The Herbalizer

Thanks @Madcap79 - for anyone curious, there is a small air leak on his model because I had to use a dremel to bore out the inside a bit since the glaze added thickness to the inside of the piece. I *hope* the finished product will fit perfectly without any need for modifications.

I've got a second ceramic prototype shipping early next week, I'll post an update on the fit, hopefully the 3rd round should be the last prototype before I list this accessory on my stores!

Since there is essentially a 4 week turnaround on these parts, and I know how impatient many of us (myself included) can be waiting for a new toy - as such I will offer them in-stock for same day shipping on my Etsy store in a select few colors (probably white and black), for a slightly higher price. Or if you want to save about $10 and have your choice of colors, you will have the option of ordering direct from my Shapeways store and wait the 4 weeks.

I'm still accepting PM's for beta testers. Once I accomplish a perfect fit with a single prototype, I'm going to order a small batch to confirm the fit is relatively consistent before I feel comfortable opening up orders to all herbie owners.

I know it's a slow process having to outsource the 3D ceramic printing, but I promise we're almost there!

The air leak is minimal. I haven't noticed any vapor escaping when in use with can or without. My HT will balance itself and is fairly sturdy. The 'Herbie Hat' as I like to call it, stays fairly snug on the top cap. It nestles in there quite nicely. It may be difficult to remove the upper half of the bowl from it for some but if you have any type of stir tool, it's pretty easy to poke it out. I'll try to post another video using a higher temp.:clap::science:

Thanks.
1. in the video, did you do self-draw and let the Herbie pump it up?
2. what exact water piece is that? Is there a similar piece but
with less diffusion?
Thanks

I did a self draw first and then fan assisted. The Herbie won't push air through this particular piece. It is a Swagger Turbine water tool. I'm sure there is a similar piece with less diffusion.

Guess who is now vaping like a BOSS??? First impression out of the box is WOW this is the best vaporizer i've ever used or owned in my 10 years of vaporizing! I still can't comprehend the heat up time, cool down time (I use the fan to blow off heat to speed it up), temperature accuracy, vapour quality, density, and taste/flavour. You can do anything you want with this beast! Worth every penny!

Is it me, or maybe i'm trippin, but has anyone else detected a "taste" to the stock white silicon tubing?. It's not offensive, but rather very sweet and tangy, but i'm wondering if it's due to my ultra sensitivity or am I imagining things. I tried using brand new 7th floor tubing and didn't detect this taste whatsoever.

Overall i'm busting about how awesome the Herbie is.....huge thanks to the Herbie team for making this even possible, big up on ya to @lazylathe for introducing me to the Herbie, and thanks to everyone in this thread who have provided valuable feedback and support, and to those who I have PMed (you know who you are!).... I am so happy that my medical needs are going to be fufilled so much easier!!!

I LOVE MY HERBIE!!

That's awesome @biohacker !!!
I see all your worst fears were confirmed ;)
I know EXACTLY what you mean regarding the whip smell. I taste it so much I had to switch exclusively to ssv tubing. What temperatures have you experimented with ?
Great to have you in the herbie fam :)

Thanks so much, it really does feel great being a part of the Boss Family, especially because I have the exact opposite of buyer's remorse. Let's face it, I was being extremely prudent, and carefully gathered my information, research, anecdotes, etc. because I did not want the feeling of losing a huge amount of money. It's not like this is a $150 or $200 purchase that would be easy to recover from....this WAS a mortgage payment! lol For those thinking that the Herbie is overpriced.....maybe if there was competition to it, but there isn't - this is a one of a kind piece of technology, that I know I cannot live without now!

I'm glad that you can detect the taste @Mrmrmrmr so i'm not the only one! I can't really smell it, but the taste is pretty strong and candy like, and leaves an aftertaste. I think I noticed this when @lazylathe came over and I tried his.... I thought it was the delicious buds, and it was to an extent, but it's the "sweet candy aftertaste" that i'm referring to. It's very tasty (lol) it's almost like some kind of additive or treatment was added for flavour. I'm not afraid of health repercussions, but it's masking the taste of my herb so I too am switching exclusively to the ssv tubing. But I need to buy the same diameter of medicial silicone like the white stock tubing so I can fit my gong adapter for bubbler hits, or an ssv glass adapter.

The other thing i've noticed so far that hasn't completely gone away are new smells. Like plastic, or hot electronic odours when the halogen bulb cycles or I put the fan on. It's kind of off putting, but nothing extreme and i'm confident it will go away after a little more use. What is the air path on this bad boy anyway? Is it like the Arizer Extreme-q in that fresh air goes over electronics before it gets to the biomass or is it isolated?

