This is my main problem with the FF. For me the hits are as harsh as the LB so I blame the short, dry vapor path. I realize that my sensitivity is not the norm, but it is an issue for me.

:peace:
I usually dont have a problem with the hits, its very strange but my weed is also getting on the older side so maybe now that its drying out a bit the hits might be getting harsher for that reason.

Hi, just wondering about the ff, what's the taste like from it? I've got a iolite, pnp, pax, solo and a mv! Solo and mv for me taste amazing! Does the ff taste as nice as solo or mv? Thanks

Just noticing now that the mAh is 770 on the new and 750 on the old...

So as far as I understand this, Li-ion refers to the chemistry of the battery (same as the last), Li-polymer means that this battery has flat cells (like the battery in your phone).

The old one just saying Li-ion probably indicates that it has round cells (imagine two AAs in the little black box). You need two of them to make the 7.4V the device needs (Li-ions run at 3.7V instead of the 1.5V in your imaginary AAs*).

Since the new battery (probably) has flat cells instead of round, they can fill the space (slightly) more effectively, this bears out with the mAh and Wh ratings being slightly higher.

The chemistry may be slightly different, so perhaps these ones will age a bit more gracefully, but maybe not. Time will tell on that one.

In short, the new battery should run your Firefly 3-4% longer than the old one, and may have better longevity since it's a new design, but if so it probably won't be noticeable.

It is nice to see you back here. Your tear-down pix are very popular, and to me personally, very helpful. If I didn't say it like ten months ago, thank you!!

I'm glad you liked them. I have to figure out how everything works, so once I got it, it was only a matter of time before it came apart. Luckily it's actually a nice design so it's pretty easy to get into without causing damage, as evidenced by mine operating for many months (coming up on a year) after disassembly.

*Warning, seek medical attention if your imaginary AAs are actually running at 1.5V instead of the doctor recommended 100 millivolts.

I cough sometimes....but the hits are not harsh. Cool, and smooth. At least until the last few hits before the more charred flavor occurs.

While we're on the subject......haven't used all the vapes you mentioned...but of all the vapes I have, including desktops, the FF has, by a mile, the smoothest, coolest, tastiest, most natural flavor. Taste is the FF's true wheelhouse...it blows away the Solo flavor, in my opinion anyway. YMMV and all that, but for me, the FF is the flavor king. At our house, FF stands for Fantastic Flavor.

So my new Firefly replacement arrive from VapeWorld today. My unit was running outside spec. The replacement was free btw.

Wow. Im amazed. I was already in love with my firefly, but now after using one that running correctly, its even more amazing. Before I was barely able to take long draws due to harshness. My material was charring black in 2-3 draws. Now Im able to take as long a draw as I can without it feeling harsh. The flavor is amazing. Before I got 1 good flavor hit and all others tasted combustion like. Now im getting good flavor hits the whole way through. My last unit, 2 draws and my herb was charred. New unit, I took 3 draws and opened to stir, material was just starting to brown. Opened up again after 3 more draws (6 total) and material was nice light brown.

And the effects are much better. 3 draws this morning got me to where 6-7 draws used to get me on the bad unit.

Summary: VapeWorld has great customer service, new firefly has doubled my love for this device.

Iv never had a portable that vapes so evenly, I love that about the firefly. Im sending mine in soon for a replacement, I believe its set to too high of a temp which kills my batteries within 1 bowl.

Well I can say this much, when you sorted it all out, the taste is almost exactly as the way it smells.

As an example, the sweet pipe tobacco i use really does its job whenever I take a draw and i feel the vapor touching my tongue, i can taste the sweetness :)

For my normal tobacco which i used to smoke, I can tell you that it tastes closer to the real thing than any e-liquid ever did. I cant tell you whether you like the taste, I cant really say I love it, but I might have to find some new form of tobacco which does taste amazing when vaporized.

Its even more amazing to see how much vapour cloud you can produce when you figured out how the device works (and in my case figured out my FF was not working properly at first, air leaks and all)

Either way the taste is astonishing :)

How many hots do get from the bowl? Mine is the same. But the temp only rises when you hold the botton down

Has anybody figured out a good way to reclaim the oily resin that collects on the lid? Like, without just absorbing it with iso and waiting for it to evap?
I use a tooth pick or u can use one of those dental teeth scraper things. I should start collecting for cookies :)
Here's' a video. The ABV at the end looks like it has dark spots, but it's just the shitty camera and lighting. It was all green still.

