Putin is a War Criminal
A Look Into the Minds of Trump Supporters
by Nancy LeTourneau
October 14, 2016 9:44 AM

I grew up mostly in East Texas in the district that is currently represented by Louie Golmert. I also have a fascination with understanding what drives people to support Donald Trump. We’ve been fed a lot of information about that and I’m not always sure that it gets to the root of the problem. So you can imagine that I was interested in reading a column by Joe Lansdale (who lives in Nacogdoches, about 70 miles south of where I grew up) in the Texas Observer titled: “Why My East Texas Neighbors Are Voting for Trump.”

Lansdale begins by saying that these folks are not “stupid rednecks” – as many non-Trump supporters believe. He says that many of them make good money and are well educated.

Thing is, the support of Trump in Texas — and I speak specifically of my region, East Texas — goes beyond the smart and the not so smart, the educated and the uneducated. It is more a result of what I like to call the happily stupid; the ones who hold stupid views by choice, not due to lack of intelligence, but due to a kind of tribalism. Facts that interfere with their version of the world are there to be ignored. It’s like putting a hat on a pig and insisting the porker is your Uncle Frank, contrary to all other evidence.

Trump has provided a dark, dank hole into which these folks can dump whatever it is they’re mad about. Even contradictory views, since Trump frequently changes viewpoint in midsentence, can happily nest there, swelling and breeding like poison fungus.

When it comes to what these people are mad about, here’s is how Lansdale describes it:

Republicans since the ’60s have run elections on hatred of the outsider, imagined hordes of freeloaders, or merely those who are different, working up fears of roving gangs of negro youth prowling the streets in search of mischief, along with invading Mexicans who want nothing more than to drive drunk and unlicensed and run over innocent white children. Another fear that seems rampant is women wanting to have a say over their own reproductive organs, and you might as well throw in negativity toward transgender folks who would like to use public restrooms: Hard-shell Republicans prefer they go pee-less.

It’s a jungle out there. At least, to hear the Republicans tell it. But what it’s really about, in earthier conservative circles, is a chance for people to feel important, to think they are standing on the lines of freedom, fighting back the zombie hordes. What drives these folks is fear; but for many, it’s a delicious fear.

It’s a chance for the bored and disappointed to play army, a way to justify having tons of guns and ammunition. They feel that if not for their vigilance, dead-eye aim, and concealment due to camouflaged pants and a Duck Dynasty cap, we would be standing on the edge of a precipice looking into the bowels of hell.

The reason that makes sense to me is because it ties together the racial, economic and cultural fears that Republicans have been fueling and on which Trump has capitalized. As Lansdale pointed out in the previous quote, any data that goes against those fears is merely dismissed. For these folks, the election of Hillary Clinton would mean falling off that precipice and descending into the bowels of hell.

What happens to these voters when their champion loses? That has become the question of the hour. As someone who actually believes in the rather antiquated notion of “personal responsibility,” it seems clear to me that it is largely up to them. The words President Obama said to our foreign adversaries in his first inaugural address fit very well because they capture how reconciliation is a two-way street.

Hillary Clinton Extends Her Battleground Map Lead

battleground_a5a4a3bf0348ba3c9ac8a8ece15c41e0.nbcnews-ux-2880-1000.png

After one of the craziest weeks we can remember in the 2016 race -- the Access Hollywood audio of Trump, WikiLeaks, the nasty debate in St. Louis, the accusers against Bill Clinton, the accusers against Donald Trump, and plenty of new polls -- here's where the NBC battleground map stands. Hillary Clinton has expanded her lead and now has 287 electoral votes in her column, which is more than the 270 needed to win the White House. Trump has 157 electoral votes in his column, which is down more than 30 for him from last week. And we have 94 electoral votes in Tossup. Last week, our map was Clinton 268, Trump 190, and 80 in Tossup.

Likely Dem: CA, CT, DC, DE, HI, IL, MD, MA, NJ, NY, OR, RI, VT, WA (182 electoral votes)

Lean Dem: CO, ME (3 EVs), MI, MN, NH, NM, NC, PA, VA, WI (105)

Tossup: AZ, GA, FL, IA, ME (1EV), NE (1 EV), NV, OH, UT (94)

Lean GOP: AK, IN, KS, MO, MT, ND, SC, SD, TX (85)

Likely GOP: AL, AR, ID, KY, LA, MS, NE (4 EVs), OK, TN, WV, WY (72)

Trump’s Sexism Demeans Men
by Nancy LeTourneau
October 14, 2016 10:49 AM

Jon Passantino retrieved a fascinating discussion Donald Trump, Jr. had in a March 2013 episode of The Opie and Anthony Show. It begins with the participants talking about whether women should be allowed in all-male golf clubs and then slips into them commenting on workplace sexual harassment.