The one thing that I still am in awe over (even started thinking about it when I woke up in the middle of the night! lol) is that I never "feel" like i'm even getting a massive hit, and then I see what I exhale and holy crap! I can honestly say, that in my 10 years of vaping with well over a dozen quality vaporizers, I have NEVER see such THICK "BLUE" vapour before! I can get the meds/vapours WITHOUT the irritating heat!

I've tried temps from 160c (very nice start of whisps) all the way up to 229c (damn!) and have hovered everywhere inbetween. I only have one night under my use but today it's getting broken in if you know what i'm saying!?

I have tried various loads sizes and it is extremely efficient, but I still think there is room for my E-Nano in my collection....I can whitewall glass with specs in the Nano......the Herbie will vape those specs just fine, but not even come close to whitewall. I still think there may be room in my collection for the Cloud as well. Different stroke for different folks, vape signature, eye candy, etc. all come into play. But at this point if I only had a choice of ONE desktop to replace them all, there is no question AT THIS POINT that it would be the Herbie!!!

I tried playing a bit with the aromatherapy pad and the included defunk oil....I fucking love that scent! Any idea what essential oils it consists of? The only thing I haven't tried yet it vaping concentrates but I have some nice shatter and budder so we will see how that goes!

I'm kind of paranoid with having ABV dust or possibly concentrate go through the bowl and into the halogen heater void.... I do see alot of dust come out when I carefully stir the bowl.

Lastly, after max temp, the ABV is coming out absolutely beautifully even medium brown! Love it!

Are you guys finding medium/course grind works better than medium/fine?

One last thing.... pretty sure I felt more medicated last night....vape signature I suppose, but I had a more intense body feeling... more to come later so please stay tuned!

Edit: I'll be playing this song ALL DAY LONG!

bio-h, have you tried soaking the whip, like in Dawn detergent and hot water? I'm kind of sensitive to plastic smells and find that often helps get rid of 95% of the smell. You seem like vape connoisseur, do you happen to own a miniVAP? If so, how do they compare?

I just got some molded plugs from Ratchett (for cleaning glass pieces) that were just "minted" and the soak in Dawn water helped to purge the vinegar smell.
Keep the Herbie reports coming.

@biohacker maybe try some ISO in your whip to get rid of any lingering smell/taste. As far as grind goes, I prefer a finer grind, IMO it vapes more evenly and I start getting clouds quicker. But to each their own, just make sure not to over pack the bowl, that seems to effect the vape quality more then anything. But just play around with grind, amount in the bowl, and temps. You will eventually find your perfect formula

@MinnBobber thanks for the compliment, I always choose quality over quantity, and I unfortunately do not have a minivap, although I have had my eye on one for a while!

@MikeInMiami thanks for the suggestion, I did try the ISO and hot water but no change. It's definitely in the tubing. It's not a big deal, I like the wider diameter 7th floor tubing better anyway.

Continuing to love the Herbie!!!

Has anyone tried to herbalize coffee and botanical? lol It said ENERGY!

I was going to try it this morning @Stu, herbalized with a Sativa (hmmmm, Green Crack!), but since you only tried it ONCE, now i'm shitting my pants LOL

My goodness I think I can still feel the Herbalizer effects from LAST NIGHT! LOL

Pet peave so far (but nothing can be done about it)....regardless of stock tubing or bigger 7th floor (bit better with 7th floor), the tubing is always kinking especially around the bowl, and it restricts airflow completely. Minor annoyance and just have to watch it.....it's been years since i've used a whip and i'm probably just not used to it. I think the Arizer tubing is more "rigid" but also not as high quality?

Was playing around with unground bud last night on 229c....OMG!! Just broke little pieces off and saw WHITE vapour for the first time lol. Definitely have been noticing different colours of vapour, this is a first for me.....it's always been white, and with Herbie it just looks different, more blue.

I don't think I can ever get tired of the Herbie!

I'm with @Stu on this one. The caffeine is way stronger when you inhale it imo, so be careful.

Once I was aware and a little more careful, teas are lovely. I have a Moroccan mint green tea I like to mix with sativas. Tastes delicious.

Coffee doesn't interest me but tea does. I've got a Kenyan black tea, mountain grown. So do you mix at something like 90/ 10 cannabis/tea or ??
Could you also mix homegrown mojito mint, harvested and now dried?

Thanks

The Herbalizer bowl is pretty small, so I usually go 50/50. Adjust if you think the caffeine might get to you, then adjust down.

As far as the mint, I'm sure you could! The Herbalizer comes with a bag of peppermint which isn't half bad.

I have never used caffeine for alertness.
I do not drink coffee, and never have.
I do believe it can work when Vaporized as a stimulant for some people, although it did
not do anything for me.
Photoon2011-05-22at12482.jpg

I spent 27 months testing and vaporizing every herb, and food product that grows.
While some did have flavors, and essences that were not totally terrible, they had very little desirable effect on me. (Spearmint leaves did make me want to pee a couple of times, but then again I drank much liquids!) The only plant matter that affected me when vaporized other than Marijuana was Tobacco.
While I am glad that I spent the time doing this, I would not waste such time ever again, and after giving each plant/herb/tea/etc a good few days of heavy use to seek potential effects, I will just stick to Marijauna for vaporization.

