I produce my shatter with my own proprietary custom heat purge rig, no vac required. I use isopropyl and ethanol as my solvents though, not butane. I have not ever used butane lol

Thanks for the kind words and likes on my latest run too everyone, I'm tempted to hold off on dabbing any of that latest shatter until my SiC dish gets here from dnail lol, it is just too tasty to sacrifice to even quartz.

I checked out DSW and am now following him Really good stuff! I'm gonna have to try that 10 second sift!

I have been seeing some really nice dry sift/ice water extraction (and just some really potent bud) put in Rosin Tea Bag Filters and pressed into some beautiful oil. I think this is my next endeavor after I run out of butane and have enough money for some sifting screens or bags, ice water bubble hash machine (or whatever is best), heat press, etc. If I really like the solventless route and the rosin I may really have to save up for some nicer pressure equipment.

Solventless extraction and low temp high pressure is where I want to be in the next 6 months if possible. I've had fun with solvents for the past couple of years, but I think it is time to try something new. For a while now I have been thinking about spending $2500 on an AI vac oven and new vacuum pump, but now I think I will use that $2500 (or however much) to invest in some nice solventless extraction equipment to attempt to make 99% heads and some amazing Rosin.

Okay so I needed to move a small plant into a bigger tent, but the bigger tent had a plant finishing in flower. The flowering plant was done and ready for harvest, and since I wanted to get the small plant in there, I forgot to check the soil of the flowering plant (which was going to be used for a fresh frozen bho run). I chopped down the flowering plant before I let the soil dry out (about 2 days too early) so there was quite a bit of water left in the plant material. I didn't really notice the excessive amount of water until I started packing the tubes and a little water was running out of the bottom I should have stopped right there knowing that too wet of material (even if frozen) does not process well with butane (at least I think I remember reading that somewhere).

Anyways, I froze the material for 48 hours at -5F and then attempted to blast it. Here is what happened. The butane was not really traveling through the tube. After pressing the butane can on and off on the tube for at least 10 minutes, a tiny bit of yellow goop started to form at the end of the tube. I could shake the tube and a little would fall off on the glass dish. But it was mostly turning to ice at the end of the tube. Like hanging icicles of yellow/white oil was forming at the end of the tube. I even let one tube thaw out completely and attempted to blast it just to make sure it wasn't too cold (I knew it wasn't but I just wanted to make sure the same thing happened with a thawed tube, and yep, the same thing happened).

After fighting this for about an hour I gave up and brought the small blob of oil inside to vac purge.

I unpacked the tubes and let the bud air out on a cookie sheet until it no longer smelled like butane. I took one of the buds and pressed it in a paper towel and there was so much water. It was crazy. So I brought it inside and set it on a reptile heating pad to help dry the bud (I honestly didn't know what to do at this point, but I didn't want to toss it because I knew there was stuff still left on it). I let it dry for 12 hours and then repacked the tubes. I did not refreeze them since at this point I figured even if I reblast it and it turns out horrible and tastes awful then I can just make some pills or edibles with it. So I was just kind of over it all lol. No worries

Anyways, the second run turned out amazing.

Here is a pic of the first batch (crappy oil) on the left and the second batch (good oil) on the right. I'm sure you could tell haha

The first crappy batch finished purging in just 24 hours with 2 flips. It weighed out to about 2g. It has a shatter like consistency but is very cloudy and dark. It tastes horrible. Tastes like I hit a blunt The room smelled really bad for a long time after. It was a decent size dab too, but the amount of vapor I blew out was tiny. I knew something went wrong, so I checked out the nail and I noticed some black ash left from just that one hit. It didn't fully melt. It is maybe like a 1/2 melt, if that. This will be used in a batch of edibles

The second good batch of shatter has sort of a flora taste so it's a little strange but not bad at all. Pretty strong too. I actually kind of like it

Why does wet plant material not work well with butane (even if the material is frozen)?

Does the moisture freeze over the trichomes in the freezer and when the butane touches it, causing mostly only chlorophyll, plant fats, lipids, waxes, etc to come out the end of the tube at the beginning before the end froze over? (That is the only thing I could think of that made reasonable sense as to why my dab tasted like a blunt and did not fully melt/left black ash).

If the 2g of poo oil is really mostly chlorophyll, plant fats, lipids, waxes, etc then is my 6g of good oil kind of dewaxed/winterized? Did I somehow just accidentally come up with a crappy dewax/winterization method?

