With the solid fold-up clamshell unit PLUS detachable cord PLUS bags makes this seem like a great vape to transport to groups of people.

. . . i get the feeling this could be the next market giant like a volcano. if they have enough funding they could really develop the legitimacy of the herbal vapor market and position themselves at the front door. The Ion used it's temperature accuracy (accurate to within 2.5C) to market to medical users. Even after getting my lhs to only carry quality vapes, he still sells more Volcano's and Pax's than anything else. The former due to reputation and the latter due to fantastic marketing.

The challenge with new markets (i.e., the "herbal vapor market") is always the amount of time & money required to develop, and what your competitors are doing during that time. It becomes a cash-flow issue, how long before reaching profitability. It's doubtful that the herbal medical user segment is large enough in itself as yet; I presume mmj users constitute the largest subset and consequently the perceived need/value of the precision heat control, and customer assessment of its effectiveness in producing the targeted medical benefit, will be paramount to gaining traction in this segment.

But that still leaves generating sufficient volume within existing segments until such time the new market becomes sustaining. If the Herbie can be priced relatively close to its recreational competitors, it can steal share from those companies and use proceeds for new market development. If it comes in too high, it gets priced out of the mid range while the "medical" segment still gestates.

okay, well, a microwave oven at Wal-Mart is $30 retail. there is nothing in any vaporizer in existence that is as complex as a microwave. so price of a vaporizer is completely arbitrary above, say, $25. Factors might be how much you want to pay the slaves.

custom glassworks could justify a higher price, but that's not the herbie's market. And in general, a Cloud-like bong would terrify the herbie market.

The main advantage i see (and experience) with accurate, consistent, digital temperature control is the no-brainer aspect of use. There is NO learning curve. This solves the problem of peeps who can't roll a decent joint and don't want to buy a pipe.

Being able to hit a specific temperature is a side effect of good design -- so go ahead and trumpet it in the marketing literature.

With a new product -- that tries to open up sales to a new demographic -- the maker can either educate the user or put the smarts in the product. Sometimes you have no choice -- for example, at one time, IBM was the largest publisher -- cranking out all the computer manuals. In the case of a vaporizer, smarts can be added to the product.

But i don't see how the herbie is different from the ViVape. Unless they are doing sublimation with all that power.

...I'd be interested in knowing how the Herbalizer compares to the Aromed (which, btw, is in the photo), especially in terms of accuracy. The Aromed is 16 years old and Research&Experience has emphasized the same "holy grail" qualities in their marketing.

How exact is the temperature setting of the AroMed?
Vaporizing temperatures in the AroMed can be selected in 1°C/2°F steps from 60°C/152°F to 235°C/455°F. Inhalation of about any active agent, from essential oils to components boiling at high temperatures is possible.
Like in all other vaporizers, the hot air temperature is measured where originated, but only the AroMed has a built in processor, that calculates exact temperatures inside the herbal materials.
A comparison: Another vaporizer is temperature controlled by an electric iron thermostat with a measuring tolerance of +/- 15°C/59°F. Fluctuation ranges of 30°C/86°F are most likely. It has a knob to choose temperatures between 1 and 9.

Edit: I'm not sure if it's the temperature increments that are ±5⁰F or if this is the margin of error. Either way, I'm a bit puzzled as to how exactly this makes the Herbalizer revolutionary in terms of accuracy. Are they really saying other vapes can't match this?

This is something that I talked about with Josh, and yes that was an Aromed on his desk in the picture.

Beyond the use of a halogen bulb the designs are radically different. The Aromed has no thermal mass, uses a 50W bulb, and its temperature sensor is behind its bulb. The Herbalizer has an optimized amount of thermal mass, a 300W bulb, and has multiple temperature sensors with one being in the airstream right underneath the bowl.

Both can be set in increments of 1F or 1C. However, since the Aromed's temp sensor is behind its bulb and not in the airstream, the setpoint is only a rough estimation. Because it has no thermal mass and uses a low power bulb, it also can't maintain a stable temperature when being used to the level that the Herbalizer can.

We didn't use the Aromed while I was there, but I have used one in the past. From what I remember it took quite a bit longer to heat up initially, and would produce thin vapor if hit hard. The Herbalizer is claimed to maintain temperature within 5F while in use and I believe it. Based on the stuff mentioned above I'd guess with the Aromed it'd be more like 75F.

Numbers aside, I've hit both and wouldn't put them in the same league. Maybe some of the Aromed owners here can comment on some of the above.

heat up time for one...as well as heat down time (I think).

I would think they would be pimping sublimation by now if that's what was going on here.

And the ability to accurately measure, adjust, and maintain air stream temperature in real time. In this photo the pencil is pointing to the viVape's thermal sensor located at the base of its heater.

I posted some Aromed pictures as well, and in the last photo you can see the sensor location behind the bulb.

perhaps the composition of some herbs work well with a precisely set temperature
I think there may be something to this. Cannabis seems to have a lot of goodies that vaporize fairly easily across a relatively large temperature range. Other herbs certainly appear to have less resin and may require more precise conditions to be vaporized effectively.

This vape actually has me interested in other herbs. I've always been tempted to dabble, but not knowing at which temps to vape or whether I am hitting them or not has stopped me. I hope they produce some adequate literature on how to use the device with different herbs. I would love to vape some mint or eucalyptus at times.

I used to do this with the Aromed when I first started vaping. It worked great. Lavender was a very nice sedative. I've been thinking of giving it a try again, just need to find a place to buy herbs in Oslo.

The Aromed website has a lot of information on herbs, symptoms, boiling points, etc.

IMO, I tried several herbs in my Solo, they taste ok but definitely you'll need to exchange stems if you don't want to mix flavors, or clean them very well after each herb use...
And it's glass, I can imagine whips or bags really acquiring any flavor and will be a weird taste after :)

Is the fan in the herbalizer capable of on/off function? That would be great to know.

I assume it would have to be - if your not going to blow up bags you wouldn't want the fan or it'll blow away your whole load! (giggity)

Although turning the fan on while in whip mode it would give you one hell of a hit straight shotgun style!

I hope so, While it would give a large hit it would require the removal of the bowl after each hit. The Vivape "suffers" from this "problem".

I'm not a native English speaker, nor am I in marketing, but I can't believe a vaporizer manufacturer would go with "Spread the Herbies." I wonder if they include extra mouth pieces.

Another thing, if quality is the big selling point, why all the plastic and no glass?

Does this mean that my FB friends will be thoroughly informed that I would like to win a Herbalizer?

plus all the advertisers in the universe (and underverse -- Chronicles of Riddick is playing again) -- this will make for some very interesting banner ads as you browse the web. and you'll be getting a few emails.
