Can anyone get ABV as dark brown as josh posted? I'll try the test tomorrow, and I know that the fan assist makes a huge difference in abv colour, but that looks pretty dark - like cloud+ dark. Apparently glass should be able to be milked but the best I can do is skim or maybe 1%.

It is incredibly difficult to maintain temperature under unpredictable and variable flow conditions

i haven't found this to be the case, but i guess it depends on the geometry of the device and particularly on the power available to drive the heater. and i'm not using fans, so i can't address how that changes the response.

Question: does the Herbie use a classic PID control algorithm?

i would like to discuss this at greater length when you get around to it.

My ABV looks like that after two balloons @445°F. My friends, not so much.

I have to say to anyone on the fence....get one as soon as you can. This machine has taken vaping to another level for me. Like most others here, had all the set top pieces at one time, current one is a SSV...which is on the shelf for a while. Herbie does it all. Had card night on thursdays...they were impressed...most all still smokers but Herbie melted their minds. Made for easy pickings at hold'em. I really cant believe how efficient she is too...it takes about half the flowers I normally used in the SSV to fill the bowl 2/3 full in the Herbie..figure that out. I have zero complaints...zero...cant even complain about the price when it does what it does. I truly do not see the need for another vape for a real long time.
Nice up Herbalizer.

Personal tip: i tap the side of the bowl while hitting it to kind of stir it up....seems to get fuller hits when I remember to do it

There should not be a bag blowing problem, the fan is quite powerful. If you're having issues then the bowl is too packed, the bowl screen is clogged, or the bag is worn out and sticky or twisted up. Usually its a clogged screen - it won't look clogged to the naked eye. To test, use an unpacked bowl with the screens removed and fill an empty bag. It should take 35-45 seconds. A loaded bowl filled loosely (not packed), clean screens, etc., should still not take more than 45 seconds to fill a bag.

Thank you for your answer, very pleased with the communication you decided to have with us.

i confirm there were few bag blowing problems (even if there should not have been) such as fine grinded loads pushed onto the upperscreen and killing the airflow ect...

thanks to @Been Vapin for reminding, i expressed few questions about the device. There were few posts about it:

A big point is the air intake along the time and the unavoidable dust clogging the inside (now detailed path by our dear @Engineer ) . Will it need a clean? blowback to be unclogged?

Herbie has changed the game for me too even if i had to mod it to fit my needs.

Time will tell for all but i know we are the pionners of an epoque, enough combustion for us.

Cheers folks!

Be careful judging the darkness of that ABV. Josh's pictures have a serious colour cast. His ABV is even but it is more of a medium brown than what I'd call dark, such as produced by something like the T-Vape for example. That thing makes ABV that looks almost black.

I agree pics can be deceiving. I followed the instructions and pretty much have the same abv colour more or less, so I am happy that it is properly calibrated.

I just did a direct comparison of the Herbie on max temp, and the Cloud+ at 12:00. Both contained 1/8tspn of Sweet Tooth. It takes the herbie alot longer to cache the bowl....is this due to more convection? I can rip the load in one sometimes two rips with the Cloud, but with Herbie it takes double or triple that. Furthermore the ABV in the Herbie is yellow, vs tan with the Cloud.

I have zero complaints...zero...cant even complain about the price when it does what it does.

Although I agree with you that the Herbie is awesome for vaporizing, I still have a complaint about the price, because it doesn't do what it should - my wife and I purchased this unit a big part for the aromatherapy function, and I definitely feel let down in that regard.

Just noticed an interesting observation. The Herbie heats up fast yes, but cooling down takes a while, even with the fan assist - but still better cool down time than anything else out there, save for maybe the Solo? @lazylathe showed me a trick where if you physically blow air from your mouth on the heater port, it very quickly shows the temp drop. However, even when I decrease the temp to the lowest 143c, and flip to aromatherapy mode, and then back to vaportherapy mode, it's not at 143c, but actually showing higher.

Neh. The PID control algorithm was modified significantly because the system response is so non-linear.

I can't imagine that it would need to be cleaned, but I also have not seen one after 12 months of heavy use.
When it's said 1/2 bowl, is that filled right to where it widens? Can't wait to try this
That's about right. Doesn't need to be exact.

You're right.. the camera light setting was wrong. This pic was taken in the sun with camera on 'auto' following the same process as described - I hope it is better. Remember, the raw herb will affect the final appearance of the ABV.. initial moisture content, "quality," ambient humidity, grind, etc. So don't expect yours to be exactly the same.

