask. One tube does it all. The price is $10 which includes a spare silicone roasting tube and two spare screens.

Not the greatest of pics.It was getting dark,

I have got the wood bug bad I m afraid and have been in my shed all weekend playing.
Mine's the one on the right, minus a SS bowl, straight off the lathe:haw:.You can see the beads of wax peering out of the grains .It was fun and it slips nicely into a 14mm reducer for glass.

There maybe a few more coming. It fits the Hi and most other logs.
I m just waiting on SS bowls to finish them, but I hoped you guys might wanna see them.

I hope they are up to youre standard Alan.

the tube on the right above is one of my favourites. Its a redwood burl i picked up from Ed a while back which i femmed a little today, gave her a waist and hips and now she slips into a 14mm adapter which was my intention at first, but i got a little carried away as you do:) .Maybe i ll christen her Pammy.I like the fem shape .I think maybe I'll give that a go again.

I was hoping to make a wong next for my Hi!

I still love my Hi-Saber.it is almost 13 months old and still solid as a rock,no scorching inside and mechanically sound. It rocks! Thanks Alan

Wow all those tubes are nice and the cork is the shit! Very nice work Alan!

Good job Ubwade, nice to see your work!

I am still rocking my HI's Alan, as I said before the Afzelia Burl is my choice for the shop and the Sindora Burl is my piece for essence oils in my home. These are great vapes!

Alan, it's like your own little version of Tinker Toys. :p Love it! :D

Ubwade, those are just lovely. I can see you having all kinds of fun with this. Back when my husband and I used to refinish antiques, I would always marvel at how the wood grain pops when you apply a little finish (or in this case, wax). I always looked forward to that part of the project. It was like the icing on a cake. :D

I wonder if I should ever post all those close-up, slow-mo vids in here, of my collection. You never see the vape, but technically, the HI was used for every one.

there must be something in the air, because I am eagerly awaiting my lathe to show up! :D It's funny when you get picked to work with wood, I don't think you get much choice in the matter. I have been getting visions of burls and wood grains for daze, can't wait to be turning!

My HI is rocking strong too! On 24/7 and has been my main vape since I got it, putting the Cloud as my evening vape now. I am switching back and fort between the SS tip and the glass gong. I love the unrestricted flow of the glass, but prefer the hands free of the SS tip.

Those stems look great u bwade :D I think the most satisfaction comes when you build it yourself. Also, that's a very nice looking burl from Eds stash!

Just wanted to also give a shout out to Alan for being such a help with my woodworking questions. Thanks much! and thanks for the inspiration!
