The Grasshopper Shipping Poll

When do you think the first Grasshoppers (in BOXES!) will ship?

What I'm saying is if you were going to make a knockoff grasshopper wouldn't it be better to beat the actual grasshopper launch in order to satisfy pent up demand by people who aren't patient enough to wait for the real thing?

Living the vape life
Just ordered mine and paid for it. So we are looking at around 2 months wait time, correct?
Might be longer. There are more than 3,000 backers and preorders in line before you, and depending on how fast production ramps up it could be a while before they get to recent orders. I wouldn't expect any sort of concrete date until the majority of backers have been fulfilled. Anything now is a guess at best.

When It officially is released are they planning on raising the price or does anyone know?
Trevor wrote me before I decided to preorder that the price will go up when it's officially released. He doesn't know by what amount, but the GH team would like to stick to the philosophy of being the most value added portable vaporizer on the market. (I love that)
My only concern is that they've been consistently underestimating their projections from the beginning. If that continues once full production begins, and an unforeseen event happens that requires a huge cash infusion to fix, will it not bankrupt the company in a worst case scenario?

I'm all for a fair price point, but if they need to buffer their cash supplies, I'd rather them TEMPORARILY raise the prices a little more on the higher side.

I truly believe this vape is as close to a game changer as you can get, and it'd probably sell at just about any price level compared to other vaporizers on the market at present time.

It would be a perfect time for an established vape company to jump in and utilize GH's idea and possibly develop and launch a similar vape before GH can actually meet demand. If I was with a successful vape manufacturer I would do that and you can bet this has already caught the eyes of the Chinese knockoff artists.

Just to be clear, I don't support knock0ffs or even a company jumping in with a similar product but business-is-business and I can see it happening.

Easier said than done.

The GH heater is proprietary. You can't just grab some free designs online and make a similar heater. The only thing we know about the heater is that they coiled a 36mm long vapor path into a 5mm tall 3D printed part. I don't think it'd be very easy to even dissect the oven and fully understand their design - you'd need a copy of the 3D model to slice apart and see how it's built.

It would take years for another manufacturer to copy the "GH Idea".

If anything, we'll see Atmos make a lookalike "vaporizer" which really combusts the herbs in seconds

Can I get a picture of the box in your hand so I can get a perspective? I really like that people are saying that it is little, because where I live usually the post office taxes are given to heavy objects, mostly...

It is also a bummer that you didn't received your ss case, you should email trevor about it

From Mankus on reddit:

I asked Trevor about this beginning this month. His answer was "The Ti case is not ready yet but we will not delay your order for it."

So it sounds like backers who ordered a case will get a Ti case when they are available. When I pre-ordered in February the Ti case was not an option. SS cases should be in stock.

Yeah - I doubt anyone is going to design a totally new one in any short time frame. I think the greater likelyhood is that parts and design get ripped off and cloned somewhere in China (coming str8 out of the existing factory) and they wind up selling a bunch of clones before disappearing due to legal pressure.

The heater's being printed in the USA. And the parts are being sourced from multiple different suppliers, and assembled in the USA.

I honestly would be impressed if China could even make a knockoff work half as good as the original

Sounds like we have another reported GH in the wild!

Ive got to say, and I cant be the only one; At no point during this whole saga have I felt this pessimistic about delivery. Something feels off to me. I hope Im wrong cause I really want one of these!

edit: sorry to piss on everyones fire, Ive been really positive about this since I backed in '13, Ive just run out of enthusiasm I think.

Knock offs are made pretty fast in China. All they have to do is call it something else with a slightly different spelling - The Grasshoper, Grashopper or Grasshoppor. Plenty of folks don't keep up with vaporizers like we do. Sometimes it's even hard to tell the difference and many times it's really obvious.

The most of the parts were made in China.

True, but the heater is the key part that will be tough to replicate and that part is 3D printed in the US. I think that is why people are saying it will be tough to create a knockoff.

Right now it just seems to me that the claim of thousands per week is reaching really high if they can't even have gotten the holiday backers theirs within a weeks time, let alone 2 weeks from update to end of month. If by July 1 they aren't even doing 250 units a week, I find it hard to believe they are able to hit thousands let alone 1000 a week.

Not saying I doubt shipping, but with their track record I'm not holding my breath for them hitting this goal either..

Still taking pre orders though. Not shy about that.

So hard to say without seeing the assembly process and how many they have working there. Could be as easy as piecing together a few legos or rocket surgery for all we know. But if they are first training people to assemble them, it would start out SUPER SLOW for the first 100 or so and then really ramp up fast.

I understand that but 100 to thousands is a huge learning curve...

I'm not an expert by any means but I've worked production assembly lines and based on my general knowledge and what I can see of the grasshopper's design I don't think this will be a problem for them to achieve. Once someone gets in the groove they should be able to crank out a good amount an hour. Then it just depends on how many assemblers they have working. Based on the size of their space I'm guessing what, maybe 12 people could work side-by-side comfortably in there?

I'm curious to know, and maybe will ask Trevor when I confirm my shipping address, do they have each person go whole Hopper or does each person do a piece and pass it on. I'd want to do the clickers.

Honestly I could care less how they do it, but would love for nothing but them to succeed at this. I'd be more concerned if he honestly still feels that they will make this goal or if its optimistic updating..

If you were in production you would know that 1000 of anything takes time. Hell, it would take me an entire shift to make about that many plastic washers on a lathe. Even if a hopper takes 10 minutes to go together, one person can do 48 in a shift given a full 8 hours.. who knows maybe more hours in the shift. So with 10 people at that rate yes, they can get that many but they aren't too transparent about this kind of thing.

Just excited to get it. I see at least one early bird got theirs, would be interested to know how all the holiday backers are doing

I kind of look at it this way... when you have driving directions to a place, you stop and look at each and every turn, read every sign and look in every directions to make sure you are doing it right. After you've been there, you just drive there without thinking. This is how I see assembly line production when it starts out. So maybe the first 10 for anyone will take a long time since they need to stop often, ask questions, forget steps and so on. After that, it's like a rubix cube master at work.

Yup that is my photo it is tiny I was driving and could send petnature one through hangouts but not post here yet. I posted some thoughts and photos in the discussion thread but unless I wind up breaking the rules I will post the photos here but if you have questions check the discussion thread.

Thanks for those photos! It really does just look like a fancy pen when out in the open like that. Nice. I like the silicon cap to keep the smell in too. I hope the leather case works just as good.
