Bill Maher....

I really enjoy watching Real Time and more often than not, agree with Bill....but there are times where Bill takes things too far for me. I cringe every time he does one of his Trump fucks his daughter jokes. Occasionally he takes on a republican position or event that has gone too far and then states a position that is equally or more divisive and I can actually taste the hypocrisy.

Bill himself has said that people get their news from shows on Fox and Real Time and some of his humor deliberately sets out to inflict injury via his comedy so the 'lighten up...it's comedy' isn't always excusable IMO.

For those who might say that he's no more extreme than some of those Fox shows....I don't disagree BUT I thought the point was not lowering yourself to that same level. Especially if you hold yourself up to being more enlightened.

Just to be clear....it's only the mean spirited humor I take offense to. There are way more non-mean spirited jokes and discussions on the show.

I also don't like the jokes about Ivanka suggesting something inappropriate happened between her and her dad. That turns people off then they arent open to the more important issues that are talked about such as energy and climate change. Maher can bring issues to the younger crowd that don't watch current events. There's a reason he's on HBO and no longer on with main broadcasting companies such as ABC or NBC.

I love Stephen Colbert's political humor. He can be mean in a sweet way and get away with it.

I notice as comedians get older they are not as cautious with their humor. Remember the late great George Carlin? His whole comedy was being pissed off. The older he got the more pissed off he got. I sure miss him especially now. He would be pretty old.

The irony for me is that comedians like Andrew Dice Clay can easily spout way more offensive wording without venturing into that mean spirited hateful undertone.

I've been watching bill for long time now, and was pissed when abc canceled his network show. But imo he's just not as edgy or as interesting as he used to be. His opinions seem more reactive than proactive these days. Bill used to be firmly against the war machine, now he seems to be all about supporting war crimes as long as they're against the 'wrong' kind of brown people, that believe in the 'wrong' God. Maybe he's had to make compromises as his audience grew larger, or maybe he's just grown more conservative/fearful (same thing imo) as he's grown older himself. Maybe I'm the one who's changed; maybe it's all of the above.

What most people don't understand is Bill Maher is actually one of the Neo-Cons (which is why I linked A Very Heavy Agenda). He was more subtle about it in the past; but Vice has run some government propaganda (some stories about protests in russia that didn't happen).

Vice has been running more bits about protests in Russia and trying to show the Russian Government as weak; like there's an up and coming kid who can take putin's spot.

I need to stop watching Real time. I kinda wish I lived in California so I could see Jimmy Dore Live; been watching some of the cuts he releases to youtube. He Had Congressman Ro Khanna in it; quite enjoyable to see a Berniecrat in office and talk.

No Cable TV; I don't have a TV anymore and I just really can't stand the lies that the press makes. Might as well put my head in the sand if i I was going to read that crud.

I dislike almost all "political humor" , because IMO it's just pushing an agenda and uses the guise of comedy to belittle people and tout their opinion as superior.

Political pundit shows do this too but they are explicit in it. Political humor shows are explicit in it too if you actually think about them, but they are a bit less explicit.

I will never watch The Daily Show again. Not into hearing some South African rip on Trump voters and then hide under "hahaha it's just a joke!!" Same with Samantha Bee, John Oliver, etc. (none of them are even Americans lol why should I put any stock into their perspective when they just call me dumb and worth being laughed at?) Colbert used to be good and I like him to an extent but he does same thing. Bill does too and I probably like him the best but still would rather watch Tucker lol he is arguably funnier.

I guess my issue with comedy political shows is they call themselves unbiased but they are all left wing lol, it's why conservatives have success in radio market because left has television.

I would welcome a comedy politics show that goes against the grain and is not left. It would be doing same thing don't get me wrong, but consider the market. bit oversaturated. I'm aware that my bias causes me to be critical of their content but they are all biased as well and objectively not even funny. Top 10 comedians none of them are even scratching my list

That political humor is Dennis Miller he's a right wing comedian @HellsWindStaff. I say each to their own fav brand of comedy. We are all different. My husband and a friend actually went to see Dennis Miller and Bill O'Rielly.

I think our political humor is open season on whoever wants to comment IMO, even if they aren't from America. A different perspective on things.

I really enjoy the Stephen Colbert show now with the Trump humor than ever before. I miss the Jon Stewart Show. I never warmed up to the other guy. The primaries is when Colbert started getting good.

I was watching the the Correspondance Dinner Comedy event that was on CNN Saturday. Trump chose not to go. He went to a rally with all his supporters. Parts of it was good with Woodward and Bernstein about corruption in the administration. Talking about that the news media needs to get it right with their comments. Some of the biting humor I didn't like from a comedian Hasan Minhaj. He talked about Trump tweeting at 3:00AM and he's not even drunk, that was kinda funny.

Trump is a pretty bizarre president with lots of weird stuff going on surrounding him. Some funny but really scary too. With his bad mannered comments about others or everyone, he deserves everything they throw at him.

I liked dennis before he became a partisan hack. I don't have television either so I find a stream online. On appletv/youtube, sometimes I stream hbo through prime/xbox, sometimes I use other methods :brow:

I agree dore is a pretty good match for us independent democratic progressive populist socialists

Better than the neo-cons and the neo-libs anyhoo; same political shit-spin, different day :zombie:

I have never heard of that guy, but I looked into him and he looks up my alley thank you for suggestion; two things I noticed tho a) he's a yinzer :) and b) he seems to have had his most success in radio though I was just doing some cursory browsing.

funny you mentioned that, the WH dinner. I saw a funny quip from a blogger I forget who, "Fair to say the Muslim comedian bombed his set"  I think humor like that is funny, Dave Chappelle politically incorrect humor like that IMO is some of the funniest, different strokes for different folks :)

Totally agree, although he is a neo-liberal (their interest align with the neo-cons on almost everything foreign policy wise).

Although at this point, I'd believe it if he was a secret Muslim recruiter. The only times I want to start praying 5 times a day is after I see Bill Maher rant about why my religion is worse than the rest of em.

Not Bill Maher related, so not sure if warranted in this thread, but it speaks to my earlier point too good to not share.

Did anyone see Colbert say "the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin's cock holster." referring to Trump ??

I guess it's true that homophobic statements have become normalized under Trump. If any TV host said this about Obama they'd be packing their things up and out the door by days end. Hell, if Trump said this, he'd get crucified.

This just is an exemplary example of my problem with political "comedians" so wanted to share it. The punchline is he's gay?......hilarious! /s

Or was being gay supposed to be a snarky insult? Either way it's a shit statement that wouldn't have flied a year ago.

They don't hold themselves to the standards they hold for everyone else. I hope he gets called on this (he won't)

Trump deserves everything the comedians throw at him. He has been so disrespectful to almost everybody. Every type of person except people like himself he has disrespected. Plus he is a habitual liar. He is a gift for the comedians.

Trump needs to start reading up on history, and what it says in the bills that he is trying to pass. He keeps tripping himself up and those around him have to scramble to cover for him. This last one about Andrew Jackson was the cherry on the cake for the comics.

Our law makers are open season for the comedians and that includes the president, it always has been.

Yeah, Carol....while this is the height of comity, do you think: ""the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin's cock holster." referring to Trump??"

I'm sorry, but I don't see any angels in this deal at all....on either side.

May not have been a gay comment as much as a subservient comment. Colbert has been pretty supportive of gay rights.
I find Maher's style to be way less sensitive, but it's not hard to cull the entertainment out of either of them.
