Silicone Carbide/Titanium hybrid nails

Hi all! I may be picking up a SIC Halo depending on the results of a pending purchase...

I did read through the thread, but since I'm not 100% sure, please help me out if you can. The language on D-Nails website implies that the this nail is only compatible with "their" flat coil heater. I have an Auber RDK-300, but I don't have a flat coil so do need to buy something regardless.

I figure I could just buy the flat coil from Auber, but want to make sure. Do you really need to buy D-Nails coil, or can I buy Aubers? (I believe they already use the same cable pin layout so, I'm assuming that is not an issue).

A SiC halo is not likely to break from an off-brand coil. That is a problem for sapphire and quartz which are much more fragile. You will have no problem with any coil on the SiC halo, that is a general comment which really only applies to the other halos :)

Nice. Thanks for the thorough reply. Sounds like I can go either way, but if I want to maintain the widest compatibility (and minimize potential problems), then I should consider D-Nail's coil.

It's a little expensive but it's a pretty nice coil; worth the money. I should hook up mine to my RDK-300 (I have an extended life that's unused)

Ever since the SiC Liger inserts got discontinued, I've been mulling over the concept of a domed nail with a SiC head. Would it sell?

On one hand I don't think a lot of people want something like that, but I like how domed nails affect the airflow of downstem tubes as well getting to play with more pieces of pretty glass.

...hello everyone...
On the subject of d-nail coils,..a good friend gave me an encased 16mm awhile ago....im wondering how it would fare on the NewVape flower pot....

If it fits properly (I'm sure if the newvape takes a 16mm coil it should) then you should have no trouble at all bro :)

How long should I wait after shutting off the controller until I clean my SIC dish?

I try to wait but several times the qtip with ISO sizzled and boiled because the dish was still hot.

Will this destroy the dish?

I've also dropped the dish twice in the same day on a cement floor, with no apparent problems.

I try to be careful, but hey it's dabbing, lol.

SiC is a Ceramic so isn't it porous? so I would imagine the water + ISO would / could go into the dish?

Please correct me if I am wrong; haven't used SiC ... will soon

I've been using ISO on a qtip, followed by water on a qtip. I find a thin skim of leftovers after a rosin dab at low temps. ISO picks it up very well though.

I think SIC dishes are somewhat porous. My home squeezed rosin melts and boils, but doesn't run or pool.

How much do concentrates (or solvents) actually sink in? Idk. But I havnt noticed any off tastes from ISO, maybe the heat burns it off before I dab.

Indeed they are semi-porous. Anyway I've also heard of people using a torch or just turning up the heat to clean SiC... That would work for you? crank it up to 800 and leave it for 30 minutes and then blow off the residue that flaked off

I have a tendency to do a dab, shut it off, and take off. My rig is not in my house, but in an out building mancave dealio.

But I haven't tried running up the heat yet. I've only had it a couple weeks. And the qtip thing seems pretty easy.

I'm just afraid of thermal shock by cleaning it too soon, before it's cooled down. I'm loving it and would hate to crack it, and have to wait on another.

I totally understand not wanting to crack it. It's why I haven't been to aggressive at cleaning the Quartz (Borosilicate?) inserts from my Banger. I should just put it in an Ultrasonic Cleaner

I'm more down to cranking it up to 800f and letting it smoke everything off is longer than torching it too.

But you should be able to just hit a torch on it and clean up the residue and skip the iso trip

As to thermo shock to a SIC dish, I've found some info from dnail's web site that says SIC can take a temperature change up to 700 degrees F. So I must not being too hard on my dish cleaning while still warm/ kind of hot.

In dnail's cleaning nails section, they also mention swabbing nails with qtips between uses.

  • Known for its good thermal shock resistance, able to handle a temperature change of 700°F.
I think they are referring to it's able to handle a jump in temp of 700degree's without much fear of thermal shock. It's been used for re-entry on our Spaceship so it should be able to handle 700 degree's. According to that page it melts down to Quartz and CO2 at 5k f (4950f)

So I think 800 should be fine to clean at; i have seen people dab at 900+ on youtube but I can't comment on it because I like my lung function. The coughing fits would make me pass out for sure

Dry qtip while your dish is at dabbing temp, as my bro @SamuraiSam points out above. Every now and then, you might want to take your coil off the SiC halo and torch the SiC part until it comes up perfectly clean. Do not use ISO on SiC, if anything is left on that SiC from your dabs, it is not shit that you want to reclaim - it'll be profoundly overcooked because SiC is such an efficient way of getting heat into your errl. I never reclaim off my dishes, only from cooler parts of the vapor path such as my rig and perhaps the nail base.

