Oh, it gets even better - Covid 2.0

"Infection seems to be deadlier among older minks." Sound familiar? Hopefully it won't spread to other types of fur farms - chinchilla, rabbit, racoon, fox - or other agricultural animals.

"The U.S. is the fifth largest mink farming country in the world. Of the roughly 400 fur farms in the U.S., around 275 of them are mink farms and they can be found in at least 23 states. Between three to four million minks are killed in the U.S. each year, with Wisconsin being the top “producing” state followed by Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Minnesota."

Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech is strongly effective, early data from large trial indicate

Pfizer and partner BioNTech said Monday that their vaccine against Covid-19 was strongly effective, exceeding expectations with results that are likely to be met with cautious excitement — and relief — in the face of the global pandemic.

The vaccine is the first to be tested in the United States to generate late-stage data. The companies said an early analysis of the results showed that individuals who received two injections of the vaccine three weeks apart experienced more than 90% fewer cases of symptomatic Covid-19 than those who received a placebo. For months, researchers have cautioned that a vaccine that might only be 60% or 70% effective.

Scientists Develop Nasal Spray That Can Disable Coronavirus

Most efforts to combat the coronavirus have focused on public health measures and the race to develop a vaccine. However, a team from Columbia University, Cornell University, and others has developed something new: a nasal spray that attacks the virus directly. In a newly released study, the concoction was effective at deactivating the novel coronavirus before it could infect cells.

Many COVID-19 patients later develop mental illness, study finds

Twenty percent of coronavirus patients later develop a new mental illness, according to a study.

The most common disorders experienced by COVID-19 survivors within 90 days of their diagnoses are anxiety, depression and insomnia, according to the study published in The Lancet Psychiatry journal.

“Overpaid Executive Tax” in SF hits firms that pay CEOs 100X more than workers

San Francisco voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure to impose an extra tax on any big company that pays its highest-paid employee over 100 times more than its median worker.

The ballot question was approved Tuesday by 65 percent of voters, with 230,298 yes votes and 123,943 no votes. As the ballot question states, the new tax is to be imposed on "businesses in San Francisco when their highest-paid managerial employee earns more than 100 times the median compensation paid to their employees in San Francisco."

The tax is expected to raise $60 million to $140 million per year.

I think companies will flee San Francisco

Doctors may be better equipped to handle latest virus surge

The latest surge in U.S. coronavirus cases appears to be much larger than the two previous ones, and it is all but certain to get worse — a lot worse. But experts say there are also reasons to think the nation is better able to deal with the virus this time.

“We’re definitely in a better place” when it comes to improved medical tools and knowledge, said William Hanage, a Harvard University infectious-disease researcher.

Double lung transplants at are allowing seriously ill patients to survive COVID-19's 'bomb blast'

The double lung transplant surgery for critical COVID-19 patients, which was first performed in the U.S. at Northwestern in June, has now been done seven times at the Chicago hospital by Dr. Ankit Bharat, chief of thoracic surgery and surgical director of the Northwestern Medicine Lung Transplant Program, and a team of surgeons. The surgery is considered more difficult than other lung transplants because of the damage COVID-19 has done to the organ, Bharat said.

GM spending on EVs set to outstrip outlays on gas, diesel technologies

General Motors Co. on Thursday signaled a historic shift to the all-electric future it envisions, detailing plans to invest more on next-generation technology over the next five years than on the gas and diesel powertrains that drive its profitability.

The Detroit automaker will spend $27 billion through 2025 on autonomous and electric vehicle technology, up from the $20 billion it previously confirmed. That means more than half of GM’s capital spending and product development team will be focused on electric and autonomous vehicle programs — which now represent just a tiny fraction of the vast U.S. market.

Yep. If you thought COVID is bad, wait until all of those diseases no living creature has any immunity to start getting released from melting arctic ice.
Or we could find an amazing microorganisms that can sequester radioactive waste. We already have some helping to clean the ocean.

I hadn't thought of the upside! And cleaning up the ocean works for me, since a percentage of my State will be converted to ocean floor over the next century.

There may well be some benefits but this won't be one of them until the laws of physics are repealed.

These are click bait pop science headlines/almost articles.
Here is a link to the paper the first almost article is based on . Microbial degradation of isosaccharinic acid at high pH
TL;DR We found a bug in a non radioactive lime pit in England that survives in high PH and breaks down isosaccharinic acid. This ability may help by reducing the water solubility of radioactive materials formed by the breakdown of other radioactive materials. This is expected to be a problem in long term sequestering schemes such as burying the material in cement sarcophagus including deep burial in geologically stable hard rock mines.

The second paper is behind a pay wall. /sad Sequestration of Radionuclides Radium-226 and Strontium-90 by Cyanobacteria Forming Intracellular Calcium Carbonates

All lifeforms contain radioactive material. That is why carbon dating is possible for example. What seems interesting and perhaps unique about this microbe is that it encases these two isotopes in a shell of calcium carbonate. Is it at all sequestered? I don't know but a Giger counter and some microbes will answer that question instantly. It's got to be sketchy at best but still interesting.

The only way to effectively sequester highly energetic radioactive material is to cover it with layers of very dense material thick enough to be capable of stopping the high energy particles being emitted. Several feet of concrete or somewhat less lead works well.

Bugs are tough but not that tough.
Interesting rabbit hole, thanks.

The possibility is there for microorganisms. Is it the final solution to our radioactive waste I don't think so.
Rhodotorula taiwanensis is another thing being used also. Its a yeast fungi!

I do truly believe we need to increase biodiversity and microorganisms to balance our planet health's.

Without microorganisms we don't exist.
