@HD Springer : I just gave it a shot, because it was long overdue and Sticks reminded me to try it recently, but hm, yes it worked, but it was clearly more wispy than usual and I couldn't really say it tasted better.
As I expected and noted in my previous "experiments", whenever the bowl holes are not fully covered, the vapor/air ratio is sub-optimal and the vapor feels lighter. Note that I don't use glass flowers, and the entire "puck technic" only works if the flat disc of material completely covers the bottom of the bowl and especially the air intake holes.
I got vapor but it wasn't as satisfying as usual, and by reflex I opened the bowl and tamped the bud mid-session to improve things a bit and it kinda worked.
As for the taste I don't know. I grind by tearing the bud with my fingers one minute before consuming it, so I don't think any of the flavors and terpenes have time to escape or get spoiled. It might be different if you have a large mechanical grinder and prepare some quantity beforehand. I'm not convinced that you can really destroy the smell by just tearing the bud apart with your fingers. It releases it though, so if you let it sit in your grinder for several hours it's clear you'll lose something.
Overall even if I might try it again "for Science", I think this method works best with convection vaporizers.