:peace:
Wow thank you for that. Great video. But did you feel that your herb was much dryer maybe a little cooked before u put in there?

So tomorrow Im going to try to go to home depo and try out some tubes to fit on the firefly and then I will go to my local smoke shop and find the water tool/bubler/bong to fit. Has anyone done this before?

That herb had been sitting in the chamber for over a week, so it was pretty dry. I had it packed before I went to a party, but never needed to hit it so I left it loaded.

Did you notice in the second half of the video the IR showing exactly where on FF body was absorbing the heat? That was the main reason for the video, but I figured I'd kill two birds, so....

I have, bought the food grade silicone from amazon. 1/2 inch inner diameter.

The taste is compromised imo, but the hits are massive. I can usually get 1 tasty and 3 milky hits per bowl. Stir in between each hit for maximum efficiency.

I recommend drawing as slow and steady as possible until you see an undeniable vapor build up, then pull hard to avoid a harsher hit. The harder draw introduces cooler air, but I find that by that point the vapor production has started and won't stop.

Okay ill keep that in mind thank you. I just stuck a bendy straw in the mouth piece. It worked pretty good if you do it right lol.

God i love this thing. But seriously, Only one thing that REALLY bothers me.

I have no fingernails. Im having a very, very hard time trying to open up the cover. Good riddance that confirms I have a real Firefly and not a cheap chinese fake, but damn..

Anyone has any ideas on how to make it easier for myself? lol.
What's even worse is that I have overly moist hands most of the time, it probably increases the difficulty even moar.

im fairly certain my replacement battery i got is bad. it never lasts more than 3 hits. the strange thing is the voltage seems to be ok but the firefly thinks its dead. bought on 12/7/14. was there a bad batch around this time?

And theres a little gap on the side above the on and off botton and on the other side.

Those little notches are kinda brilliant. I have like no nails and I have no trouble opening the lids, even when the magnet is super strong.

Throw a pencil and hit a bad batch these days. Seems to be a lot of bad batteries lately. I got three last October that are all fine, but I guess I got lucky. Have FF send you a new one...they're used to it.

EDIT: Re-reading your post, I would suggest toggling your FF off and back on the next time this happens. It's not uncommon to get a false red...if that's what's happening, toggling usually resolves it.

mitchgo61,
My second battery is already showing signs of significant wear. Less than 3 months in and I only got 10-12 hits on this last bowl. I probably average 10-15 seconds of button pressing per hit. I estimate that this battery has only been through 30-40 charge cycles so far. With brand new batteries I tend to get 20-25 hits per charge. Seems like that's getting cut in half after only 3 months of light-to-moderate use. I love the functionality of this vape, but the battery life is a serious issue IMO.

Just bought a ff at lhs. I'm quite disapointed. I've previously owned pax, pax knock off, mflb, airizer solo, volcano digital, herb iron vape attach, dbv, DaVinci ascent, indica v1. A few life changes caused me to lose my vapes and go back to combustion. Staring at blunt today and coughing shit up I decided it was time to buy a vape again. I decided to go firefly for convection factor. I've been hitting it more or less like my old launch box but the vapor is lacking. I'm grinding Finley, using good indoor grown materials. I've read through the best of thread and tried using some technique tips but to no success. I'm only on my 3rd bowl. Maybe I'm expecting more then I shold because of the steep price?

Pack dense. Hold the button for a four count. Draw steady, up to the resistance point. Hold the button down for the full 30 seconds and keep drawing after you release.

That help at all?

well first off you dont want a fine grind, second off you dont want to hit it like your launch box... So yea you wont be getting any good vapor. When you pack it you will want a medium grind that is not packed, just put enough in there so its flush with the vape and then add a little mound on top of that so it pops out of the bowl a little bit, but do not pack it down.

A trick I learned was to hold the button so it flashes 3 times and then start inhaling fast enough where you feel resistance but not too fast where you are really forcing it. Inhale for a while and then see if you get vapor, the second time I hit it Ill watch the light flash twice and then start inhaling doing the same time, and for every hit after that you can pretty much just hold it and start inhaling right away or wait for 1 flash on the indicator.

Pack dense. Hold the button for a four count. Draw steady, up to the resistance point. Hold the button down for the full 30 seconds and keep drawing after you release.

