All --

Let's take all of the 3D convo to the 3D thread.

Yes, this is discussion about potential mods to *this* device. But A) this thread is about USAGE of the Ascent , B) we have already addressed here that there are some cool potential usages but we don't know much beyond that, C) there is a thread for that kind of theoretical discussion, D) I think other, non-Ascent-people might benefit from this (we've already have a few come in with ideas or requests), and E) for those people visiting this thread to learn how to use the device, a lot of discussion about theoretical items doesn't help -- Let's publish findings in this thread when we have something really cool.

I go 2 flowers, herb, flowers, more herb. Slight pack down, 2-3 flowers to top it off. Use 0.5 herb. Start off at 390, for 4 hits, go to 410 for 4 or so, then 430 for rest.

Holy crap! That's a lot of product. I've gotten verrrrrry long sessions off of a fraction of that. But I sip...

I am afraid if I go lower temperatures I won't get any vapor, I like vapor and my GF is a huge fan.

Do me a favor. Do an entire session at 350. Heck, 320! Okay, I tried 300°F the other night.

Although the effects will be different (I include things like clouds or kind of medication here.) I think you might rethink this fixation of visible vapor.

Then you can load the temp you like, and reload the GF at the temp she likes.... Or better yet... "His 'n' Hers Ascents"?
:)

@nigel just did a session at 350, great tip. I enjoyed it. I'm out of herb until tomorrow I just did it was a 0.4 pack. Gonna try it again tomorrow. Thanks!,!,

Play the Limbo game... "How loooow can you goooo?" You would be surprised. :)

Now the effects will be different than at 430°F, but the point here is to loose the notion of fixating on visible vapor. Once you have proven yourself that you don't need it, then try ramping back up to the higher temps to find the effect you like.

PS: if the ABV is spent at 350°F, there is still stuff to recover >350°F. Perhaps your wife would like that. :)

How about some SUS balls? There's ball bearings in our bicycle tire hubs, skate boards......

http://www.craigballsales.com/aisi-440c-stainless-steel-balls-5-32-diameter-lot-of-500.html

Metal balls would need an ISO soak and/or burning off any machine oil.
That's actually not a bad idea. I like it, but will wait to hear back from others. I know stainless steel is not a good conductor of heat. Wonder if there's a similar product in brass or copper...

Fun idea. At one point I was going to try BBs ("Steel air rifle shot" for those taking notes, the stuff you combine with a Daisy Red Rider to shoot you eye out.....).

Most are copper plated steel (Daisy brand is zinc IIRC). I was thinking they are cheap and a magnet would pull them from the AVB.

Yeah, I was going to wash them first too.....good practice that, even if much of our bud grows in nasty old dirt......

Careful now!

You just called @OF an "idiot" for complaining about my breaking things...

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Yeah, the bid difference is you were right.......

My last complaint and oh ya I'm sorry @nigel I didn't meant to be so harsh. Anyway, my last complaint is, my high never last that long, and honestly my herb starts tasting burnt very quickly. I go 2 flowers, herb, flowers, more herb. Slight pack down, 2-3 flowers to top it off. Use 0.5 herb. Start off at 390, for 4 hits, go to 410 for 4 or so, then 430 for rest. Am I overheating? My girlfriend and I usually get 12-14 hits per session, using my method described and around 0.5-0.7g of herb. Is this normal? What can I do different? I feel that my session are too quick, herb doesn't taste good for more then 4 hits, and high doesn't last that long. I am afraid if I go lower temperatures I won't get any vapor, I like vapor and my GF is a huge fan.

My thoughts were the same as @nigel - try at a lower temp! I start at 360 and work up to 400 - I never go above 400. Sounds to me like you were burning up all your meds in those first 4 puffs at 390!

I get a solid 20 minute session on 0.3 (glass flowers to take up space).

Aside from the bug at 400F (Seems when my unit is running for 5+ minutes, when I try to increase to 400F, it sticks at 397F).

Heck I start at 320 and as long as I am getting taste, which at that temp is fantastic. I can get long sessions off 0.25g.

I once felt your pain, my gf and I are big vapor fans. She actually bought me the ascent for valentine's day (girlfriend of the year?) when we first started using it we didn't get any vapes it was very disappointing, different buds vape different ways. But I then realized that it needs to be touching at all times, but I didn't know about flowers.

I read to pack it down very tightly and take long, soft draws with 20-30 seconds in between hits to build back up. From there we got massive vapes, we would usually start around 350 or so and the flavor would last a good 6-8 hits. The reason your flavor isn't lasting is because you're starting at too high of a temp and the flavonoids are basically being flash vaped within two hits. You can go as low as 330 and get great flavor, you won't see as thick of vapes but you're getting something. Start low and work your way up, it's a mighty fine process. Hope this helps.

Ok, I can confirm there is a major bug in my unit (@Davinci_vaporizer)

The problem exists in my 1AA1 Burl model, but I know others have the issue as well (@farcus2323 claims he's had 4 different units, and all 4 exhibited the issue). When my unit has been running for 5+ minutes and I am still running in the 360's, when I move it up to 395 - it got stuck around 385F. Tried bumping it to 400F - still no change. Power cycled the unit, temperature climbed to 398F, but would not register 400F on the screen even though I set that temp!

This happens pretty much every session now, unless I let the unit cool down a bit, then try setting temp immediately to a temp desired above 400F.

Definitely considering an RMA in the future.....

Delta3DStudios,
Question my friend had a idea too, put a blunt roach into the chamber! Anyone done this? Bad idea, good idea? If not, my friend and I are going to try it tomorrow see how it goes, I'll let everyone know! Might even try a few roaches in there!

