My name's Haiden and I recently received $3,000 from my institution (Wentworth Institute of Tech.) to design & develop a premium, portable and dual-use / dual-chamber (concentrate & flower) vaporizer for medical cannabis patients.

I am in the final stretch of my senior year to receive a Bachelors in Industrial or Product Design. Fortunately, I am also pursuing this as my senior thesis topic as well. So basically, my school is paying for, evaluating, facilitating and mentoring me along this incredible journey of design in a subject i'm deeply passionate about.

I pitched the concept (which I won't go into too much detail for IP reasons) at our college's fairly new startup accelerate program. Since i'm the Founder and CEO of the company, I pitched to a panel of industry professional judges, similar to shark tank, for hope of approval and receiving the $3,000 our team asked for so we could design and develop our prototype. It was the riskiest pitch and most controversial the program has ever seen, and the first cannabis related thesis topic the school has ever approved. Wentworth is notorious for being very conservative. They loved it.

Our team consists of myself, a second industrial designer, an electro-mechanical engineer (who is also pursuing this topic as his senior thesis for the next 6 months) and an MBA in business who is a patient and has 10 years in the business & financial industry.

So, why am I sharing this?

I felt it necessary to share, even if from my lens, how much of a visceral change is occurring in the perception of cannabis. If an institution, who deals with busting students constantly for cannabis, and who's job it is to actively stop the promotion of it's use, can acknowledge the power of design in the medical cannabis and how much stigma can be lessened, I think it's a great sign for the rest of the typically conservative industry. We are pushing the development of a product of a much higher level of quality currently seen on the market, and that is necessary for change of perception.

That's not the only reason I share this short story, I share it because I want feedback from you guys. We have a very qualified team, with time to dedicate to a really fantastic vaporizer. The more input we can receive from the world of users and experienced vaporents, the better. I thought building a relationship this way to start would be the way to go. (I'm a bit of a noob here.)

Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks for reading. :)

Salutations Haiden92,

Hummm...

Could this mean that someone is finally considering a "Bi-Energy" design!?...

:science:

Dual chambers? Oh please tell me the auxiliary one is meant to generate moisture, in order to compensate for the harsh dryness of slow electric vaporizers! Or at the very least that this supplemental chamber will add a "Boost" feature or else!...

Cool project. Is the goal to bring your product to market? Because if that's the case, you'll need a lot more than 3 grand. Sounds like a crowdsourced funding campaign would be a good option in the future.

Best of luck and keep us informed on your progress

Thank you! The $3,000 is essentially just gap funding. It will be enough for us to prove the idea but definitely not a production model. We plan to take this to indiegogo.com once we have the prototype fully worked out. We chose the school route because we had nothing to lose and wanted to test the system. It was much more accepted by the school than I anticipated..

The other chamber is actually for concentrates, meaning you could "Boost" your flower vaping with hits of oils as well, or use either exclusively. Harsh dryness not included ;)

What kind of power source and heat type do you plan to use? Conduction, convection, etc.

Our current prototype is geared at achieving convection, but we have a conduction plan for fallback. The conduction heating would be done using a similar heating element to PAX (thin-film) but with a different application.

Also, it will be powered by Li-On batteries.

I'll be watching this thread too, just please keep in mind don't sacrifice quality ever. Take lessons from the herbalizer team.

Also take notes on how to treat your customers or "early adapters". FC has see far too much of these folks getting neglected!

@Haiden92 - how do you get past the Cannabis being a schedule 1 drug, that makes all paraphernalia illegal?

Or has something changed?

We currently plan to only sell & distribute this device / cartridge in states that allow it. Ultimately, we may have to go the aromatherapy route with any online sales, but regardless we will be courteous of every state's import/export laws. Change is happening fast so we can only hope this will be an issue for just a short time longer.

We are doing everything we can to not sacrifice that. We don't want to use the word "premium" lightly, as it is truly what we are striving for. Being designers & leading the project with design as the main priority has led this project in a much different direction than a typical vaporizer development would go. Design can lead engineering.

Definitely will keep early adapters informed and in the loop as much as possible. I see this as a repository for fantastic feedback and understanding users who can empathize with what we are trying to change, and that is incredibly valuable. I want to make it worth everyone's while, and keep as many people happy as possible. The customers (maybe you guys) and their input are what make ideas like this happen. So thank you for keeping an eye on us. :)

:)

Can you elaborate on "design as the main priority"? I see design as the combination of form and function: function w/out form is just plain ugly and form w/out function is a paperweight.

I think most prototypes are created with "design as the main priority". However, oftentimes when it comes to actually manufacturing that product, some of that design (be it form or function), is cut out to save on costs. That's the difference between a concept car and the production model you can find at a dealership.

Except for that we don't know much about the vaporizer yet. There must be a prototype at least, since there is a picture of it, already, you can see here

I'm surprised you marketed it as a Cannabis vaporizer and not a vaporizer for tobacco use or for other legal herbs. The fact that you didn't and you still got funding from your college is simply awesome!

I mean, Cannabis isn't legal in Boston, correct?

@Haiden92 - do you have a software weenie on your team? and electrical engineer to do the circuit board design and layout?

i suggest that medical patients should not have to "learn" how to use a cannabis medical device. the learning curve (of how to use the device most efficiently/effectively) should be non-existent. ... it can be programmed in.

aaah, haven't seen the post...
however, I find it pretty strange to tell this story, but telling nothing about the actual vaporizer. Very odd introduction, imho.

All right, i'm quite curious to read about that!!

Actually when i wrote about a [Boost] button i refered to having a variable amount of convection vs conduction/radiation heat:

...it will be powered by Li-On batteries.

Extended battery management?

...

What about bio-feedback via WiFi?!

We might be having some fun here somehow... At least it's nice to talk!

We really thought, why not try? We didn't have much to lose, and we all cared enough about it to put a really solid effort into our pitch and presentation.
It helps that it's a really pivotal moment right now for the medical & recreational industry but we marketed it solely for medical, which is legal in Boston and greater MA. If we marketed it for anyone it would have most definitely been a different story.

Convincing them to allow me to do it for my senior thesis was actually more difficult than receiving the funding, as I had to convince the entire faculty to be on board. I'm really happy with how things have turned out.

Here's our new office space, at school. :)

Hi there, I'm Haiden, the guy on the right up there.

Let me just clear some things up about the prototype and where things are at in the development.

The model you see above was meant to be purely a "looks like, feels like" model. Meaning it was just supposed to convey scale and appearance, to help give our pitch a boost and sell the concept in a compelling way, (meaning a dual chamber device). That design was our first attempt but not the final, as we are in development of it currently. Since the project is my design thesis, as well as our engineers, we are working hand in hand, with our other designer as well, to finalize the design within 2-3 weeks from now.

I will say, the level of fit and finish, as well as the aesthetic will certainly be preserved for the final design.

On a side note, I would be happy to start a new account under the company and product name and represent it in that way. Would this be useful for creating an organized thread to discuss things further?

Thanks for the post and the kind words as well, we love hearing all this support. It really validates what we are trying to achieve.