“If you have a guys’ place you have a guys’ place,” Trump Jr., the candidate’s eldest son and executive vice president at the Trump Organization, said, describing himself as a “guy’s guy.”

A host interjected that women “complain, ‘it’s harassment’ — that’s why we hate having them around. They stop us from doing what we want to do.”

“I’m of that mindset — and I’ll get into trouble, I’m sure I’ll get myself in trouble one of these days,” Trump began, “if you can’t handle some of the basic stuff that’s become a problem in the workforce today, then you don’t belong in the workforce. Like, you should go maybe teach kindergarten. I think it’s a respectable position.

It reminded me of something his father tweeted about the same time.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

26,000 unreported sexual assults in the military-only 238 convictions. What did these geniuses expect when they put men & women together?

Those comments not only objectify women and assume that it’s still a man’s world, they are terribly demeaning to men. Both Trump’s assume that all men are as depraved as they are when it comes to their treatment of women.

Yesterday in her magnificent speech, Michelle Obama spent a lot of her time talking directly to women about Donald Trump and his candidacy. But she also spoke about what it means to men.

And how is this affecting men and boys in this country? Because I can tell you that the men in my life do not talk about women like this. And I know that my family is not unusual. And to dismiss this as everyday locker-room talk is an insult to decent men everywhere.

The men that you and I know don’t treat women this way. They are loving fathers who are sickened by the thought of their daughters being exposed to this kind of vicious language about women. They are husbands and brothers and sons who don’t tolerate women being treated and demeaned and disrespected. And like us, these men are worried about the impact this election is having on our boys who are looking for role models of what it means to be a man…

Because let’s be very clear: Strong men — men who are truly role models — don’t need to put down women to make themselves feel powerful. People who are truly strong lift others up. People who are truly powerful bring others together.

That is precisely why Michelle’s remarks yesterday were such an antidote to the ugliness we are seeing in the Trump campaign. She not only touched women’s hearts and said it was OK to feel the hurt. She demonstrated what it means to stand up to it all and say, “No…this is NOT normal.” And she reminded us all how authentically strong men behave.

And here we come back, once again, to the fact that our Presidential election is a choice between a power hungry congenital liar and your narcissistic drunk Uncle Pervy.

The only think this election has going for it is the entertainment value. Can't wait to read the paper over the next four years....whoever wins. sigh

Was just was listening to Obama's speech in Cleveland. He's good. He's REALLY good.

He always has been. Oratory is the only thing that got him out of Chicago and put him on the national map.

From today's podesta leak, killary the conqueror was quoted as telling her audience in 2013:

"I said, by that argument, you know, the United States should claim all of the Pacific. We liberated it, we defended it. We have as much claim to all of the Pacific. And we could call it the American Sea, and it could go from the West Coast of California all the way to the Philippines"

“Washington should start by expressing its willingness to work with regional allies like Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar to organize, train and arm Syrian rebel forces. Arming the Syrian rebels and using Western air power to ground Syrian helicopters and airplanes is a low-cost high payoff approach.”

Agreed. It's just weird that his wife is just as good if not better than him. I've never seen a husband/wife team like this before.
In eight years of president O's administration, I have found little to fault him with policy-wise, and the First Lady, MO, has always been 1st class. I've met her personally and she is genuinely genuine. Unable to explain my connection, here, to BHO, Barack, the same... 1st class. There is just so much more to know that most will never know is all I can say... a much bigger picture, a much farther horizon.

You.. can be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes! You can be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes! You say.. "Steve.. how can I be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes?" First.. get a million dollars. Now.. you say, "Steve.. what do I say to the tax man when he comes to my door and says, 'You.. have neverpaid taxes'?" Two simple words. Two simple words in the English language: "I forgot!" How many times do we let ourselves get into terrible situations because we don't say "I forgot"? Let's say you're on trial for armed robbery. You say to the judge, "I forgot armed robbery was illegal." Let's suppose he says back to you, "You have committed a foul crime. you have stolen hundreds and thousands of dollars from people at random, and you say, 'I forgot'?" Two simple words: Excuuuuuse me!!"

Putin is a War Criminal
Quick Takes: Why the Alt-Right Loves “Unshackled” Trump
by Nancy LeTourneau
October 13, 2016 5:19 PM

* Josh Marshall writes this about Trump’s speech in West Palm Beach, FL today:

Is it desperation? The themes and instincts of the anti-Semitic radicals and extremists his campaign stews in? A “global conspiracy” of the political elites, international finance and the media who have “robbed our working class, stripped our country of its wealth and put the money in the pockets of a handful of large corporations and political entities.”