@Tony Hemp how do you pack and use flowers? Take me step by step through process and how much herb you use on sessions you do at 350 and get good cloud vapor?

Man first and foremost, I got my carbon fiber in on Saturday and I charged it up fully. Still doing my burn ins, the only problem I've noticed so far is that I hear a sizzle sound the entire time the unit is on. I've only used it on 430 maybe it will be different on a lower temp.

This was my step by step when I had my stealth ascent. I would grind my flower with a sharpstone grinder, it doesn't make it super fine at all kind of a medium grind. I pack about 0.2-0.3 in at a time if it's just me and my gf. I put it in and use a metal pen to pack it down super super tight I mean so friggin tight. I usually start at about 350 and get about 4-6 good flavor hits then bump it up to 365 then I kind of judge it from there whether I should stop at 375 or bump it up to 415. I tried a personal vape cycle, I started at 365 then 375 then 395 and got great vapes from that but would have to sometimes turn it back on and bump it up to 430 to max it out.

I realized that 375 was a pretty great temp to ride out with. You can start as low as 330 and get a lot of flavor hits but to get great thick vapes 375 and up is the way to go.

My sweet spot is 160C/320F. I think of this as kinda low on the temp spectrum.

What was 149C/300F like? I assume you hardly saw any vapor. How about the effects? Were they subtle, or did they pack a punch? And did you get much flavor?

I may have to get high by getting even lower!

I think FC must be broken as no one is posting.
:)

I used to think 320°F was kinda low too. (You'll start getting CBD and Δ-9 at that point, and CBG well before that point).

Going even further down, you drop the CBD and THC, but there are a few flavonoids and terpenoids down that low so you'll certain get a portion of the flavor profile. But certainly no punch and hardly any vapor. But it is a pleasant effect. Calm and relaxing with negligible impairment.

When you are done, you can set aside the (partially)ABV for a session another time. I keep a series of Jyarz for different max temp points, knowing the compounds that are volatile above the point that is labeled in the jar can be used another time when I want that effect.

This is my first post, but I have been watching the thread since December.

I sent my defective ascent back to Davinci and the tracking indicated that it arrived Friday. I have not heard anything from Davinci, how long until most replacements are shipped out?

Thanks!

Usually takes about 2 weeks from return to replacement.

Hi guys!

Just an update - does anyone else have a problem around 400F and above which the temperature won't heat up beyond 397/398? It seems after a 5-minute session when I crank the temp up to 400, it won't do it! I have to turn off the unit and allow it to cool down before finishing off my session!

Really plan to keep a close watch on this thread and will be requesting an RMA once 1.2 hit's the market.

Guess I should start shopping for a backup vape..... Sigh, I knew this was going to happen.

Hopefully the ascent doesn't kick the bucket before 1.2 is released!

I haven't had any problems going past 400 F. No problems with temp settings at all.

I have the stealth unit. I have had this unit for almost 5 months. Sometimes I go as high as 410. I start out between 385 and 395 depending on the herb, then I work my way up. Too harsh, I turn down the temp. I've been having great vapor and taste.

Very interesting. My unit is still 'functional' - and rarely ever go to 410F - but I would like the option to go there if I wanted. I will certainly request an RMA once the next version is released

That's pretty cool. I save my ABV, but just throw it all in one jar (mixing it up with each addition) regardless of what strain or how spent it is. It eventually gets used for edibles or, in a rare emergency, to (can I even utter "the 'S' word" here?) smoke.

Then again, I usually just keep my Ascent on 375 and don't experiment much with temperature. I haven't found anything to be gained (IME) going any higher. I suppose I do experience lower temps incidentally, if I don't wait long enough before taking the first hit, or between hits.

With all this talk about lower temperature experiences I might have to try some more experimenting. It would be nice to find a good setting that makes me feel good but with minimal impairment. This would be especially good for daytime medication.

did i miss something?? i thought i followed this thread pretty closely but don't recall a new version being released

There has been talk of a v1.2 - though I don't know if it's officially announced. I don't know if it will be official, or they continue to use the 1AA1 designation, and modify the design. I believe @Davinci_vaporizer has mentioned there is still an issue with units dying after a month+ of use (either unit won't charge, or it turns on, but temperature readout is stuck in the 70's and won't heat up). The root cause appears to be related to the 2 wires going through the hinge to the oven. One cable used for charging, the other cable is used for heating the unit.

Wouldn't that be three wires (or, more likely pairs - anyway, three functions) - Charging, Heating, and Temperature Sensing?

(edit)
Actually, upon further thought, it is likely four conductors total - one each for charge, heater, and temp, plus a common return or "ground".

Logically, yes, I was merely passing along the information as I read it. I don't remember which post or site I read it on, but they specifically mention '2 wires' - don't know if they mean 2 pairs or 2 wires, but yes, there should be at least 4 conductors going through that hinge.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen anyone brave enough to disassemble their Ascent to see what the internals look like - I've only seen shots of under the mouthpiece (all you can see is the top of the 2 batteries, not much else).

Also, does anyone have issues with their screen lens? It feels like the bottom portion of my lens has come slightly unglued, with minimal pressure I can feel the bottom of the lens flex away from the body. I'm afraid to apply pressure to the top portion of the lens for fear of it coming completely loose.

Like I said before, I like my Ascent, but the build quality is lacking at this point. My advice to all my friends thinking about the Ascent is the same - wait a few months for the bugs to get worked out.