Herbalizing coffee (ground?) with weed, what a way to wake 'n bake :freak:

You're on the right track, just use the two types of tubing together

Hey folks.

I've had an herbalizer since July or so from Massdrop. For whatever reason I wasn't having the keenest time with it. I wasn't getting the same sort of clouds as I'd seen on reviews from The Vape Critic on youtube. He was able to get very nice hits without a fan assist, and I just wasn't getting that. Plus my whip tubing just never has felt secure and kept popping off too easy, which was getting frustrating.

Needless to say, my Herbalizer has been pretty neglected as I'd been sticking to my portables.

However, I have been motivated to give the Herbalizer another crack. After allowing for a longer warmup I'm getting more respectable clouds (though still not like I'm used to getting with my Ascent.

But the game changer for me has been utilizing a new mouthpiece in lieu of the metal tip that is sent with the Herbalizer.

I had been working with Ed over at Ed's TnT (http://www.edstnt.com/) to come up with a few custom mouthpieces for my Haze vaporizer. We're still working on getting that perfect, but we had an "a-ha!" moment. Ed has delivered me an incredible mouthpiece that serves two purposes.

1. It is a natural wood replacement for the metal tip that the Herbalizer comes with. I believe that it is Blackwood, I'm sure Ed will correct me if I'm wrong. The swap is as simple as pulling the metal tip from the whip tubing and sliding in Ed's wood stem. It's a perfect fit with a seal that keeps.

2. It is also a 14 mm connector for your favorite water tools. I only have an F-bomb in my arsenal currently, but this little beauty will allow folks to connect their whip tubing to their favorite 14mm water tool with ease.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the mouthpiece that the Herbalizer comes with. However, I just prefer the mouthfeel and draw from the wood stem, and I think it gives a little added touch of class.

I have had this little stem for a few weeks now probably, but wasn't really able to give it a true test spin until a few nights ago. I was so impressed. The flavor was superb, the draw was nice and even, and it fit nice and secure with my F-bomb water tool. It just felt natural. On top of that, it still allows the lid on the Herbalizer to close up nice and tight. I just don't see myself using the metal tip again at this juncture.

The only other thing I want to do at this point is find some longer whip tubing and I think the Herbalizer will move to the forefront of my list!

If you folks haven't checked out Eds thread here or his website, please do. He and I have been in communication for a few months now and he's always been a gentleman, and I think he's a true craftsman creating functional works of art.

If you guys are looking for an alternative mouthpiece or would like to be able to connect to your favorite watertools directly from the whip, please check him out.

In any case folks, let me try to attach some pictures. No action shots, I just snapped these before getting ready to head into work! Enjoy!

I'm having trouble embedding from imageshack, but I'll toss in the URL. I will try and correct later, promise!

@Ratchett, I am loving your adaptors man. I don't have any stand alone water tool, only the F-bomb. But what you're producing is looking solid. Have you looked into crafting a new mouthpiece at all for the Herbalizer? Keep it up, my friend!

I don't think I can ever get tired of the Herbie!

I replaced my stock whip with a removable setup:
BaKP3zF.jpg

My whole "beefy whip" setup as seen here:
  • 3/8" ID High-temp Silicone tubing (McMaster-Carr)
  • 18 male/14 female lo-pro GonG adapter (on bowl with rubber grommet)
  • 18 female/14 male GonG adapter (on whip)
  • various bits of wider tubing for connections & grip
  • mouthpiece (I used another GonG cuz glass rules!)
It's so convenient to be able to swap from whip to water in a second, I'm using the whip more often. I can get those super-flavorful hits from the whip at low temps, and then boost the temp and toss on a hydratube! Having the whip clearable like this might prevent a miniscule amount of vapor loss—those little puffs herbie gives off push air out of a cleared whip instead of pushing precious vapor (I remember someone bemoaned that a while ago). @biohacker, with the thicker tubing and the two GonG adapters, I never have a problem with the whip kinking or folding.

I like a short whip, so I cut mine to fit just once around the whip tray. My herbie has long been topless, which is just as well because the top will not fit over the GonG in the whip.
AK85Ptr.jpg

I sometimes use an (almost) all-glass pathway: j-hook, right-angle GonG, tubing. I put a short section of tubing between the GonG and the j-hook to act as a washer to stop the glass sections from grinding against one another while shifting.
QzmwgsK.jpg

It works well, but can be fidgety having to lift both GonGs together, not to mention getting the bubbler to sit on something at just the right height!
