Discontinued Purple-Days Vaporizer

I found this forum yesterday when i was searching the internet about different vaporizers. Same time, i figured out these purple-days kind of vaporizers, and this might just be what i was looking for.

It's sad, but the only vaporizer available in my country is volcano. Even more sad, it seems that getting a purple days (Or any of the relative ones.) is next to impossible in my country. (Finland.)

Is knowing someone from united states that will first buy one there and then ship it to me, the only way to get one here ?

If so, is here any kind soul who could afford some help in this problem. Getting a purple-days would be fine, i could wait. But might be, that some of those alternatives would do too.

But especially the story behind purple days touched me. This reminded me of one guy in my country named "martikainen". This guy had his lungs destroyed by glass dust and smoking, so he can't smoke any more. But being a glass worker, he thought that if someone is going to smoke, he will do a best pipe for them. So he makes the best pipes in the world, at least in my opinion, or anything i have came to know. I actually had one when i was yonger and it broke. Nowdays it's next to impossible to get one, the guy does not have a phone number or even an addres, he just shows up to some finnish store when he feels like it, sells his pipes with cheap price and when the rumor spreads that "martikainen" is available somewhere, it's a matter of hours when they are all sold out. Some individuals even sell them forth with harder price. This guy also puts a number to every pipe he makes, the early numbrs are collector stuff nowdays. Dunno what number my pipe was, but a friend has a number 13 if i rememer right.

Of course, some individuals have a priviledge of knowing this guy, and can just ask him to make a pipe for him.

But putting that aside, i'm not interested in smoking anymore in my life. I too have some affection off glass dust and some other harmful substances or neuro toxins that have destroyed my lungs to some degree. I get lot's of ill effects from various places, stuff and especially from smoke. I also think, that i have some allergies now that i did not have when i was yonger. Actually i had none.

I would really like to have my own purple days vaporizer to use when needed so, and maybe start having my "purple days" in some point of future like many in this forum might be having.

Also, i think i have read something about purple days maker's blindness. Is this truth. He must be really skilled when making these things without vision, hope he won't hurt himself in the process. I respect what he does and would want one of his seemfully amazing product of heart. As bad as i wanted a "martikainen" when i smoked, but did not get one.

In the past, i had some leg problems and my father knew one massagear he recommended. I went to his home where he did his job, and the guy was blind. But was he one of the best massagers out there, sure i think so. Also, he knew his stuff and gave me many self treatment advices. One strange thing he did many times was some strange technique where he first massaged my muscles and then put my body to some stance and pressed with his fingers below some bones or something. That did hurt, a lot. And same time it itched. One of the strangest physical feelings i have had so. But it did work, and help me. And when he did it, i giggled and screamed in pain at the same time, that might have sounded chaoticly strange.

Goes a bit off topic, sorry for that. Also i went to one thai massager once and she told me that her mother can massage some illnesses away that western people often operate as surgery in hospitals. Wow.

First i just had to ask about the purple days thing, but got too excited and typed some various random stuff. I apologize from that.

But anyway, can anyone help me in this matter of purple days, time is not an issue to me and i'm not even currently using any substances to smoke or vaporize. I just think of my future in this.

Welcome to the Forum Isto.

First about my blindness, I was not in complete darkness blind. I had cataracts which were getting progressively worse and got very bad by the end. But, in my country, you have to pay cash money for medical treatment (without insurance) and I was saving up for the eye surgery when other life threatening illness required a couple of surgeries and hospital stay. There went all our savings (real quick) and more (a lot more). So eye surgery was not an option for a while and I became progressively more blind, you might see this in a couple of my videos, I can. But, I had work that I could do, at close range (3-6", 7-15cm), with strong glasses and magnifiers. Toward the end, when we had almost saved enough, it got pretty scary and very, very dim. But we had finally saved enough to go get one eye fixed. It was a whole new world! Very bright and such a joy to see Pammy's face again.

Back to Finland and the PD. While we won't ship a Purple-Days Original outside North America, we do ship our Pandora Kit (PDP Purple-Days Pandora).

Why don't we ship PDs outside North America? Warranty and shipping costs. It's about $50 to get trackable International postal service. So warranty service is not possible without huge cost. BTW PDs only have a warranty to the original purchaser, so no warranty is available outside North America and you would not have a warranty in Finland since you are not the original purchaser. Just want you to know that.

The Pandora Kit comes with no warranty, because you build it, not me. It is the same parts, made in our workshop but in a kit form, with a data DVD that has video and Captioned Pictures and text instructions. As the builder you can be your own warranty service. Should anything ever happen to the unit, you know how it was built and can be your own repairman. With just 4 solder connections and just one resistor (for heat) there isn't much to go wrong.

