The PD is solder free, if I remember correctly.

Sure it wasn't bud? A few pages back (yeah a PITA, I know :( ) I posted a picture of my 'PD cleaning'.... a lot of bud was in it. :p

Yep, I have the rattle, on my current unit and it happened on my previous one as well. I believe this has something to do with the LED wiring and is one of the reasons for the new design.

Well I emailed Vapenow earlier today and I got a reply about an hour or so later explaining that they were in the middle of moving inventory between warehouses. It should be shipping out in a day or so :D

Not solder free. The solder is lead free.

http://www.insultab.com/ Here's a little video loop of the process. You use a heat gun (a good hair dryer with the 'hot' setting should work-may take a little longer) to shrink the tubing around the connection from wire to 'strain relief'. It keeps the wire from bending back and forth constantly and effectively lengthens the strain relief.

Hey everyone,

We use solder, it is 97% Tin and 3% Silver. Lead-Free solder, no rosin or flux or any other bad stuff is used.

So there could be a drop of errant solder left in the electronics cavity, stuck to the wood maybe and loosened with time and use. I can see how that happens in a case or two.

And that relates to the vibration or rattle in a sort of way...

When you turn the PD over the small bit or two of solder (tin and silver only) fell through one of the two insulating channels that run top to bottom.

We use bare 20ga - tinned copper wire (RoHS of course, by Belden last I looked). One channel positive, one to ground. These wires each lead down to the lower cavity where they wrap around a stainless steel screw with washer that is sunk into the center body section, (from there, a very short distance to the jack posts where it gets wrapped through a hole in the post and soldered). The bare wire inside those two channels is held solid at the heat exchanger and at those stainless screws and can 'vibrate' when the unit is struck. Sorta like a tuning fork effect.

If a unit gets dropped, top down, onto a hard surface the 100 gram mass of that heat exchanger can slightly move the spring clip that holds it in place against the stainless steel sleeve that sits underneath. A flat bladed screw driver can be used to press the spring clip down against the heat exchanger top disk. This top disk is sandwiched between the sleeve and clip and can slide sideways either way by a fraction to allow for the expansion of that top disc under heat. If it were a perfectly tight fit it would split the wood as it expanded.

Spiral, the solder-less reference you may be thinking of is on our Workshop page, "Our 100% Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger with 72 radiating fins is unique and better than ever. Spring loaded , solder-less, 21st Century design ." The A=zap and Eterra (I believe) had a soldered / brazed joint where the top disk and tube met.

Spiral asks,"Why do these have such a tendency to burn out?"
The wire/plug/transformer story.

Trans first. It's an AC to AC transformer. 120 volts to 12... 10 to one. 10 windings to 1 winding. Induction, Watson . . . There just isn't anything that is gonna go wrong inside that black UL listed wall wart. Nothing. . . unless like DD you drop it onto concrete (?) and crack the case.

Next is cord / plug : 420Downunder is absolutely right about flex... Every time you move it you flex the wires (they are multi strand), they weaken a bit, coper is copper. But more probable and the buggaboo that gets most is the wire to plug connection (and that shrink wrap idea is so seriously good that I'm going to look into it. Thanks mate.)

There is nothing wrong with the existing transformer. Pammy and many others use them daily and have no problems and others replace them often... other brands... and those fail too... (Tom scratches his bald head and wonders why...)

I can build the unit to be as tough as nails but there will never be a cord or connection that is truely sturdy. BTW a heavier cord will add to the flex stress at the plug, so it is a trade off. I'm sure the engineers and folks at UL etc. know this.

Speaking of trade offs, the screen pore diameter is a bit snug to keep fine particles out of your mouth. Bigger holes = more crap gets past the screen. Keeping your original screens clean will make the airflow right. Alcohol (booze works better than ISO, get a bottle of rotgut and keep it for cleaning...) and agitation and a double soak and more agitation if you have let them go too far.

Glad the VapeNow story is cleared up. I talked to Nate via e-mail and he said they will need more but are not out at the moment.

