Yeah, depending on how much you squish the buds... much earlier I posted about the squished flakes being hard to grind and stiff. I went back and did a re-press and got more oil out of them. I find it's done when they turn kinda golden light light brown, they will snap in half easily. Even then they still produce some vapor tastes like ABV but not as strongly. All I know is it works, makes solventless oil, and it's fun as fuck to watch it vape.Has anyone else tried to Vape or comsume the pressed buds?
Can't believe this is working so well for you. Seems so simple. The consistency is not what I would expect at all. What iron did you use for this?My friend made some out of the strain lavender today. 10% return off 2 grams. It is the single most terpy extract I've ever had. If this wasn't heat pressed, I'd have assumed it had chemicals in it the flavor is so strong!
UNREAL.
EDIT:
Picture time. This came from 2g of bud lol... He got a lot of plant matter in it for this method, but its still insignificant. It dabs wicked clean. The flavor is INSANE. I really feel like I'm drinking lavender essential oil or something. We are already thinking of ways to scale this up because we like it so much. I can not stress the terps enough. Its almost too much for me personally with this strain. It makes me actually feel like I'm drooling. I am trying hard to resist the urge to go on a buying spree and press all the buds.
I used a 1.75" digital one. I don't think digital controls the heat any better (20° increments) but it at least gives you a rough idea of the actual temperature. With analog, unless a temperature range (max and min) is specified, you're just playing a guessing game with the temp adjustment.
Easier said then done, my IR gun doesn't like the reflective surface of my wax iron. I don't know how reflective the straight irons are. I need to find a dull surface that can withstand the heat to get an idea of the actual temperature range of these things.I personally would measure the temps myself no matter analog or digital read out of some arbitrary setting.
2 inch ceramic Remington with a digital display is what I'm using. It says 320f on the display but I'm not sure how accurate it is. Also, like I mentioned earlier, I lay a flat piece of thin silicone mat (rated up to 500f, advertised as a rest for glass/oil pad) on the bottom ceramic element so the parchment paper doesn't slip around and crumple up when I press down. I press down on it pretty heavy, I have it set up on my floor so that I can shift some of my weight onto it for extra pressure. I am not sure how much the silicone mat affects the heat output of the bottom ceramic it's on, I do know that when I remove the parchment paper and pull the silicone out and feel it that it's quite warm. If I had any flower left I'd do a quick video showing how long I press, it's honestly not more than like 2 seconds per press. I would rather press the squished but a second time than try to get everything out the first go. Like @Bouldorado said the longer I press the darker the oil ends up... I also mentioned some pages back when I first started that the rosin kinda melted into the parchment paper... heat was too high because it stopped happening once I went down to 320.Which irons are people using ?.... the flat 1", 1-3/4", 2" ? would the widest work better ? and finally... would the digital allow an accurate temp control for our new found use ?
TIA
Perhaps a thermocouple? Should be thin enough to fit inside but I'm not sure what would happen to one if it got squished with the same pressure we're using. You want to use around .2-.25g buds, DS used a .3g piece that came out nicely some pages back. I've only tried it with a few different strains, all top shelf from a dispensary. I think quality in = quality out applies since we're squishing the resin out. I think 10-15% returns are good, anything above 15% is awesome. That's pretty close to the yields when you compare it to other solventless processes, especially considering how well it vaporizes and how you can scale it down to pressing 1 dab at a time. I couldn't imagine how much dry material I'd need to make dry sift or bubble hash that melts similarly.Easier said then done, my IR gun doesn't like the reflective surface of my wax iron. I don't know how reflective the straight irons are. I need to find a dull surface that can withstand the heat to get an idea of the actual temperature range of these things.
Hopefully tonight will be the night I get to test this out, unfortunately I haven't been able to procure any really high quality buds.
I wouldnt mind seeing some pictures of the strains that are getting good results.
My hair straightner is on the way !
OG on deck
Dropped temperature and changed a bit with pressures and it's getting better. Dirty but I'm not hitting this on a nail so I don't care about the particulate. This is kind of addicting, kinda like making hash oil but without the dangers
I'm using a ceramic 2 inch hair straightener, 320 degrees. About .25g size buds between parchment paper, press as hard as I can for 2 seconds. I have this thin silicone mat thing I lay on one side of the iron so that nothing slips when I press down. Repeat again to get a second bit. Let it cool and using a safety pin or something you can flick the particulates off before collecting the oil, but if you did it right you won't get much.
@darkrom, I know, I tried it again and it came out a bit better
Only problem with a shirt (silk screen) press is it's only one side heat....
