Discontinued Gn0me - lighter based vaporizers

Super interested in this one for an upcoming music festival. I will likely be bringing with a supply of Omi carts so I can stay medicated, but it would be really nice to be able to use my herbs as well. Unfortunately, the website seems to be malfunctioning and the pictures are not showing up. Being a visual person I am having difficulty understanding what I would need to order for my intended results.

I will probably use it dry most of the time, so while being able to connect to water is cool; portability and ease of use is my number one deciding factor. Which parts should I order in that case?

I get the impression glass will taste better than most of the competition (my VXC experience confirms this), but how does the gn0me stack up against the various vapor genie renditions?

If you want to use it with glass at all, I would get the "cone" (a.k.a. GonG) gn0me and the water pipe adapter. Basically it's the 2nd and 3rd items from the top of this picture:
img2561w.jpg

The heat exchanger portion just fits either into the WPA for water filtration, or into the mouthpiece with GonG tip (cone) which is shown put together (3rd item from the top) in the pic above.

Re: taste - My gn0me gives me hits that are tastier than any other portable that I have, including my VG coil. Nothing but glass provides for the purest possible vaporizing experience IMO.

Hey Stu, how do you compare the performance of the cone to the slider in terms of using it simply as a portable vape? I bought the cone and am really enjoying it and have considered adding a slider to my collection but wasn't sure whether the slider would be different enough from the cone to justify the expense.

TBH, I don't care much for the cone/GonG as a portable using the GonG mouthpiece. It was hard for me to hold it with one hand while maintaining the correct orientation (slightly raised over horizontal) while keeping the 2 pieces connected and heating it. It's a little too "crackpipish" for me. I have only tried the slider once and immediately combusted, but it was a similar experience as the cone w/ mouthpiece.

However when you connect the cone to your waterpipe, you're in for a real treat! :brow:

Ok so everyone says this about the gn0me, but nowhere do they say this thing is finicky, dangerous, and not at all user friendly...

I tried with a torch lighter:
-Tiny vape
-Green abv with tiny black

I tried with a propane torch:
-Tiny vape
-Then combustion
-Gren and black abv (zero vap-age)

I tried with a cooler torch:
-Tiny vape
-Tried heating then inhaling, inhaling while heating, pulsing, etc.
-Tiny vape
-Eventual Combustion
-Green and black abv (if anything was vaped, it was later burnt...)

So here is my final take on the gn0me:

A tiny little vape... that requires a huge blowtorch and the patience of a sober man to hold and use!

The purest "hit" on glass... but it's a hit of smoke!

No wonder people with bongs like these...

I was ready to pull the trigger until I saw that last post Stu...

I was looking to use this primarily as a portable. I think most of it's use would be 'dry' and without the addition of a water pipe for myself. If that is my intended use should I keep searching for a better portable alternative?

For most of my use in the city I can get by with the TV1. I will be without electricity for a week (charging batteries won't be an option), and it looks like a lighter based vaporizer will be my best route. I liked the idea of an all glass portable, but I also need something easy to use and easy to teach others to use. What are your suggestions Sir Stu? It seems like you have some lighter-portable experience from your signature

All I can say is that if I only got "tiny vape" and it constantly combusted, I wouldn't use it.... ever.

I use it.... a LOT.

I'm no rocket scientist and I've managed to figure out my own technique that is fairly easy to do - even when stoned - and easily repeatable.

In this video you can see my basic technique (yes, I was stoned when I shot it). I always get fat rips and have only combusted twice (yucky for sure) since I got it.

There is a learning curve, no doubt. But it wasn't a difficult one and I love using mine.

YMMV.

If I was going to be sans electricity for a week, I'd probably choose to go with a VG.

I don't doubt it since it sure seems to be working for you, but I fairly sure I would have to combust to get those results with the gn0me classic...

FWIW, I can not give the classic/slide or handheld cone my seal of approval. I just don't care for them.

I only use my (cone/GonG) gn0me now with water toys. It really shines with H20. I've given up on the slider and I don't even want to bother with the handheld cone for the reasons I already mentioned.

Stu,
Wow, interesting differences in perspective. I have been getting huge hits with the gnome cone, and I don't find it all that awkward to use with the mouthpiece. I just hold it right at or below the colored dots at a slight upward angle. I've also been using it with ground herbs and getting very few particles in my mouth. I've been shocked at how easy it is to use and shocked at how big of hits I get. I'll try to take some video later.

