I am looking to design a new vaporizer. But before I start planning

Ok. I have been here about 2 months now, and from what I can see, there is more cumulative vaping experience here than anywhere else I can think of.

As such, I come to you with this question:

I am looking to design a new vaporizer. Something not only with my own design elements, but that is crowd-sourced from this forum. I am looking to make the vape a very small profit item, with as low an MSRP as possible - however I want it to be as no holds barred, truly high end of a device as seems appropriate to those most experience vapists - you guys!

I have plenty gainful enough employment elsewhere and truly don't need a big money spinner for myself.

So, what is it you want in a vape when it comes to:

Heating type (convection/conduction/hybrid)?
Heating Control type? (Presets/Fully adjustable)
Materials?
Whip options, GonG types, accessories?

I want to say right now that I plan to make this device the first to be able to accept different sources of energy - more on this very soon, I need to do some field work to investigate how best to incorporate the 3 or 4 different heat sources that will be able to be used. All will be optional and will able to be bundled together for discounts with purchase of the vaporizer.

This is unashamedly being made to be the one vape to rule the all. A jack of all trades, and if we get the design and I get the execution right, a master of all too! This is not going to be expensive, I'm talking $200-$300 type of price range.

I am currently planning for the form factor to be modular, but also to be able to be put together into a single self-contained unit.

Oils and Flowers will obviously be accommodated. Portability and desktop use, thermometer with real-time heat readings, all glass vapor path.

I know this sounds ambitious, but here's the kicker - I am looking to think of a way to honour those who contribute to the design of the final piece - and want you guys to decide what that is together what this reward will be.

Finally, I will be fastidiously going over MSDS's to ensure that all materials used are 100% safe for the application at hand. There will be no melting plastic. There will be no taste-imparting synthetic materials. The unit will be built to be sturdy enough to take the occasional drop that a vaked user might reasonably expect to occur during use/cleaning. The unit will be built with safety in mind, especially with regard to heat of parts that are handled ordinarily during use.

Mods: This is not a current project, I have work which will prevent me from working any kind of final design/prototypes until at least the middle of this year. This is also not going to be a particularly commercial venture, I want this to have a more open, community driven approach to vaporizer manufacturing. Nonetheless, I will seek permission from VTAC as per the guidelines before beta prototypes are designed and before I look for testers. I hope this is all cool!

Now, tell me what you all want in a vaporizer!

nice i looking for something that hasn't been made looking for a forced air plug in unit with whip
that can vape 1oz to 4 oz at a time and that can be left on to for hours at a time worry free would need a very wide bowl so it wouldn't take as long to vape the 1oz figure 8 to 10 inches wide so herb is less than a 1 to 4 inch thick. figuring 1 inch per oz

(if your wondering i am planning to run vapor thru a condenser to produce oil)

I want a variety of bowls to be able to service a spectrum of needs, this is one I would like to accommodate, you basically want the shisha of vapes? :)

Hey man, I plan to make these indefinitely, to be honest, this will be a therapeutic exercise for a scientist and ex-technician who misses working with his hands!

In terms of testing units, I have already had some interest from a member or two here (hehe I said member!) to be beta testers. However, I can't stress enough that prototypes won't be ready til later in the year, I have field work to do for a study I am working on and a subsequent research report which will take up a lot of time for me in the near future!

Also, huge respect for your work on computer controlling the temperature and working on consistency of temperature. This was the first factor that led me to think vapes could be improved when I got my PNP. Glad to see that you have already been working to resolve this issue for fellow vapers!

I would love to buy one of your Bud Toasters, if cash permits when you have them ready to sell :)

I was thinking about this. I have an electric grill that has a detachable power cord. It basically attached to the appliance side with a magnet. Its pretty slick and I'm sure it would save a nasty spill if someone were to trip over the cord. It also makes storing it a breeze.

This isnt it, but its similar, but mine is a lot smaller (quit smirking):

Sticksnstones - which aspects of the cloud/herbalizer? I've never used either myself lol, my experience with actual vapes so far covers PNP, E-Nano, Lotus and the crappy plastic and glass conduction flower shaped chinese vape I bought years ago at $50 more than I paid for my Lotus from a LHS! At the time I used that one to vaporize the much nastier things I used to put into my body years ago :/ - not recommended and glad it didn't survive those days, imagine the taste!!!! Yuck!

Tai Sun - I'll get right to work on that brother ;)

lookhigh - you have stumbled upon my core concept in a roundabout way. I am looking to design a vape that can be portable and desktop, but not just powered by a battery. I am going to include modular components (that snap in reliably and not in a cheap, poxy way) that allow for battery power (w/ battery pack), AC power (w/ 220v/120v options) and also Butane heating such as the Lotus (absolutely no way I am allowing this to compromise safety, there will be no butane in the air path people!).

Let's just wait and see what I can put into a prototype my friend. I just might take you up on that offer if my other work picks up and this ends up something people are ordering loads of! ;)

The plan is to have an option to vape the same bowl in your gong/stem by either AC 120/220 cartridge heater convection, various capacity and size battery power units, as well as butane/heat cap. All connected to the same main unit of the device. The idea is a single, small, but modular and very versatile device. One vape to keep them all, and in the darkness find them!

One vape to rule them all is my dream as well my friend, ever since I discovered vaping! A FF/Lotus hybrid could be just that if you can figure out a way to do it! :)

That sounds like what i had in mind, 1 unit that can do everything.
Has to do everything well, that's the trick.

The difficult part is of course getting the design and execution right - ideas are a dime a dozen. I feel like if this is your first attempt, you might want to design something that does one thing well, then improve on it with successive iterations. The more things you want to optimize for, the more compromises you have to make, because some characteristics are by nature at odds with each other:

  • Portability vs power
  • battery capacity vs size
  • fit and finish vs cost
  • ease of use vs customizability
  • repairability vs bulkiness

Also, remember that a $2-300 retail price has to leave enough room to make it worthwhile for you. If you want it widely distributed, you'd need to leave margins for retailers as well. Even if you plan to sell directly, there's still a lot of hidden costs. Especially the cost of providing ongoing support and answering sales questions, which if you do it yourself could cost nothing in terms of money, but probably more than you like in terms of time.

sounds like you wanna try something like a simple universal heating chamber that's about 1in OD, 0.75in long, and fine threads on both ends, with a multitude of caps, batteries, power supplies, and fittings you could have manufactured cheaply given the right marketing

I actually have been mulling on this all day, vaking and watching Farscape, and I've come up with a sheet covered in modules with crude designs haha. It's awesome.