There is a Pandora thread on this forum with some builder feedback. And you can get more ordering info at http://purple-days.com/Pan1.html there is a little revolving world on the page which links to International info.

+++

Pammy just left for the airport and will return Monday evening if all goes well. So, no mail pickup or packages sent till Tuesday and expect e-mail delays till then. :peace:

Oh, good to hear that you are actually not wholly blind. I suppose you are the one making these things. Only one eye ? You are saving for other one ?

Wouldn't that 50 shipping cost be the same for that pandora kit also ?

Is it possible to still buy a one you have made if one would be willing to take the "risk" of no warranty, which would be the case in pandora kit also.

The rason i'm asking is not because i'm lousy, it's because i really am very very poor at building even the most simply electrical things. In past, i broke my fan that cools the processor of my comp. Ok, the fixing would have cost a lot in the store so, i bought another fan and tried to install it. As i installed it, i happened to break the processor, oh my. Then i had to buy a new processor and yet a new fan. Not sure did i brake those also or did i get it right that time, but i ended up selling the whole machine never getting it to work and bying a laptop. The buyer said that it worked just fine when he attached few parts to it. He had it dirt cheap.

I might get some other one to build that kit for me, and i will check those links you posted now.

But still, i'm far more keen to a one that the inventor have built. It has some strange value that i may think so.

I got one done and started saving up and had the other one done too, so both eyes are fully functional and I am seeing 20/20. I need reading glasses, but that cool as I need safety glasses most of the time anyway. You get a choice when you select the implants. Near vision or far vision. For me it made sense to choose glasses for close work.

Yes, $50 is the trackable USPS Express Mail for any kit.

I hear if you go to one of those places they will massage something away, not sure if it's illness though ;)

I also saw the "martikainen" pipes here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X0VaPbCA9k & http://www.martikainen.info, there used to be a video on Youtube showing the making of these pipes but I can't seem to locate it, I have wanted one of these ever since I saw the video, he made them in a very old fashioned and traditional way.
Edit: found the video showing him making these "reed stem pipes" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAWLB87ieWg

Try the build, I have not built one but everyone seems to rant about how much easier it was than they thought, and the instructions even come with a video I think. You will enjoy vaporizing.

Again, off topic, but i actually saw that "reed stem pipes" video of ATV from television when it aired. ATV was an exctellent channel and totally amateur.

I will concider this pandora kit a bit more and study it through this forum before making any decisions. Also, i'm in no hurry and will propably not need any more material in quite a time so.

Maybe if i find a martikainen from some shop here, i might send it to you ? But smoking is bad for you :)

Mr. Martikainen says that he eats his dosage.

Btw, kinda off topic again, but hemp seeds are exctellent food. It's all i use hemp for nowdays.

Porridge with berries & seeds, it's a good and healthy way to start a day.

Also, those are not really thai massagers, they are called something else.

I'm suprised that there is a internet site like that .info. Not sure is it "martikainen's" own site though ?

Darn, I just thought of this, Isto. Silver Surfer Vapoprizers makes an international model (for your voltage) and ships to the EU. So you aren't just limited to the Volcano.

Yeah, there are probably many kind of vaporizers that could be ordered through internet. As for silver surfer, i checked that out also. I checked many many vaporizers from this forum and other forums. But the most interesting ones are these wooden can vapos like purple days. I like wood as a material and they seem simple, and efficent. Efficiency is pretty important for me, i have used volcano many times and i think it consumes quite a bit, quite a fast.

As for silversurfer, there was something in the desing i did not like. Maybe the looks, or something, but did not seem like my thing. Unless i encounter something even more special than purple days type of vapos, then it's the type of vape i would like to be using.

Of course, there could be need of other type of vapos too, like one pocket size for outdoor use and such on.

Yeah that power supply is one problem, but i'm pretty sure there are adapters available to fix that problem.

Despite, that it had something againast my eye in the videos of silver surfer, you are suggesting it. Is it that good of a vape ?

Somebody already suggesten in woodeez discussion that it would be a great addition to that kind of vape to have a battery to vape outside. I think "extreme q" vaporizer has one. This could be a cool add on for someone traveling with bicycle or by walking. Might be, that one would not need another vapo for outside use then. The large heat up time might be problem for some situations though.

I find the combination of a Purple Days for home use and a Magic Flight Launch Box, which lives in my shirt pocket, to be a great combination. The Purple Days is always ready when I need it at home, and the Launch Box can be used anywhere, anytime. I have an Extreme also, and while I always enjoy it when I use it, it mostly sits unused these days.

My Extreme gets no love either nowadays, so much more tedious to turn on/warm up, pack the (much larger) bowl, etc. Ultimately the PD seems to always be calling me, I can go from empty stem to :ko: in no time.

