Discontinued Purple-Days Vaporizer

Okay guys, I need help. I've had a PDP for about 2 months. The build was easy and it looks tits. But I'm spending a lot of time sucking down 3-6 stems. It's not fun either, I feel like I'm fighting a milkshake that's too cold. I've also noticed, when using the PD is in the upright position, that it will kick herb back into the heat exchanger when I stop inhaling and the pressure equalizes. This creates more of a not too stealthy smell...

I've tried at least a dozen high grade strains. I grind them fine, I grind them medium, I mix the two. I picked up a classy little drying bowl, with lid, at a Chinese market and let the herb sit for up to a week. I'll load herbs like I'm using a straw or just tap down on the material. I've tried letting the stem warm up first. I use a slow and consistent draw but I always get tired of sucking and end up frustrated then firing up my Da Buddha.

What am I missing?

On a positive note I feel like this makes a great car vape. I can't get overly medicated and I love how small and ergonomic it is. Regardless of where I use it efficiency is the best I've found. Classy too, I just want to leave this on my coffee table 24/7.

I also found a rough transition from the DBV to the PD, but I got through it and im enjoying my myrtle PD like everyone else here.

You should suck harder when you load it, and suck till theres a bit of herb sticking out of the end, push it down hard with your finger, then tilt the stem up and suck hard while tapping on the end of the stem with your finger so it settles and gets packed securely.

Important tip: before you insert the stem, tap the bowl down on your palm firmly to see if its secure. Dont grind your herb TOO fine either or you wont be able to pack it properly. It takes practice. Do you keep your PD on all the time?

try leaving the stem in for just a few seconds before starting the hit, and feel free to tilt it back towards you a bit while hitting it.

It took me a few weeks at least before I got the technique down and my unit had retained some more heat so that I didnt have to strain my lungs by trying to hit it for 30 seconds.

Nycdeisel,
Thanks for the reply. I haven't tried sucking hard when I'm loading the stems up. I'll give that a try later tonight.

I usually leave it on about 3 days a week and then go back to DaBuddha for the rest of the week. It was on 24/7 the first month I had it. I'll try leaving it on more and see if that helps. I've been impressed so far with the heat I'll get out of my Ash PD. The vapors are fairly thick and visible when I exhale.

No problem :D and not just sucking hard, but also continuing to do so while you push the bit sticking out down with your finger and tap on the end a few times. Dont forget to always check it before inserting the stem.

I have an Ash and a Cherry PD and the Ash definitely runs cooler. ABV comes out a nice golden brown versus the Cherry where the ABV comes out a very, very dark brown.

I enjoy them both.

I would check the power supply because they go bad , you should see how it works with the car chord

I noticed this last year, but took even more notice of it this year.
Anyone else notice when there is a dramatic change in weather that your herb will vape different? I have had the same stuff for the last few weeks. I keep it in an airtight storage container so it hasn't dried out too much. Last week my herb was coming out nice light brown. Then all of a sudden a huge cold front hit. Now my herb is coming out just a shade or two away from turning black. Now I would say that it was probably due to power issues with my PD. however I noticed the same thing with both of my PDs. ABV been coming out much darker than I am used to. And on the days where the temp seems to get away from the freezing temps we have been experiencing here.... it goes back to light brown ABV.
Now this isn't a problem with me, just an observation. Just something I notice with my fixed temp vapes. Don't really notice it so much with the other vapes

which is the best from the cherry, walnut, and myrtle?

There is no best. It all depends on two things. One, which wood do you like the looks of better and two, do you like to operate in the upper vape range or in the lower vape range. It's all personal preference.

Is it safe to assume that cherry runs cooler and walnut is in the higher vape range.with myrtle in between?

Nope. Myrtle runs cooler than either Walnut or Cherry and I believe that Cherry runs warmer than Walnut.

I've read a number of posts that support this statement, that cherry runs hotter than walnut.

My PD-clone is cherry, and it is getting pretty toasty already after minimal burn-in time. I think anything hotter than what I'm feeling now might get uncomfortable, as the wood is a bit warm to the touch.