Figured Maple comingh soon.

By purpledays at 2009-01-07

I grabbed three random blocks late yesterday afternoon, just couldn't resist. Spun two Figured Maple and one Figured Walnut and they are pretty. The maple is more subtle but has that holo figured look and is a nice color. The pictures show a fresh cherry to the left, but maple will stay light where cherry gets darker with age. The walnut is neat-o. Maybe that one will be the prettiest ever, but I really did just grab the one on top. Of course these are going to be available in limited supplies,

The Ash looks cool, just like my old Louisville Slugger ball bat. The P-D Slugger ? Nice grain... those will be available at the same price as the Cherry. And I think I can get those on a regular basis. A limited supply of plain maple that will be at that price too. Still holding to $150, till the new spring postal rates anyway.

First and foremost (I hate to sound redundant, but...) Tom, you rock  ! It is wonderful to see people in any industry that don't feel the need to hide trade secrets. IMO, in addition to it being an injustice to the consumers who are striving to make informed decisions and maintain their investments appropriately, hiding trade secrets inhibits progress (progress? ;) ) in the field that the designers expressed interest (at least implicitly) about expanding (screams hypocracy to me  ). On another note, the plug is UL listed (I am sure anyone can contact United Labs about failure rates, repairs, replacements, etc.), and I agree that most issues likely come from wire breakage (not transformer issues)--just my :2c: )

CTPF (carpel-tunnel phone fingers)...

Anywho, my freind e-mailed me a fairy tale which I thought some of you may appreciate (thank goodness for cut & paste :brow: ).

Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful girl named Princess Diffusaeur (we'll call her PD for short). She lived in a castle with her brother (Billy), her father (King Shakey), and the family pet (Buzz). This story begins when a suitor arrived at the castle to woo the princess. This suitor would constantly feed the princess and her brother (Billy), and would even have others bring dishes from all around. Things were good for the suitor in the castle. King Shakey would even give the suitor the finest portions of the finest crops to dress the meals he would make for PD and Billy. Even Queen E, who hasn't been seen very much in the castle recently (her time being freed up due to the new suitor now feeding Billy and PD) seemed happy. When the queen would appear in the castle (for feasts, etc.) she would always be exceptionally pristine and beautiful, and she never once mistrested the suitor or said a word of disapproval. The suitor never regretted his decision to go through the woods and join the family in the castle. Maybe some day you, too will find a princess of your own....

Hope U NJoyed.

Toke Care!

Yeah Progress, I sorta gave the blueprint there, but that's fine. Better to tell the truth and survive forever than lie to live a day or two. No secrets. (except the heat exchanger design and you will just have top take my word that it's all stainless)

Once you get the picture of the guts you can se how sturdy and simple things are. But that doesn't mean it's easy. Like the boring ops yesterday, I count between 12 and 14 different steps for each uniyt, and that's just wood on drill press time... And sitting here cutting metal tubing I say, "Go for it." if someone wants to copy... I worked 12 hours yesterday not counting computer time or lunch break... whahhh

Liked the story. :D

Oh, and we wanted to say how sorry we were for Costanza's trajedy. That sucked, but I would let it be....

Happy New Year to all :) I have not been on in a few weeks and I was shocked to see how many new posts there are!

I am going on about 45 day of only using a PD and no other smoking/vape method. I can not believe how little product I am using. Now several of my friends have the PD and our dealer (yes we all buy from the same person) is picking one up to but with mixed feelings. In short we are all using less than 1/2 of what we used to use! lol

Personally I would rather take a few small bowls and enjoy the flavor than take the second hit (especially on a bong or pipe). Know what I mean?!

Tom & Pam, Keep up the good work and please let me know if I can buy one of the figured walnut units that is logo free.

Peace :peace: ,

Don't worry, even if someone copied the design and made it 1/2 the price I know where I'd buy it from, the 2 people who put thought and care into it ,making sure it's 100% lead free and bomb proof and offering the best customer support in the industry, that alone is worth more than a few lousy $.

