Steely Dan took their name from a metal dildo in William Burroughs's book, Naked Lunch.

I had to take some training in Atlanta in the early 90's. The company paid for it so I went down a couple days early to play around. On the radio they announced the Steely Dan comeback tour concert that night at the Omni! I'd been a fan since the mid-70's and had no idea they were touring of all things. Great show, and I've seem them several times after that, but no more. :(

Hugh Hefner, the iconic founder of Playboy magazine, died at his home, the Playboy Mansion, of natural causes at age 91, Playboy Enterprisessaid in a statement on Wednesday.

Playboy magazine was founded more than 60 years ago to create a niche upscale men's magazine, combining images of nude women with in-depth articles and interviews.

"My father lived an exceptional and impactful life as a media and cultural pioneer and a leading voice behind some of the most significant social and cultural movements of our time in advocating free speech, civil rights and sexual freedom," Cooper Hefner, Playboy Enterprises' chief creative officer and Hugh's son, said in the statement.


"He defined a lifestyle and ethos that lie at the heart of the Playboy brand, one of the most recognizable and enduring in history," the younger Hefner said.

While the magazine managed to both inspire and ride the "sexual revolution" of the 1960s and 70s, in recent years it has struggled in the face of tough competition from the availability of free pornography online.

Hugh Hefner was an early financial contributor to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Hef gave NORMAL $5,000 in the early years of the organization.

In the book “High in America,” Hefner told the author: “Smoking "weed" helped put me in touch with the realm of the senses. I discovered a whole other dimension to sex.”

In “The Playboy Philosophy,” a mix of libertarian arguments that Mr. Hefner wrote in 25 installments starting in 1962, his message was simple: Society was to blame.
His causes —
abortion rights
decriminalization of marijuana
the repeal of 19th-century sex laws — were daring at the time. Ten years later, they would be unexceptional.

RIP Charles Bradley . It's been about a week since he passed , but I'm still feeling it . He didn't release his first album until age 63 (with the exception of a handful of singles a little earlier ), but he quickly became a force to recon with in the funk / soul revival . I will certainly miss him :cry:

Wow! That really bums me out!! I love Tom Petty, he had just gotten off tour it says. He was a smoker since a teenager. He probably had a heart attack. It says cardiac arrest but I mean the cause. I hope it wasn't drugs.

It will be a month before we hear anything regarding forensics. Unless folks speak up about anything that would attribute to his death like drug use or any health issues that they knew about.
All the Traveling Wilburys are dying off.

"CBS News posted that Petty’s death was confirmed but TMZ reported that its sources are claiming that Petty is still clinging to life. TMZ said the family of Petty had a do not resuscitate order and did not expect him to live throughout the day."




1:35 PM PT -- Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom's hospital room. We're told the family has a do not resuscitate order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live throughout the day, but he's still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer's death is inaccurate -- the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. handled the emergency.

Hi Vito - and more importantly, he was apparently a very wonderful and kind person who was dearly loved by many in Hollywood.

We should all be lucky enough to be remembered that way.

I saw someone else post this in the comments on an article about him, it totally got me. Sorry it's a bit long.

From an NPR interview of commentator Aaron Freeman:

You want a physicist to speak at your funeral. You want the physicist to talk to your grieving family about the conservation of energy, so they will understand that your energy has not died. You want the physicist to remind your sobbing mother about the first law of thermodynamics; that no energy gets created in the universe, and none is destroyed. You want your mother to know that all your energy, every vibration, every Btu of heat, every wave of every particle that was her beloved child remains with her in this world. You want the physicist to tell your weeping father that amid energies of the cosmos, you gave as good as you got.

And at one point you’d hope that the physicist would step down from the pulpit and walk to your brokenhearted spouse there in the pew and tell him that all the photons that ever bounced off your face, all the particles whose paths were interrupted by your smile, by the touch of your hair, hundreds of trillions of particles, have raced off like children, their ways forever changed by you. And as your widow rocks in the arms of a loving family, may the physicist let her know that all the photons that bounced from you were gathered in the particle detectors that are her eyes, that those photons created within her constellations of electromagnetically charged neurons whose energy will go on forever.

And the physicist will remind the congregation of how much of all our energy is given off as heat. There may be a few fanning themselves with their programs as he says it. And he will tell them that the warmth that flowed through you in life is still here, still part of all that we are, even as we who mourn continue the heat of our own lives.
