Indeed, extreme, and I would argue it became necessary when plainclothes officers began abducting legal residents off the streets without identifying themselves. Secret police disappearing people is kind of exactly why minorities have long armed themselves. The only way to deal with a rogue state that has cast aside even the pretense of rule of law is to make sure that you have meaningful community support and mutual aid networks, and community defense networks and plans are becoming an all-too-real necessity.

And about the fact that it is happening here: I get it. It is shocking to have a global narrative so thoroughly upended, and seeing America's overt descent into mask-off fascism is not what most people anticipated. I will throw out that there is a real point about how this has always happened here in less obvious ways, and the American empire killed like a million people in their last forever war. We've always been like this. The only difference is a matter of scale.

Yes. I have answers to all this. The answers are all yes. American hegemonic power has toppled dozens of governments in the Global South. We've killed millions and millions of people between globally-induced famines, wars, pollution, and climate change. If you got sick in this country and didn't have insurance, you just literally died. We have one of the highest incarceration rates per-capita in the entire world, meaning the average American is more likely behind bars than the average citizen in almost any other country. We have a felony recidivism rate of like 62% with massive inequalities along racial and gender lines. About one in eight people in this country is food insecure and those percentages are rising.

American "exceptionalism" was always propaganda. A lot of people have been hurt by this state, and they have been screaming about it for a long time. Being right has never mattered, because we have always been right about the horrors this country inflicts on the world while pretending to adhere to the "rule of law". We never joined the ICC! We explicitly promised to invade the Hague if they ever tried an American for committing war crimes in the name of our empire! We've always been a nation ruled by fascist oligarchs, and the average American has always been bombarded by propaganda to keep us separated.

I could have made this gentler, but I do not have capacity for that at this moment in history. Any liberal who still believes that American liberalism can somehow "come back" and things will be better is woefully mistaken. Capitalism is a system that inherently works to funnel additional wealth to those who already have it, meaning any kind of capitalism will always devolve to this hyper-concentrated state of wealth-hoarding. I don't see this as the "market" taking over the state or good for capitalism at all. The market is being very controlled right now and oligarchs are being put into place. Arbitrary tariffs being levied on countries all over the world is the the complete opposite of "free" markets and capitalism. The markets aren't "running free" but more so "running away". I would argue that this is what happens when oligarchs game the market for their own interests and there's no regulation whatsoever.

All the major US indexes have been in a free-fall from their highest ever point in history just a couple of months ago. This administration has been an anathema for the markets, killing 5 Trillion dollars of market cap in a couple of months with the most inane policy decisions I have ever seen in my lifetime.

There is a subtlety missing here. Capitalism can certainly lead to bad things like monopolies and the abuse of workers, but capitalist economies rely on free markets, where individuals and businesses can freely engage in transactions without significant government intervention.

I would hardly call what the administration is doing right now to markets "insignificant government intervention". The Orange menace is even trying to control Fed policy. One of the tenets of capitalism is free markets and they're certainly less free than before. It's some hideous blend of fascism and pseudo-capitalism.