I have a question about the Purple Days. Im thinking of getting the Pandora kit cuz I rely want one now but Im going to be keeping it/using it in my car mostly because I cant really in the house. So question is I know its supposed to be left on cuz warmup time is so long but what do you do when you get somewhere and have to turn your car off? To go in a store or whatever will it cool down and Ill have to wait 40 minutes again? I would like to just get this straight to see if its best for me, thanks..

This is probably a stupid question but, with the pre set temperature of purple days modelled for american power (120v 60hz and plugs A & B) and Finlands (230v 50hz and plugs C & F, i have both c & f ones in this house) how can the purple days operate at the same actual level here than in us ?

Could it end up to be a little colder or little hotter, or various depending on stuff ?

Also, what kind of adapter should i need for that.

That pandora kit seems to be probably the most realistic way of having a woodcan type vaporizer here in my country. I think woodez won't even ship to Finland and not support any power advice/service.

I finally found that page in your link you mentioned about pandora kit, somehow it slipped my eye last time.

The only problem with that would be the power, the skill and the tools to put it up. I also lack the tools.

Isto, The kit isn't for everybody. Only you can decide.

I show a picture of the tools you may need (some are duplicates). Most folks have most of them in the Kitchen 'fix-it' drawer. Screwdriver, hammer, pliers etc... And some of the special tools, like the wire cutters, I give simple substitutes for such as nail clippers, or tweezers and rubber band, instead of hemostats. The soldering iron can be obtained for about $12 USD if you can't borrow one from a friend. The ring pliers can be borrowed or bought for about the same.

The power required is 12 Volts AC or 12 Volts DC (center Positive or Negative, doesn't matter) @ 1000 mA (milliAmps) or higher. That can also be listed as 1A output or higher.

Input voltage (wall outlet Voltage) doesn't matter as the transformer (that you will buy, the part you plug into the wall) converts the output you will use into 12V. That's why the unit works in the car with a simple fused cord and plug for your lighter outlet (included). The plug size that fits the PD is the Type M 2.1mm x 5.5mm DC power plug, a common plug size.

Resistance is set, Voltage is set, Temperature is set. Outside influences such as air temp and draw speed can change results.

Yeah, i know for sure that pre assembled one would be better for me. Would be "d'oh" to order one only to break it when assembling it. But it seems i do not have any options since only pandora kit is shipped outside US.

And only purple-days ship anything outside US, props for that. A pandora kit is better than nothing, and more i read this forum, the more it makes me want this type of vaporizer over any other.

Also, purple days is the only one i have not yet to encounter someone reporting some problem. Someone broke his/her woodeez with normal use and i have read some minor problems with myrtle zap reported here. So seems that your purple days is the best of these in opinions of customers / consumers.

Also, myrtle zap had some power issues someone mentioned, that it would be best using 13.5V or something instead of 12. Dunno really, but seemed like it lacks something purple days does not.

One really far stretched and almost paranoid thought came to my mind, hope it does not offend you anyway. Dogs being really nice and cool folks, i noticed you have pictures of dogs, and might have some. What if someone is highly allergic to dogs and you assemble / build those vaps in same place / same hands or clothes you pet your dog with. Could there be something that might cause dog allergics to have some allergic effects inhaling through your vape ? This may seem ridiculous, but this just crossed my mind and i decided to type it. If in a million chance that would happen, someone allergic might think he is getting something nasty and dangerous through a vape not realizing that it woud be just effects of a dog. This is why i asked, or has something like that happened in the past, i higly doubt though. Is there any dog allergic using purple days who can tell ?

Masbanji92: I guess that depends on the time it is unplugged/unpowered ? Hopefully someone can give you some real information about that.

No, i did not turn the music off. Actually i turned off other music i was listening to find out what was going on there. It was quite a short.

Purple-Days are not indestructible. We have units returned for service under warranty. We are here for that.

Some of them were because I couldn't see my solder at one point and did a poor job with some connections. Got most of them right, but wasn't 100%. Clips that come loose in hard drops can be fixed easy enough, and we send a maintenance tool now-days, but if someone lets it go and doesn't fix it they can destroy the inner walls of the wooden body with the heat exchanger widening the hole.

Purple-Days have only used 12 Volt wall power.

When I used the old designs I felt they lacked stamina over the length of a draw, loosing ability to continue to transfer adquate heat to the airstream. The units I got required 13 Volts (13.5 was not available at the time) to satisfy my tastes. They had a simple geometry with very little surface area and a very wide airpath. http://purple-days.com/DarkFin2.html turn the stupid music off and scroll down for a comparison of the two designs. The Purple-Days has far greater surface area and similar mass though above a point mass is not important. It's really about surface area and creating turbulence to create maximum heat exchange to the airstream. The set of fins you see is repeated 5 more times between heat sinks. 6 Sets of fins (72) in Black Oxide (it helps transfer the heat) coated Stainless Steel between 5 Stainless Steel heat sinks. And the wall to Heat exchanger tolerance and the sawtooth profile of the heat sinks creates the turbulence.

