I am thinking of this really intently. I was going to start out with an arbor press and upgrade later to the dake press. Would the same plates work for both presses?
Yes, the same plates should work for both..

Not all arbor presses are the same, but a 1-2 ton arbor plate should fit on the drake.

So this last week of heavy pressing, I have been noticing some slop in my Bolton vise when I try to loosen it up.

I popped off the end shaft cap and I do not like what I am seeing. It appears to me that the shaft has worn about half way through the movable jaw itself. I could be wrong here, but something has turned to powder.

I think I bought this vise about 9 months ago and have not lubed it since the initial grease job. This may be my fault but I dunno.

I am sorry to say, I can no longer recommend the Bolton vise due to the massive wear seen below.

I am looking for a replacement vise now.

Here is a better pic of the wear. Thinking back, I do not believe that I have lubricated this area of the vise.

I took it to work and tig welded the snot out of it, ground it down and brought it back to life.

It's mild steel rod that I quenched when hot to make it harder. It should look like this.
Anyone using a Bolton vise should add some grease here ASAP!

Plates arrived today and are beautiful. I look at each part and the design just makes so much sense from a strength and non heat transfer point of view. I just keep holding them and looking at them. I am supposed to get my arbor press next week and will post assembly pics and of course my first press of rosin! Thanks Joel. Instead of buying someone else's machine, I get to craft my own with handcrafted custom plates. The 2" size is going to be perfect for my personal use.

Joel what about using a nylon or other hard plastic bushing in between the shaft and vise? It would really help with metal to metal contact and could be replaced when it wears out.

It would have to be very thin and the same size as this nub on the shaft in this pic I am not sure it would survive but it's worth trying for sure.

Really though, I think if I would have lubed it from the start, it would not have warn out like it did. It was powder dry inside.

After the repair, I did squish a bit this weekend and I looked for wear afterwards. It was holding up fine with some grease. Time will tell.

I just noticed some black powder underneath my vice the other day.

Is that end cap hard to remove? I remember thinking I should live it when I first got it but scratched my head at it for a few mins before getting impatient to squish some flowers haha.

Out of the country right now but will look to lube that up this weekend and give it a whirl.

Did a double press of a 2 month cured huckleberry Kush v3 at 210F. The flavor was off the charts, better than any Other hash I have made. And it only took 20 minutes to heat the plates and 5 minutes to squish the nugs.
I am overjoyed for it to be this easy. I love the plate design and will be showing my stuff off on Instagram. Can't wait for fresh nugs in 1.5 months. Though the long cured ones were so tasty too!

Sorry, I don't use a press for making pre squish pucks. I just use my fingers to pre squish inside the parchment.

But I have used some metal tube and sockets before with a hammer and kinda thought the oil was much darker than with just finger squishing?

I assumed there was more plant matter so I have not pursued it further.

Joel just a quick question. I have been looking for a hammer press to pre-puck the flower before pressing. (0.5g) Do you know one that works well? Would you consider making one?

Honestly, I recommend just a standard pollen press. I have this exact model and it works perfectly. I pre-press up to 0.75 grams and I never get blow outs anymore. It's also helped give me much cleaner rosin with less plant matter in it.

Still loving my @Joel W. plates after months of use!

Looks like this thread is winding down a bit. :)

I am out of material right now anyways and I was wondering if I should order more or call it good here?

If anyone is still on the fence, speak up or pm me please.

In case others are like me:
It makes no sense for me to buy plates now when my stash is a few grams and has to last months and months.
BUT---in future, when my supply increases/ law changes to allow legal here or home grow, THEN I'd really like to try this!!!

So, it would be great to offer yearly, chance to get a few orders to make it worth your while IMO.....
I hope to want them "sometime"....

And hope to try this resin sometime as I'm a resin virgin here. Flavor chaser and I understand this yields some gonzo flavor.

I was thinking that if I was to move forward, like beyond my personal needs, I would want to move up to a larger press/plate size. I'm sure I'm not the only one that might be interested in a 4"/5" plate option.

It sounds like it may not make sense at this point to invest in 5" stock, but perhaps you could get a special order price together that includes a materials deposit? And if a group of three or more ordered at once?

Just spitballin' here :spliff:

I have thought about bigger plates, but the soft copper would need to be fully supported by steel or it would just bend like a banana.

It's probably not something I am going to tackle anytime soon.

PM'd Joel on Monday about some plates and he responded within 20 minutes said he could have the materials Wednesday and would ship out this weekend. Well he PM'd me Wednesday morning to say e got the materials in and just 12 hours later he had tracking up for a Monday delivery! I can't commen on quality or anything of the like since I haven't actually sent them yet, but as far as customer service goes Joel is top notch
