Herb Grinders

Loving my sharpstone so far! Very nice finish (got the grey one - sorry no pics). Seems to be well made with quality materials. Though the grind is a little more coarse than I was hoping for, it's not enough to be a cause for complaint. Actually, the more I use it, I'm starting to kinda like the slightly coarser grind. And the kief collection is superb! Overall, I'd definitely recommend it to others. Can't see myself ever spending more on a "name brand" grinder considering the quality of these at less than half the price. Just my :2c:

No matter the dense-ness of material, I have never had any turn as easy as SCS- I swear this could shred a chunk of granite.

After nearly a year, mine still turns buttery smooth.

I did recently do a bath with the pollen screen in ISO, and the collection rate increased quite a bit. Something I highly would suggest doing every few months if you like pollen.

So, umm, is the little black ring thingy in the SCS safe to submerge in ISO?

Mine has gotten rather gunked up (I've really only cleaned it once since I've owned it...), so I'm thinking I'll just leave it to soak in ISO for a few days if it's all safe to do so.

Apparently you haven't used the mini. Sometimes it's just too small for sufficient torque with those blocky teeth. Only grinder I've had to give up on and unload. The larger sizes aren't an issue.

I assume it's the o-ring? No, I wouldn't soak that.

Like most stuff, frequent cleanings make for easy cleaning. A once over with a toothbrush and alcohol, on a regular basis, and you won't have to consider soaking it.

You are right! I don't use a mini unless I want arthritis;)

2-2.5 inches is as small as I would ever buy a grinder of ANY brand. I don't need my fingers and hands cramping up:D

Whelp, this may not be a popular opinion, but after hundreds upon hundreds of uses under my belt with a 4 piece Santa Cruz Shredder, 2 piece Space Case, 4 piece unbranded generic grinder, a credit card grater, and 2 piece plastic pyramid tooth shredder....well...I found that they all work and perform to the the same degree. All operate smoothly when freshly cleaned, but get gunked up over use. Shred/grind/cut quality varies upon very, very close inspection but all vape equally well by my estimation and observation in Pax, Volcano, and SSV (based on effect from said herb as well as overall ABV consistency, take from that as you will).

Were I to go back and purchase my first grinder there are only two main criteria that I feel are relevant to me now: capacity and whether I want a kief screen or not. I got the CC shredder to help prepare herb for the MFLB when I had it but once that vape was out of my rotation I haven't found the need for a particular herb grind. It's nice to try all the different models out there, and my SCS turns and shreds more effortlessly than my unbranded grinder, but was it really worth the extra money? Nah, not for my uses. Just felt this may be worthwhile to anyone on the fence about getting a new grinder.

What skeezes me out is the idea of tiny pieces of aluminum chipping off of cheap grinders - at least that's what I hear happens. That's what has me considering the small SCS 3 piece for close to $50 or the small SC titanium 2 piece for close to $20 at puffitup - I think i'm leaning towards the SC Ti because of price. But then I have to find a separate storage container. Which would be the better choice?

Does anyone know how much the small SCS 3-piece hold in storage? Around how many grams?

Yeah, I can understand that fear and have seen it stated here a few times, but I haven't seen any noticeable evidence of chipping...the points of contact have certainly become more worn but more of a compressed-worn as opposed to a stripped-worn.

Mildly interesting discovery: 3-pc SCS fits almost perfectly in a jyarz satchmo

Get the three piece. That extra storage is awesome and could probably hold under an eighth.

@snackmaster Is that a small 3 piece SCS?

@mixchu69 Do you think a 3 piece SCS is still better than a small 2 piece Titanium SC and a Satchmo? - with the 2 piece and Satchmo that would come out to $40 ($10 cheaper than SCS 3 piece and a bit more storage space).

Yeah, it's a small - only size they currently offer the 3-pc.

And in response to your other question, if storage space is a priority you might be happier with the SC and satchmo. I got rid of my last 2-pc because it was a pain to move material from the grinder to a classic jyarz, but it'd be really easy to dump into a satchmo. Satchmo holds significantly more than the 3-pc too - more than double.

If you often need to grind dense, hard material, there is no easier grinder than SCS. If all you are grinding is fluff, you might appreciate saving a few bucks with SC or another brand.

I have a 2 pc Spacecase myself and use it too. I really like it. I use that when i need a fine grind and very affordable at $20. Thinking about that with a jyarz (which I love), I feel that it is so much easier to have it one piece where there are only 2 chambers, one to grind and one to scoop. I'm not a huge fan of Kief alone so I like it mixed with my flowers, so I don't buy the 4 piece.

Before the 3 piece SCS, I never thought about coarse grinds. I have always used conduction vapes like pax and ascent that prefer fine grinds. But when I started getting into combo (convection/conduction) and pure convection vaporizers, I prefer the fluffy grind. You tend to use less because visually it looks thicker. You won't have to worry about moving it into jyarz and all that mess. I believe the least amount of contact with the flower is crucial. I am very glad I got it.

@mixchu69 For the Vapman I understand either could work well. That's the only vape I have. I might get another in the future -not sure. Probably grasshopper, air, or e-nano - might also just stick with the one. I've read that you can get a fine grind with the SCS as well if you grind it upside down. If I understand correctly the added benefit of SCS is that you can also get a fluffy grind, which is another option, and better for convection, right? I would like the storage to be smellproof as well. It seems like the Jyarz might be better at that than the SCS. I guess it's a close call between the two. Thanks for your help.:)

No problem. Either way should work out for you. Both quality grinders and jyarz is quality too.

Those are some damn sexy grinders. I wonder if the quality is any good on them, or if the actual grinder part is just cheap crap?
A few of the listings say "50mm gunmetal grey SX4 grinder"... after some searching I found that SX4 is an inexpensive grinder made in China and available in Europe, but I could not find a 2-piece model and the results were slim. It's too bad that this beautiful handcrafted artwork may be glued on to a cheap grinder, but it's still looks great.

It's not just the art, it's functional in adding a huge amount of grip and leverage... it could be an answer for those with weak hands.

We need to show this to @Ed's TnT and see what he thinks. I would think that someone interested in something like this could send one of their favorite American made grinders to Ed and make some magic happen.

Ahh hah!!! @Kief well well, thanks for tagging me bro! This is definitely interesting, pls let me know what you are thinking I may be able to do. I would be more than happy to throw the idea around a bit and give it some thought! I am always open to suggestions and new stuff to work. Pls tell me more!

^^ This!!! If he could turn an actual quality grinder into a beautiful work of art like the ones above (and I believe he could) then I'd totally be willing to shell out some extra cash for it.

Another thought, I wonder if something like that would be possible to make with a 4-piece.... I don't see why not (although I'm no woodworker so I could be wrong ;))

How about turning your own pieces to cover a quality grinder like the Santa Cruz Shredder! You'd only need to make the outer pieces and press-fit into the wood.
