@Snooppossum: So far I’m loving my Crown grinder. I feel the grind is fluffier than my SLX which is fluffier than my Space Case. I think the SCS produces the fluffiest grind I’ve seen but I haven’t used the BCG. I do like a fluffy grind but I feel size and consistency are more important. I would suggest first trying the BCG medium plate before you buy a new grinder.
I’ve continued testing my Crown and it’s still performing well. I’ve been using both plates with good results in my convection vapes; E-Nano, Sticky Bricks, Grasshopper & Hopper io. I prefer a finer grind in general. The first strain I ran through the Crown fine plate was a bit moist and resulted in a medium-fine consistency. The next strain I tried was a bit dry and the consistency was noticeably finer, enough to reduce airflow but not unmanageable. The medium plate produces a nice fluffy consistent medium grind.
I’ve been searching for a grinder that won’t lock up. I often get very high potency strains and the SLX will lock up once THC gets around the 24% mark. My Space Case “titanium” finish actually handles high potency cannabis better than the SLX but the rim around the edge eventually builds up grinder hash and then it starts to stick.
The Crown isn’t grinding or pushing anything against the outer edge so I figured I could eliminate that problem. The first moist strain I ground was 19.8% THC and didn’t stick at all, it ground quickly also, in less than 10 seconds. The second strain I tried was 26.7% and the first time I used too little pressure at first and it didn’t grind much, just moved the material around so I gave it a bit more pressure and it worked well. The second time I used too much pressure at first and it did stick a little, but the grinder pieces weren’t locked up and I simply opened it up, moved the buds and used less pressure and it worked well.
It’s not finicky at all but it’s a different feeling than a normal grinder. It doesn’t close all the way until you have ground all your material. You let the magnet do most of the work and use light pressure while “rocking it” back and forth. I haven’t had any more problems, it grinds a gram or more in less than 10 seconds every time. I’ve since used an even stronger (27.8%) strain that’s been curing at 62% humidity and it ground up effortlessly.
There are a few other things I like about the Crown. The toothless design makes it really simple and fast to load. Both the fine plate and medium plate are included. The herb milling chamber is completely stainless steel so it should hold up better than aluminum with extended use.
One area it could be improved is if it were a threadless design. The herb chamber is 1/4 turn threaded so it opens quickly. The pollen chamber takes many more turns to open and the dense threads are one more thing to clean. I generally prefer a four piece grinder but I think
the Crown might be best as a three piece. They have announced a three piece design. I’m not a big fan of the large logo on top. The price is high but with the stainless steel milling chamber it should last a long time.
