I was obsessively watching the video last night where Dr. Collie shows how he crafts the heater. To my eyes, it does not look like the insulation goes inside the ceramic tube, but it gets pretty damn close. looked to me like the crimp connector goes about halfway into the tube, with the other half hanging out of the tube and attached to the wire. insulation appears to start right where the crimp connector ends. I would think that the insulation is definitely getting warmed up, just from being inside the head, but I don't think it is in contact with the ceramic tube. I'm curious about exactly where the intake ports terminate inside the head.
regarding flavor, I still think its quite pure, and very good. there is some loss compared to a smaller piece, or direct draw off something like the minivap. but I think if you are getting muted flavor, at least part of that can be attributed to the size of the bong. or you just need to put more herb in there
I will say that it does seem to change pretty quickly when I go too hot or too cold. there is definitely a sweet spot for me, and it has taken some trial and error to dial in. right now I'm starting at 11.5V and letting it settle at 10.7V. there is a pretty big difference between 11.0 and 11.5V. I would prefer more granular adjustment.
which brings me to the issue of the power supply... I noticed some inconsistent performance on my Vapbong after a week or so. Did some investigating and noticed that the heater actually turned of and on when I wiggled the power cord
also the barrel plug on the power supply wire was getting hot. I tested the heater for continuity and it seemed fine. held around 4 ohms as I wiggled it around. so I turned my attention to the power supply barrel plug. I cut it open and found that the ground wire had a really shitty connection to the exterior of the barrel plug. just the tiniest bit of solder holding it on there, and it had been overheating. so I replaced the barrel plugs on both the power supply and the Vapbong with different connectors, and now it's running like a champ. totally consistent performance, and the connectors are not even getting warm.
so that's not great. but there was nothing wrong with the Vapbong. something to look out for if you feel the barrel plug getting hot though. FWIW, I did let AoV know about the bad power supply