That help at all?
Youre not supposed to pack it dense at all, its reccomended that you pack a light medium grind bowl. Packing it dense will just restrict more airflow and create more room for error with over vaping the herb.

Here is some great help I got from a reviewer named VaporizerWizard who really helped me nail the technique.
_______________________________________________________________________________
"I prefer a coarse grind with my Firefly. I have around a half dozen grinders and my santa cruz shredder produces the most chunky coarse grind and seems to work the best. If you check out my firefly video (it will skip to 2:33) you can see how full I like to pack my bowls.

With packing it, don't rally smash it down, gently push it into the bowl, and leave a slight mound on it

Then when you use the vape: For the first draw, when the firefly is completely cold and not warmed up. I preheat about 4-6 seconds, so turn it on, hold down the heat trigger, count to 4-6, and then start drawing without ever letting off the trigger.

Now for draw speed, The easiest way I found to explain the perfect draw speed is to have you draw harder and harder until you feel draw resistance, then back off a bit. Now all you do is just take long slow inhales until either the 30s heat timer shuts off, or your lungs are too full.

Also long slow deep inhales are best. lets say you preheat for 6 seconds for the first hit, that means you get 24 secs left to draw (30 second heat timer), I usually have a pretty solid cloud on the first hit, but draw 2 and 3 are wicked, no preheat needed, just hit the trigger and start drawing. Once you get used to that draw, you can get incredible flavor, and you can get monster clouds if you want. You don't always have to go for monster clouds too, sometimes I prefer to take a dozen of smaller draws, rather than than 5 long draws.

Some people like to preheat, let off the trigger, and re-start the heating cycle again as they start to draw. In my experience this greatly reduces the consistency, and it also seems to go through my battery noticeably faster"

Says who? If you've read this thread for the past 14 months, you'd know that A. everyone has a different approaach B. not everyone's approach works the same for everyone else.

I've owned EIGHT FF's in the past 14 months. I use my FF's every day, and have probably logged over 1200 FF bowls since Dec '13. I personally find a densely packed bowl works way better than a looser pack, so I'm trying to help a new user who isn't happy with his results. Like everyone else, he'll have to find his own method in order to be happy with the FF, but there is no hard and fast "supposed to" approach with the FF.

There is no one right way to be successful with the FF. If one specific approach worked for all users this thread would be a lot shorter.

Well considering firefly themselves recommend a more lightly packed bowl, and nearly every vaporizer review I have seen on the firefly says the same. Go ahead with your dense packs but I seen no need for it considering it needs to be stirred throughout the bowl. I would find packing it to be annoying as well, all I need to do is give it a few shakes and the bowl is ready to be evenly vaped again. I get massive clouds even with a lightly packed bowl and extremely even AVB. I have tried using a fine grind with more herb than just a light pack and it usually ends up with an overvaped bowl that is extremely uneven and usually dark brown just in the middle.

Also why have you owned so many firefly's? That seems extremely excessive to own eight within a year, do they just keep breaking on their own or is it user error?

Not saying your technique is wrong by the way, its just the majority of tips I have heard throughout my research and works the best for myself.

I have been getting some nice hits I'm quite vaked at this point, I don't think I understood the vape , the heater shuts off and I Haven't neared combustion. I bought an eighth to grow through the ff , girl scout cookies and San Diego kush I'll take abv shots later, I found packing z bit gives denser vapor

It depends on who you speak to at FF. Each of them gives you a different approach. Like I said, everyone finds their own path. Considering at this point I'm on a first name basis with most of the FF staff, I think I've heard nine different approaches. Even the two designers do not agree on the best way to use it. Some FF staff will suggest pulsing the button during the hit...one of the designers told me in email, quite specifically, "never pulse the button". Which is right? Only you can answer that for yourself. Just be aware of what the different techniques can do (like pulsing raises the heat considerably....great for a cooler FF, bad for a hotter one). Since no two FF's seem identical, no two approaches work for everyone and every device.

Also why have you owned so many firefly's? That seems extremely excessive to own eight within a year, do they just keep breaking on their own or is it user error?

"User error"??? Seriously??? :doh::bang:

Well, since you asked so nicely....I've owned 8 because I've bought two, and each has failed and been replaced three times. Each of my two FF's is currently on #4 of its warranty cycle.

Those of you who have had zero problems with your FFs can thank me for eating up all the law-of-averages slack for you. You're welcome. :p
