I agree about the extra capacity on HG2 being better than any increase in performance from VCT5s or others.

And yeah, take the silicone off the glass and you can stick it in milk/coffee but make sure there's enough reclaim first

I'm finding the glass on the cooling mouthpiece gets dirty pretty quickly. Don't some people put glass stems like this in hot chocolate to reclaim a bit?

As for batteries, I see no reason to use a battery other than the HG2. Any minor, barely noticeable performance difference between other batteries is trumped by extra capacity. EDIT: And I have VCT5's and HE4's to compare it to.

Does the wood part of the cooling unit get very gunked up and how are you cleaning it?
The AW batteries have been recommened anyone have any experience with them?

Thanks

im using the vct4's in my firewood4 at the moment.. and uggg, i just put in a fresh battery, fw buzzes 5 times.. kill the capsule and turn off fw.. battery level is now 3 buzzes..

i have some lg hg2 on the way.. they were actually supposed to be delivered yesterday (same day amazon prime) but they never showed.. tracking says delivered, but nothing at my doorstep.

anyway, hoping the jump from 2100mah to 3000mah gets me another couple capsules worth

Wood part hasn't gotten noticeably dirty yet, seems the vapor is condensing in the glass tube. There's very little wood in the actual airpath since most of it is blocked by the silicone from the capsule.

AW is a rewrapper, stay away. Only buy batteries from trusted manufacturers like Sony, LG, Panasonic, and only from trusted vendors.

i have also been playing w my FW4 without the cooling unit.. the small mouthpiece diameter seems limiting, sure i can pull harder but a bigger opening would alleviate this. i also noticed that i get buzzes mid draw (every 10-11 seconds) with the cooling unit on. with the cooling unit off i do not get mid draw buzzes.

looking back through the thread hippogriff made his own cooling unit, with a mighty/crafty glass mouthpiece.. i was thinking of something similar typing in all kinds of keywords in google search.. then i ran across a pic of the crafty/might mouthpiece and thought, thats almost exactly what i need. then i remembered hippogriff's post http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/firewood-vaporizer.9306/page-124#post-1049192

the only thing is.. seems all the vendors for the crafty/mighty glass mouthpiece are en EU.. has anyone found a vendor that is in the US?

Would also be interested in trying that mouthpiece/CU but have no experience with woodworking.

Although I think the stock CU is better looking and for stealth, I agree that the added airflow would be a nice improvement for at home. Would also relieve the issue of it being quite hard to get a good hit while walking and using the CU at the same time

Thanks for the quick reply. Suggestions for trusted vendors for batteries would be appreciated.

Thanks

I get all mine from imrbatteries.com. Haven't let me down so far. There are other suggestions in the 18650 battery safety thread. The Milaana thread has a lot of relevant battery discussion too, since both the Mi and FW4 have the same battery requirements.

Thanks again for the quick reply. I will ck irm batteries. Appreciate the thread suggestions, will read them for more info.

Regarding 18650 li-ion batteries (please chime in and correct me if i'm wrong, as i said i am a novice with these) it seems like most of what i read says it is better not to let them discharge too low. And I understand these li-ion batteries dont develop those problematic 'memory' issues. So it would seem it's better to simply charge them more often than not.

So if you're planning to use this device every day, does it make sense to just charge the battery back up every night, even if it's still at half capacity or so? Does it make sense for these batteries to pretty much stay on the charger most of the time? I think most of these smart charges have protection circuits that stop charging the batteries when they are full, so is it okay to leave them on there?

Hagbard asks: so is it okay to leave them on there?

The conventional wisdom is not to leave the batteries charging unattended. Yes there are protection circuits but the consequences of a battery fire are such that some of us just don't take chances. I had an 18650 charging in my D2, but as I'm about to go to bed, I just unplugged it. But yeah I think these guys prefer being charged up. It's easy and quick to do once you get a routine. I'm sure there are other less conservative opinions. :)

It's the charging cutoff voltage that is the most important parameter if you want to prolong your battery life. I can't hotlink to the various graphs but you can more than double your service life by cutting off lower (ex: 4.0V or 4.1V vs 4.2V)

The new finish is reaaaally smooth/shiny. Pretty nice. I put some beeswax on my CU and it's just a bit duller. Barely a color difference and no shine to it.

I also don't notice much of a smell. There was a faint smell when I opened the box but the unit itself doesn't smell.
Anyway. Really happy to have this thing back.

I tried bumping up the temp, however, it did the "shut off" buzz after it mirrored my 8, then 5 and I picked my desired boost lv. Is that how it's supposed to go?

Also, I got what looks to be an unturned CU wood piece in my box too. :o maybe will be useful for that crafty mouthpiece mod

Edit: I'm assuming my battery door is completely new as well. They are even easier to get apart than my old one after I had sanded the bump.

Edit2: pics!

So munch, not trying to bust your chops or anything but your battery cover photo looks like the illustration in the CAUTION-forcing the battery cover on when improperly seated can break the battery cover handout (check your box). The caption reads "Small gap, battery cover improperly seated". Just sayin...

@muunch He is packing a little chip of wood to help with packaging (like packing peanuts).

It is normal for it to instantly turn after setting overdrive amount.

That's as flush as it gets. Perhaps it wasn't in that picture but, in this one, that's as good as it will get.

Thanks for pointing that out.

@paytonpenn thanks.

Seemed like it was but I just wanted to confirm