Man am I glad you got SiC over sapphire lol, glad to hear it survived those drops and is still serving you well bro :D

The reason that your rosin melts and boils rather than running a pooling like on quartz is because SiC is a better heat conductor. If it were porous or not, it would still melt and boil rapidly and not pool because it is just so much more efficient at transferring the heat into your dab than quartz ;)

Any residual ISO would certainly boil off a nail at dabbing temp very quickly, no doubt before you apply your dab as you suggest.

I can confirm that the d-nail guys in early testing of SiC left SiC dishes being torched IIRC by propane torches until the torches ran out of gas without damage. You are not going to damage SiC with thermal shock and you can reliably torch the hell out of it to clean. As I said above, this is the best way to clean other than qtipping after each hit like with any other halo.

You should not at all worry about using a butane torch on SiC. It is not going to damage it.

Just for those who might be interested (myself included ;)) vapefiend has these in stock, rare and expensive but I won't be surprised if they are worth every penny for the dab cannasuer :D

https://vapefiend.co.uk/d-nail-sapphire-dish

SiC halo including slim base too!!

https://vapefiend.co.uk/d-nailr-sic-halotm-dish

The more I look at the share your dab thread and this thread too amongst others the more I long for a enail setup up, drop the Quartz bangers (which work but are tricky to master and wasteful) and torch and get a neat setup like this one.

https://vapefiend.co.uk/dabbie-dab-station-quartz-hybrid-home-e-nail

Swap out the hybrid nail and perhaps the carb cap and I'd be laughing :D

I can honestly tell you I've been more than pleased with my similar set up. And before my purchase I've never once tried enails. And I was somewhat turned off with torch dabs, due to the harshness of the hits.

But dabbing has become very pleasurable for me now. The flavors are more intense, the buzz clean and clear, and with legs. I just wish wax pens delivered half the preformance. I used to like my wax pen, now I can't remember why, lol.

It's the same reason my Linx Hypnos Zero sits in it's box. It's a bit harsh; tricky and overall not as pleasurable as dropping a piece of shatter in the halo dish and capping it and off you go.

Clouds basically based on the size of your hit (and draw rate but it's restricted so it feels like you can chug chug on your pipe ) eh it just works. Like it should.

I've had my Halo now for the 2nd day; heater coil isn't even in my banger any longer. I just need to tune my D-Nail Flat coil as I would much prefer to use that on this SiC dish.

Glad to hear your enjoying your dabbing tech @shredder what sort of setup do you have? Don't think the dabbie dab station from vapefiend is a bad setup in its entirety but I'd be really keen to switch out that hybrid nail for a the SiC straight off the bat, partly for flavour but the hybrid Quartz dish looks pretty small to dab on where as the SiC is a much larger surface area to work on ;)

Sapphire is a step to far tho and NO warranty :uhoh:.

I bought my PID controller from thick ass glass. ($159) The sic nail, heater and carb cap came from dnail. ($300)

I priced the entire set up from dnail and it was something like $850. Without glass.

I paid less than $600 and that also included a $90 water pipe, and a handful of adapters, carbs and such.

So still pricey, but I'm getting dnail performance, at a slightly lower price than a total dnail set up, and I'm happier than shit with what I have now.

I should reassure anybody with this concern about sapphire that I have been using my sapphire halo for several years without breakage. The only sapphire that I ever had break was due to a failure of another component in the rig it was sitting on.

In short, I have not ever broken sapphire. I am clumsy too!

If you are especially likely to drop your halo though (some conditions relating to motor skills etc may be relevant), SiC is definitely a better idea. Also if you wanna use a torch ever, or just for cost reasons obviously!

Oh gosh i managed to break my d-nail sick Halo. Runned it on third party base and coil. It was torching time when i deposited it on the metal piece to support the operation, it shattered in two perfectly broken pieces.

This thing was supposed to be very robust.

You can see it there:
