I'm sure we all know this one already. But given what is happening in Uganda, the new law pending in the state of AZ, the state of affairs in Russia, etc, it must be remembered now. First, non-poetic version is attributed to Martin Niemoller, but it is the poeticized version below most people know and that is on display at the US Holocaust Museum.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

“I think people need to be educated to the fact that marijuana is not a drug.
Marijuana is an herb and a flower.
God put it here.
If He put it here and He wants it to grow,
what gives the government the right to say that God is wrong?”
~ Willie Nelson

"Since everything God created is good,
we should not reject any of it,
but receive it with thanks."

"Alone I came into the world. Alone I shall go from it."

From a collection of anonymous poems written by Irish monks from the 8th through the 13 centuries. 10 of the poems were translated by various authors for American composer Samuel Barber's great work, "Hermit Songs." This quote comes from last line of the last song, "The Desire for Hermitage." The poem was translated by Sean O Faolain.

"Are you a storyteller?"

"I was, once."

"And you gave it up? Ah, that is as sad a tale in three words as any you might have told me. But a life without a tale is like a sea without salt. How do you live?"

"I live."

"Another? In two words, a story sadder than the first. Say no more -- with one word you will make me weep.”

I long to feel what they felt.

Malaclypse the Younger from the Principia Discordia. HAIL ERIS!

“The Initiate must be totally naked, to demonstrate that he is truly a human being and not something else in disguise like a cabbage or something.”

"I may be crazy but it doesn't mean I'm wrong. I'm mad but not ill."

“All statements are true in some sense, false in some sense, meaningless in some sense, true and false in some sense, true and meaningless in some sense, false and meaningless in some sense, and true and false and meaningless in some sense.”

And more seriously, from the Lotus Sutra:

" I see heirs of the buddha, in search of the buddha path,
who have the power of perseverance, and patiently endure
those of excessive pride, who abuse them verbally and physically."

"Nirvana is a state of pure blissful knowledge... It has nothing to do with the individual. The ego or its separation is an illusion. Indeed in a certain sense two "I"'s are identical namely when one disregards all special contents — their Karma. The goal of man is to preserve his Karma and to develop it further... when man dies his Karma lives and creates for itself another carrier."

"There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda.… You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning.…

And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave.…

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."

A hopeful passage, though tinged with sadness. When I was living in the midwest it made me miss Northern California tremendously. Rather timeless quote, I should say.

Childhood is Hell,
Life is Hell,
Love is Hell,
School is Hell,
Work is Hell.

Teacher: “Brazzaville is the capital of what country?"

Bongo: My name is Little Bongo,

I sing my little song-go.

Whenever I get called upon

the teacher says I'm wrong-go.

My name is little Bongo

I love to play ping pong-go.

I have an ear upon my head

They say it's very long-go.

Teacher: "Anyone?"

Bongo: My name is little Bongo

I'm known as a ding-dong-go.

There's just one place that I'd belong..."That would be the Congo."

“WAR is a racket. It always has been.
It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious.
It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.”