Personally, I like the idea of a hotter-running vape, as I can cool it off through draw speed and length of hits. And I feel like I'm getting the most from my herbs, without having to run them through another vape for more extraction. I have run my PD(C) ABV through my MFLB a few times, and get little extra vapor, unless I really cook it.

OK, I just read through this whole thread. As soon as I recover and finalize a couple of sales I have going I'm pulling the trigger on one of these! I agree they are not for everyone, but after reading this e-tome I am sure it is for me! Bravo Tom on making such a fine vape and for all the communication you provide your customers. I am also an e smoker and have a beautiful handmade device for that (bottom fed juice and a two day rechargable battery). It is made by a guy in Maine behind his home. He is on the Ecig forum and you two remind me of each other. He participates in his thread and gives very personal customer service. When I spend my hard earned money I love knowing it is going to these small artisans doing what they do best and providing great product to those who choose to buy it. You are not just buying a product but also joining a small family. Right On! :peace:

I feel the exact same way!! The fact that Tom and Pammy's business is so small and local may be my favorite thing about Purple Days next to the product of course and fantastic customer service!

I really love what you two do, what an awesome example for the rest of us! Keep up the good work, you two!

I <3 my PD

Hope Tom doesn't mind me copying and pasting one of his previous posts. With reference to temperature:

385F* +/- a few degrees depending on the wood species**.
* based on comparison with digital readout vapes and a general consensus of folks who have used both and have posted on this forum.
** this is a best guess on wood species temps.
Alder a bit warmer
Cherry and Walnut 385F
Myrtle a bit cooler
Ash even cooler
All well within the Vapor Zone.
Temps are affected by wood density and the difference in R-value (insulation)
Denser than Ash just has too low an R-value and won't hold the heat well enough.

My walnut PD has settled into the perfect temperature for me, Getting about 5 very nice smooth hits with it. Awesome vape! Thanks Tom & Pammy!

When I first got the PD, I found it impossible to suck the tube. The hot vapor was burning the lips and weed dust was flying into my throat and lungs.

I had to construct this extremely efficient water bong. I use very little water just to stop the dust.

Get some glass fail. While I applaud your ingenuity, I would be worried the plastic would be leaching nasty stuff into your vaper.

Absolutely! The ambient temperature fluctuations are a major problem with the PD. This is something that the creator ignores by not adding some type of temp adjusting.
I think that what you describe is because of the increased heating of your house. The winter came and you have started to heat the home. Maybe the PD is located somewhere near the heater.

In my case it is the opposite. The winter came and the PD is not warm enough to vipe. I had to cut a tip of a sock and put it constantly over the PD to raise the temps by few degrees for it to be able to vipe again.

We don't have any glass here in Israel, zero.

Also, the only water I drink is from these bottles. So I have nothing to lose.

I would agree with you on heating up the house, however I always keep the indoor temp at 70, I cannot stand for it to be any higher. Yet I keep my PD in an area that is actually a cold room, without air vents pumping in either hot or cold air. On average the room i keep it in is 10 degrees lower than rest of house. So it is not next to a heater and kept in a colder environment away from heated air from my heater. So I cannot attribute my use of heater to my observed results
However because of my elevation of where I live (5500 ft above sea level) I have considered the fact that with extreme Cold fronts that the air pressure could potentially drop enough to effectively lower the vaporization temp. Same thing you would see if you vaped at a higher elevation than you normally vape (ie taking a trip to the mountains).

good work on the water filtration, especially with no access to glass.... whenever consumption of MJ is concerned, people can come up with cleaver fixes.

instead of covering the top with the end of a sock, have you considered using the tube part of the sock open at both ends slid around your unit? It provides enough insulation to bump up the temps without covering up the heat exchange at the top.
I just used a long tube sock and cut off the portion containing the elastic and folded it over itself so it was the same size as the PD is high. and just slid the sock over it, with the top part sticking out maybe a centimeter or so... It would make the PD run as warm as when I had it on 13v adapter.