Hey Pokerfish,

Hope you had Happy Holidays:)

All of the figured Walnut and the the figured Maple PDs will be 'Logo' free. They won't be available until Spring. We need the opportunity to run them in to make sure these woods will make suitable PDs. Tom wanted me to mention also that he's only going to be doing a handful of the exotics a month.

Have a Happy week all :peace:

Hey Tom!

I really like what you are doing with the entire production process, keeping it healthy and doing what you love. I had no idea about how much lead is contained in all the other metals that are used for vaporizers and whatnot. I conversed with Spiral on youtube about my current smoking situation and whether the PD was right for me.

But, today, sitting in class, I had a revelation on a possible upgrade that would appeal to many people who want to have something a bit more concealed than your product but want the quality and efficiency of the PD.

My idea was to not necessarily compact it, but reform it to fit a Desktop Computer's CD-Drive case. It seemed perfect for any college student who wants a ultra-discreet, effective, efficient, healthy piece for their dorm room without getting it all "stinky". The wiring seems completely realistic seeing as that most computers have an excess of 20-300 Watts, based upon whether you built it or not.

I am currently a senior in high school and have committed to the NC State Engineering school and really would like to have this idea become a reality before leaving for school in 8ish months haha. I would be beyond appreciative if you could help me out in the creation of the CD-Drive Purple Days.

the pd is already stealthy enough as is, as long as you dont keep it with your other paraphenalia, my mom comes in my room and "cleans" every so often, i know how to hide my shit all over my room but the pd stays just out in the open with some incense in the aromatherapy cap

i live in a household that is decidedly not 420 friendly, i even volunteered to spend my own money to get a med card, and they still wouldnt accept my use and how it helps me

the pd is very unassuming looking already, i really wouldnt want to put an extra heat source in my computer either, and im not sure about the heat dissipation, the pd is very well engineered so that it radiates heat off at the same rate it replaces it once it gets to the sweet spot temperature, that would be harder to achieve with a different size ans=d shape, and inslating the heat exchanger woulld be difficult too

You don't want to add any more heat to a pc than already is in there.
From what I've heard the external part of the PD stays just relatively warm, not very hot. And the CD drive is about 1 1/2 foot from the CPU and 8 inches from the RAM, so even if it did get pretty hot, I think the effects on the overall PC temperature would be negligible.

That is for the average person, I bought all the individual parts for my computer and then assembled them giving me 5 fans that circulate airflow and 1 fan for the CPU alone. So mine would be fine : )

Like I mentioned I couldn't resist seeing what the new stuff looked like, but want to be sure everybody knows these are gonna have to undergo full 24/7 testing for a month before we are happy. and I gotta get around to making them first.

So, Baseball Opening Day, which was always special to me in honor of the P-D Slugger. Go Cubs, go Sweet Lou.

I hate to say it but the waiting list (4 units) for the figured Black Walnut for April is full (I believe) and testing hasn't started... :uhoh: Folks who have spoken up here that are already in the Purple Days Family it seems :D ... From here on we will need an e-mail request to put you on the list. Posting here doesn't count

We will try to be fair about the exotics. Limiting them to a maximum of four of any species per month. 4 Figured Maple, 4 Figured Black Walnut. We have a limited supply and when these are gone... that may be it. A few dozen, AAA and AA stuff real nice. Yours will be the next block off the pile... like that one was.

The Tea Tree and Tas Blackwood will arrive soon Edit: just arrived maybe 8-9 Tas and maybe 12 Tea tree, that's it, couple of big knots that have to be cut out and wasted, oh well, sometimes the pretty wood is nearest to the imperfections...Edit: . There may be a day when I can get more Figured Walnut and Figured Maple but the source for Tea Tree and Blackwood has dried up... when these are gone they are probably gone forever. A real shame too, very nice to work with and they make nice vapes. Very cool to have a piece of wood from the 'other side' to work with...

Yes, the exotics will be logo free and available in a choice of dark purple leather or the dark chocolate Paisley embossed leather. Hmmm, should I buy some more Paisley?