Something like the radiotor of a car wouldn't work well as a solid block but does well with fins distributing the energy from the heat sinks.

Just sent a batch of PDs (30) to our retailer VapeNow.com and I have a good head start on the last of the wait list. Bodies turned and bored, lasered, heat exchangers built, heater harnesses built etc. Gonna wipe that list out and start fresh.
Great to hear this! I literally got in my order the very day that VapeNow had to close the wait list to catch up (3/18), which had said roughly 3 months on the wait time at that point. I've been waiting very anxiously for the past 4 months for some sort of update on this, and it excites me to know that you have finally gotten close to the end of the wait list.

Welcome to the forum, Br34kthr0ugh. The very last 30 are on my desk with leather glued on. In the morning they will be trimmed and finishing started. Vapor tubes and tips are started, but need finishing also.

And just so people aren't mis-lead, by a poster on this forum. I don't take money and sit on it. I am paid (wholesale) for 30 at a time. I make and send them and get money to make more. Delaying production only delays my paycheck... Of course most of you are smart enough to know that... Others :uhoh: think you are sheep and will believe anything...

A long wait, was never something I wanted to see, and literally didn't want to know about. Finally I decided to put a stop to order taking (by our retailer) till we were caught up. After this we will be taking a short break. When we return Vapenow.com will still be our retailer. With two wood choices. I will still make units at a steady pace. And Vapenow will sell stock on hand. No wait list. No requests to be notified will be honored. first come first served, then sold out till next shipment arrives. :)

No, the units on the desk aren't even paid for yet. Sometimes the check is ahead of units made, sometimes not, we have a very trusting relationship.

What happened was, demand out stripped production, VapeNow's list just kept growing faster than production. Then we hit production snags... they happen. One recently, with a quill return spring breaking.

You can only do what you can do. Gotta run.

What's Going On?
Tom I have sent you an email regarding the clip on the PD, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about my wall adapter. I left my PD plugged in last night and about an hour ago I went to use it an it was dead cold. I moved to another outlet and it started heating up. I later had to switch back to an outlet in my room and that one didn't work either. I have tried other plugs in these outlets and they work so I am confused. I have taken it out to my car and it is heating up fine. Thanks for any help :).

That is a little odd have you tried using a power strip or surge protector? If other appliances work when plugged into the outlets in question I'm not really sure what else it could be unless there's a faulty connection exacerbated by the conditions set when using those specific outlets like a strain on the power cord. Best of luck in figuring out the problem! On a side note you can always purchase a secondary wall adapter from Tom and Pam if you think yours might not be working properly, I believe they cost $20 when sold separately. http://www.purple-days.com/Other_Stuff.html

I'm an unhappy man today - my PD seems to have died. What's worse - I'm in Australia. (I got the thing almost a year ago when they were still getting shipped internationally)

The heat exchanger has come loose from its housing, so by grabbing the protruding tube at the top (where the stem goes in) I can wiggle and turn it one way or another, though the movement is restricted to the small angle that the crossbar has to itself in the open bit of the C-shaped clip.

It's still getting power, as I can tell by a little trick I discovered - putting my lip up to the tube will produce tiny electric prickles when it's on (which I do while it's still cool of course) - but this time, no heat. Boohoo. :(

So um, Tom, what can be done about this situation? Mind you, I have a very good friend with a well-stocked metalworking workshop for his business, so if there's anything I could do myself (or get my friend to do) this shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry, I didn't see this till now.

The car cord is a great troubleshooter. If it's red LED is lit you know you have power (and a good fuse) and as long as the plug isn't damaged you should have power to the PD. And as you say it heats... so we have narrowed it to the wall power supply.

Checking a wall power supply: Check your outlet with a lamp or radio etc... Plug the wall power supply into the known working outlet, but do not plug the PD in. Let the power supply alone for 30 minutes, then check with the back of your hand for warmth. Is it warm? Then the transformer is working and you have a broken cord or plug. The wire can be cut back (when the power supply is unplugged) and wires stripped and a new plug can be attached. Transformer failure is very rare, there just isn't much to go wrong in an AC to AC induction transformer, no Electronics, just two coils of wire...

Power supplies are available at Jameco.com, part #10081 it's the only transformer we have ever used. And you can pick up DC transformers at Radio Shack. 12 Volts AC or DC @1000mA or higher and a type M 2.1mm x 5.5mm power plug center pos. or neg. Radio Shack also has the Type M plugs to repair a transformer cord.

And I was typing that when I saw you post QBit. My e-mail address is under my avatar give us a shout I'm sure we can get you fixed up. Asking the forum won't help.