Whatever Trump is thinking or means, the white nationalists and neo-Nazis he’s activated will hear his speech with glee because he’s channeling text book anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, with all the code words and emotional tenor. I genuinely don’t know how much of this he even understands or cares about. But his rage and anger is in tune with these movements. And he’ll cast about for the most coherent and resonant storyline that captures it. It doesn’t matter what he thinks. It matters what he does.

* Here’s my quick take on all that:
Nancy LeTourneau @Smartypants60

For years now I’ve been saying that white patriarchy is like a beast lashing out in its death throes. That description fits Trump perfectly.

* The Committee to Protect Journalists has issued a statement saying that Trump is a threat to press freedom.

Since the beginning of his candidacy, Trump has insulted and vilified the press and has made his opposition to the media a centerpiece of his campaign. Trump has routinely labeled the press as “dishonest” and “scum” and singled out individual news organizations and journalists.

He has mocked a disabled New York Times journalist and called an ABC News reporter a “sleaze” in a press conference. He expelled Univision anchor Jorge Ramos from a campaign press conference because he asked an “impertinent” question, and has publicly demeaned other journalists.

Trump has refused to condemn attacks on journalists by his supporters. His campaign has also systematically denied press credentials to outlets that have covered him critically, including The Washington Post, BuzzFeed, Politico, The Huffington Post, The Daily Beast, Univision, and The Des Moines Register.

Throughout his campaign, Trump has routinely made vague proposals to limit basic elements of press and internet freedom. At a rally in February, Trump declared that if elected president he would “open up our libel laws so when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money.” In September, Trump tweeted, “My lawyers want to sue the failing @nytimes so badly for irresponsible intent. I said no (for now), but they are watching. Really disgusting.”

* Have you noticed that Trump’s BFF Chris Christie has been MIA lately? Perhaps this has something to do with that:

A judge has found probable cause for a complaint of official misconduct against Gov. Chris Christie related to the George Washington Bridge lane closures.

Judge Roy McGeady issued the ruling Thursday. The case now goes to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, which will decide whether to bring the issue to a grand jury for possible indictment.

* A few days ago Mark Cuban tweeted this:
https://twitter.com/mcuban
Mark Cuban @mcuban

Every single @realDonaldTrump hotel and golf course is toast. Done. Over. Bernie Madoff now has a better brand.

Michelle Celarier writes that if Trump’s new DC hotel is any indication, Cuban is right.

The 263-room five-star hotel in the historic Old Post Office building opened last month. But even with a prime location near the White House, swanky interiors, and aggressive promotion by the candidate himself, empty rooms have forced the hotel to reduce rates during a peak season. At the same time, the hotel has lost two planned restaurants, Hispanic employees are making claims of discrimination, and protesters are gearing up to do whatever they can to cause trouble for the hotel.

* According to Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook, 2016 voter turnout may be the biggest in history. Here is some of the data he shared:

1. 2.8m requested vote-by-mail ballots in state [Florida] compared with 2.1 million in 2012

2. The number of Hispanics in N.C. requesting absentee ballots is up 33%, number of Asians seeking them is up 45%

3. More than 1m absentee ballots received in Ohio

* Finally, today Bob Dylan was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature. President Obama told a great story about him performing at the White House.

Here’s what I love about Dylan: He was exactly as you’d expect he would be… He came in and played ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’.’ A beautiful rendition. The guy is so steeped in this stuff that he can just come up with some new arrangement, and the song sounds completely different. Finishes the song, steps off the stage—I’m sitting right in the front row—comes up, shakes my hand, sort of tips his head, gives me just a little grin, and then leaves. And that was it—then he left. That was our only interaction with him. And I thought: That’s how you want Bob Dylan, right? You don’t want him to be all cheesin’ and grinnin’ with you. You want him to be a little skeptical about the whole enterprise. So that was a real treat.

Trump keeps digging the hole deeper that he's in. The last couple of days he's been degrading the appearance of the women that have been accusing him of inappropriate behavior. Like would I try to get some of that? Implying that they are too unattractive for him to want to kiss or touch them in the pussy. He doesn't realize how quilty he looks by normal standards. Even if some of these women are liars.

He is in full meltdown mode. I can't believe Paul Ryan. He discredits Trump but says he will be voting for him. The republicans are going to lose big time and only can hold themselves to blame. They will probably blame the evil press. Trump needs to do himself and those around him a favor and shut up. He is only making matters worse. The floodgates are open.

Although I was terribly surprised and disheartened by apparent truth of Bill Cosby, Donald Trump doesn't surprise or disappoint me at all. We have all known who Donald Trump was since the 80s. We didn't want to believe that was/is who Cosby is...
