That is the correct placement for the screen. It's meant to sit directly on the steel plate, with the edges just underneath the glass bowl. You shouldn't have black ABV at all....mine never gets that dark. And while the unit will get pretty hot if you have a long session with long button pushes and not enough drawing after the button is released, what you are describing doesn't sound normal to me. Worth a call to FF to see what they say. I would guess your coil is misplaced and causing too much heat too quickly, from what little data we have on your FF so far.

My abv gets black every session. More in the center of the bowl. I thought I wasn't shaking/stirring the herb around early enough but it gets burnt every time. The device gets extremely hot, it's almost scary using it back to back. I contacted FF last night through email and it looks like I'll be sending it back in. I'm a bit upset only owning it since Wednesday and I've been following this thread since it started. I have bad luck naturally

Edit: I've tried different consistencies and different strains with the same results. Thin vapor until combusted. Please let me know if this is user error I want to believe so :(

Team NO SLEEP!
No doubt, from all the posts I have read in the past months, Firefly's customer support has been all positive and they have [without hassle] replaced a lot of user's units.

That said, I am curious of the defective unit rate?
How many of you have had to send one in, had one fail, or had one that was otherwise defective (over or under heating)?

I'm on my first and I've had it since late December, and I used it as my home desktop and portable and part-time on-the-go portable for about 3 months straight. A little dinged-up from travel, but still functioning same as day 1. Still using my first battery most of the time, too.

You can't get any idea of the defect rate by asking that question. The information will be strongly biased towards defects, since people with problems tend to seek out and post about them in forums like this. For that reason, we discourage this sort of discussion because it inevitably produces inaccurate information.

Again, with what little data we have here, doesn't sound like user error. I get THICK vapor for at least ten hits, thinner vapor for another five-ten hits, and then nothing, usually resulting in a dark or even medium brown color. (If I use a top screen which seems to make it hotter I can get it to dark brown consistently.) I rarely if ever get charred bits, never get anything really BLACK and never combust (in my current FF's anyway). You should be able to get thick, dense hits long before any abv gets particularly dark. I'm not sure why you'd get *thin* hits prior to combustion, but given the unit heat you describe and the combustion/black ABV I really think your unit has a heating coil alignment issue. Sometimes these babies have shipped with improper alignment...I think it's rare, but several of us here have experienced it, including me. (Sucks, I know, but FF will make it right, and when you get a unit that works to your liking you will be happy you exchanged it.)

@masaki just curious, what type of grind consistency are you using? (Medium, fine, super-fine?) How full do you pack the bowl? And do you firmly or loosely pack it?

I won't be using my FF for the first time until tomorrow, but the discussion of the placement of the screen has me a little concerned. When I open up my FF, there is a hard plastic (I think it's plastic) rim-like thing, and the screen is below that, and the metal plate with the holes in it is immediately below that. I am unable to tell if there is a gap between the screen and the plate. If there is, it has to be fairly slight. Is that what everyone else's that is working properly looks like?

First 3 bowls were hand ripped chunks, started with half loaded bowl then finished with a full load. Then switched over to a medium grind. Never went to a dust consistency because the results were all the same.

masaki,
I haven't opened it up, but using their cleaning directions as a guide, I've moved the screen around, and popped it out and put it back in to get a feel for how it's supposed to be (using their own cleaning tools). It sure seems like it's right there next to the plate with the holes. Not sure it that's correct or not.

TooflessGranny,
I just spoke to Shelby at FF and she said that the herb shouldn't be ground fine. She said hand tearing it is best. She assured me that the alignment of the screen and the plate in my unit is how it should be. I guess I'm just worrying for nothing! :p

She is correct....the screen lays on the steel plate with the holes, and the edges of the screen should sit just under the edges of the glass bowl. If you'd like a little more distance between plate and screen, try the Iolite Wispr screen discs as a replacement for the stock FF screen. Some of us swear by em!

Haha well I guess I've been using the FF "wrong" the whole time. The FF comes new with the screen directly on top of the metal plate. This is how shelby from FF said it's supposed to be for use? I'm confused. With the screen flat on the plate it giggles around there's a gap between it and the glass bowl. I've never used it that way. There's a small groove around the bottom of the glass bowl. This is where i assumed the screen was supposed to go. I popped the screen out with the supplied toothpick and placed it back in the bowl, locking it into the groove in a parabola shape. The groove is very small and sometimes when packing a bowl I would accidentally pushing the screen down... so I started placing it just above that tiny groove which has been working great for me.

I never get anything under the screen unless I push it out of place. Anything that does collect down there comes out with a puff of air anyways.

Are you still using a screen at the bottom, resting directly on the metal plate so fine particles don't make their way into the core? I can see how wedging a screen in there like that would make a decent seal, but perhaps the most important reason the screen is supposed to go on the plate is to prevent crumblies from falling through the holes.

I pull on mine so hard that the screen would probably be dislodged every time If I had it resting in there like that.

I found the Web Chat to be way more responsive than their email or phone!
I called last Monday and Shelby in customer Service picked up right away. Don't forget to take into account that they are in Seattle and on west coast time, so if you are on the east coast and call at 10 AM, it's only 7 in Seattle and nobody will be there yet. My broken fly just arrived there today. I hope they fix it fast and get it back to me. I miss her.

Can anyone tell me how long the FF battery charge lasts when they are idle and not being used to vape?

Also, I read in the VapeCritic's review of the FF that some folks have started using the Arizer dome screens as swappable screens in the FF. Anyone here ever try that?

has an auto shut-off feature.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. Does anyone know how long the battery can just sit, out of the charger but without being used, before losing its charge? Or does this kind of battery start discharging immediately whether it is being used or not?