I could offer a few educated guesses when I am not so vaked and not rushing to meet other writing deadlines, but basically water and butane don't seem to be friends for our purposes. You are right to mention this. As well did you freeze the material inside the tube in preparation for blasting? You may have had the tube packed too tight, remembering that when the moisture freezes up, it will occupy more space in the tube, just like freezing a bottle of water - you gotta fill it up less.

You may have had so much ice content in there that it could have impeded the flow of the tane. A few other possibilities spring to mind but I have been experimenting with those cluster bomb gemstones and a sapphire dish and it has really impaired my ability to express any sophisticated explanation clearly and legibly. lol

I would check out the buds that the poo oil came off of man, sounds like they may potentially have actives left there If not, winterize that poo oil, get the fats and waxes out and see if you don't get something lovely. It'll only take 3 fluid oz of ethanol per 2-3g of poo oil to winterize with

By the way, D-nail have their rosin presses coming soon, that looks like it's gonna deliver on the high pressure low temp and very even heat distribution requirements (SiC plates have way better heat distribution than ti or other metals!). They are also designed to press weight! Not a nug at a time lol

From what i saw before I think it's a modified t-shirt press with 2-sided heating. Main upside of getting it from D-Nail will be that it's been tested and optimized for making rosin out of the box and maybe they'll be able to support it with a warranty.

How's the pain relief/body high?

Ha! I've not been locked to the couch quite as much as you may think but to be honest I've been being fairly modest with the size of my dabs. If only money was no object eh . . .

So anyway, it's very early days of testing this stuff out but so far I would say that it imparts a very soothing and calming effect which for me has started out like a solid lump of fuzz between my ears which then proceeds to emanate out to my entire body. It is a relaxing & very reassuring feeling which in my opinion could almost feel like the beginnings of a mild dose of some form of general anesthetic

I personally think it also provides great anti-inflammatory relief.

It has an odd but not unpleasant taste which is reminiscent of something I can't quite put my finger on right now . . . . sorry.

Well, early impressions are good, so it definitely gets a thumbs up from me
It's just a shame it is so expensive.

And no worries man, I too am super busy in the garden and making sure my latest harvest of Blueberry Dream is cured properly (this is merely a Homemade cut of Blue Dream, but the Blueberry Profile is much more dominant than the Super Silver Haze)

Curing Cannabis in Colorado can be a tricky challenge due to the altitude and super dry air.
This harvest smells of fresh baked Blueberry Muffins with a hint of Grapefruit..sooo stoked to sieve this into some great tasting Hash.

It may seem that I'm hating on BHO, but I am not... I simply want everyone I care about know, that true bliss of the Cannabis plant lies within unadulterated Glandular Heads, Solvents are relatively new in this culture, and what I'm seeing is unscrupulous profiteering from companies.
While traditional sieving techniques have been around for thousands of years.

Also; many of my acquaintances are now looking to sell their BHO gear,like CLS, Ovens etc...

I fully support anyone looking to switch to the Solventless movement.

The non-polar properties of Butane embodies a hygroscopic character, meaning that the raw BHO has the propensity and the desire to pull water into the solution, this is why I eliminated water in my purging process when I was cranking out BHO Runs.

I Use sand as opposed to water for my "Heat Bath"
-I put the sand in a Deep Dish Griddle,then my chamber gets nestled into the sand, then more sand is added around the base of the Chamber.

Exactly!! When we freeze fresh plant material, there is a great deal of water inside the plant matter (even more so with chopping while extremely wet)
When water freezes, it expands causing the cell walls in the leaf to rupture releasing chlorophyll,plant waxes and lipids.

This is a topic I got in many debates over....

I do not like freezing my material period. Whether solvent or water ....
Wait until the material is dry to the touch, and she is primed for solvent extraction.

I did however freeze my Butane.

I take the same approach with my Bubble, however I like to cure the material prior to extraction.

Before the cure, THC is still in its acidic form, locked into its carboxyl group (THC-A) which creates hard, shatter like resin.

Here is some bubble that was processed while fresh, but not wet, nor frozen.







I called that batch "Bubble GlHash " as she literally was like glass, super shardy, but the high was more localized to the Head, , intense heady high that was short lived.

I think you're right man, all the "crap" was released on the first blast, the second slab looks extremely stable.. I'm guessing she is very brittle?

All completely dabbable, and left just a tad of residuals on the nail, which is simply the wax membrane that encase the Trichome and the cuticle where the gland meets the stalk.

This is it apparently. I'm hoping for something smaller (cheaper) in the future. $300 is what people are saying. Not that pricey I guess but still a bit big for the average home presser, maybe that's just me.

I've been getting 19-22% yields with a hair straightener so unless this thing just straight sucks yield shouldn't be an issue.