It's funny you mention the crack pipe, Stu. That's the main reason I got the cone over the slider. Granted, I've never seen one in person, but the slider looked more like a crack pipe to me.

Stu, i really don't get why you dont dig the classic.. I don't have the gong to compare so i leave that to you ;) but i must say that i find the classic very easy to use, i hardly ever combust and get the most tastiest clouds of all my vaporizers. I don't have one bad thing to say about it. Hooked to glass or with a torch using it like a pipe, it is the same.. tasty blue vapour and even golden abv.

@JoeKickass and all newcomers, the gn0me might be more difficult to master for some but i tell you that it will be worth the effort. I must say that, for me, after seeing what and what not to do, i was easily mastering and thoroughly enjoying the nice vapour it delivers so hang in there!

Quick tip for the first trying the classic. you can pre heat it holding it vertically, that way you easily move the tube around but be careful not to tip it forward, that could cause the herb to fall to the heating area or for the heat tube to fall. When the flame turns yellow, start pulling slowly and after a while stop heating but keep pulling because the glass is still hot. Do this for 2-3 times, the first hits are always the tastiest.

Between each hit you can rotate the heat tube a little, to stir the herb and you can also do it while you hit it. You just have to hold it with the left thumb and indicator finger and with the third finger you rotate the heating tube while you hit it.

To be fair, I've only tried my classic once. I instantly combusted so I set it aside to be thoroughly cleaned out before the next attempt. It did bring back memories of using the cone in this fashion, and therefore I was a little put off by the whole process.

My Cloud arrived the very next day, so I've been "preoccupied" shall we say and haven't even had a chance to clean out the slider.

Maybe this weekend I'll give it another whirl.

I don't have the gong as i said but what i read was that the slide, due to a less thick glass is a bit more sensible to temp variation than its counterpart but still, i think that you will easily manage it and enjoy it. There is no way around that. :D

When I do try it again, I'll be sure to use a smaller torch. I'm so used to the larger/thicker GonG version that I overdid the classic and made fire. :disgust: A smaller torch and different technique is required.

Using a smaller torch with the classic should help. I use a ronson jetlite and I don't think you could get combustion in under 20 seconds unless you're heating too close to the herb.

Is that the medium size torch? Like creme brulee size?

I have a torch lighter and a giant propane torch, I really have to get another?

It's a small and cheap one actually. I was replying mostly to Stu as that torch in his video is much bigger than what I use with the classic. Anyway, here's what works for me:

If your torch lighter has an adjustable flame, try to get it so the inner, bright blue flame is an inch tall or a little less. Position it so the tip of the inner flame is a little bit under (not touching) the rippled section of the gn0me. Slowly run it up and down the half of the rippled section closest to the herb until the flame glows orange all along that stretch. Start a slow inhale. You should be getting vapor now and should be able to keep heating for a few seconds at least without getting close to combustion. At this point I usually take the flame off and keep inhaling for another 10 seconds or so.

I'd say the best way to learn the technique that works for you is to start slow and work up. You might get a tasty hit that doesn't produce visible vapor, and know you can increase the heat more. If you get some visible vapor, experiment with your draw speed and flame application to keep it at the right temperature for longer. If you scorch the herb a little, don't do whatever you just did :). I found the learning curve steeper than with my vg, but with a little practice you should be able to get good results and even abv.

somehow it seems difficult to get a reply from the manufacturer. while waiting, i was experimenting around with the vaponic. when used right , it delivers some tasty clouds. however, combustion is easy to achieve and after trying several evenings in a row, i still can't get the right technique. does the gn0me has the same issues or is a consistent use without combustion really possible?

I don't often combust with it.

Maybe 5% of the time at the most.
Even then, It's when I've thought to myself, this bud is spent, but maybe I can milk a teeny bit more out of it...

Yea I have contacted Calen I believe it is multiple times. I even tried to go onto the website, but something was screwy with it and I couldn't order. Nor did I know exactly what to order. I had everything all picked out and priced when I talked with Calen a few months back, but I didn't have the funds then. I have many many vapes to tie me over until Calen is ready to make some money.