@Engineer

You mentioned letting the cooling fan run its full course before turning the unit off. When I use mine it usually for fairly short sessions. I assume that if the cooling fan hasn't kicked on, it's ok to shut the unit off? Probably a dumb question but I'd like to keep my Herbie running for as long as possible because I got it second hand (no warranty). Thanks!

I love the herbalizer so much! If anyone reads this thread from start to present they shouldnt have any problems. Its changed my life completely being a heavy smoker for 25 years or more. A different buzz and better buzz than ever before. Im now smoking a 1/4 of the amount I was before so saving a ton of money in the long run. My wife loves it too however she hasnt asked what I paied for it I know she'd say It was a great investment too! It gets two huge thumbs up from a new guy to the vaping world!

While I'm not opposed to glass, I don't see the benefit of it compared to other materials, except possibly for the aesthetic. If the materials are inert and do not outgass (e.g. glass, ceramic, stainless steel, anodized Al, etc.), then they physically cannot impart flavor.

Although they do not out-gas, metals are not 100% inert/non-reactive, as is glass, for metals (even stainless steel) oxidize when exposed to oxygen, water and/or acids (& oils?), release ions and have an electrical charge. Of course the degree/effect of all that is surely so minimal as likely difficult, if not impossible, to quantify. If I had to guess I'd venture one might eventually see more vapor condensate (aka "reclaim") as a result with metal vs glass. Think world's least efficient ionic air purifier. lol!

Metal also has a much higher thermal conductivity than glass (~16x for stainless steel). That is a bit more easy to quantify as the heat transference to the media in the mode of conductive (and radiant, to lesser degree) does have an empirical effect on vapor that would otherwise be produced via convective heat. Think herb "cooking off" (or even combusting) when in contact with a metal bowl/screen/elb that has accumulated significant heat. Glass can do this as well, just not as quickly/efficiently.

Hey everyone, I'm a new member and my name is Jon. I just started Vaping 4/20 2013. And I'm not only a newbie when it comes to Vaporizing, but also to the 4/20 life. I've never smoked anything before.

I've only used/owned the Pax and Plenty, but I just sold them last week and my brand new Herbie is on the way! I'm on page 82 of this forum and already read some great tips. I'm going to keep reading but I won't be done before I get my Herbie. Do you guys have any essential tips I should know before I start Herbalizing?? (I not into using any glass parts or anything like that)

Thanks!

When i first received my Herbie this is what i did:
1- Unpack
2- Plug in and turn on and select temp
3- Grind material
4- Load magnetic bowl and close.
5- Place on Herbie and enjoy the delicious vapour!!!

It really is as simple as that!
Only real tip i can give you would be to remove the mouthpiece from the end of the whip, gives you more airflow.
And a medium/fine grind works really well!

To this day i pretty much have the same routine i did 9 months ago!!

Nice! The ease of use is good to hear. I'll definitely take the mouthpiece off. I have the Storz and Bickel grinder and it gets that medium/fine grind well for me.

Just upgraded a Santa Cruz Shredder and it is much better.

Can't wait to hear what your first impressions are!

My tip for you is to go easy. One hit at a time. Herbie extracts so efficiently and effectively, it can knock even the most experienced cannabis user on his/her ass in short order. Other than that, enjoy!

Thats whats up. I've heard the Shedder is the way to go. I'm just waiting until I feel like making the investment. I can't wait to test the Herbie out and report back you guys. It will be here Tuesday! I'm pumped!

I have a couple more questions based on my experience with the Plenty. I know the Herbie is lightyears of ahead of the Plenty, its just the only home vape I've used.

Any way. With the Plenty, depending on how much herbs I used, I had to put the pad on top of the herbs so it would vape evenly. Is that ever the case with the Herbie?

Also I read that packing the Herbie half way is best, but it will still work with different amounts. With the Plenty I found that I had to at least put enough to cover the surface area of the oven's screen for it to work, is that the case with the Herbie? If not, is their any range I should stay in or does it just evenly vape however amount you feel like vaping?

My tip for you is to go easy. One hit at a time. Herbie extracts so efficiently and effectively, it can knock even the most experienced cannabis user on his/her ass in short order. Other than that, enjoy!

I will definitely ease into it and enjoy. Thanks!
