My bowl of the Ascent is stained, and the unit smells like loco weed. So I'll be in deep you know what if I have to send my unit back for any reason. I have a black stealth, should I be nervous? I hope not.

My unit has been working like a trooper, it's been my favorite portable on the go vape. Knock on wood....

Can always use the vacuum sealer from the kitchen. Then maybe a little bit of essential oil or wax candle in the package to make it smell okay in there.

I'd probably even overnight it to make sure it's not sitting anywhere too long.

I have been loving my Ascent, I started just putting it on 430 right of the get go, and just taking pulls to keep moderating the temperature since I saw the photos of how much the temp drops. Was getting good clouds, just sessions were kind of short, great high though! Anyway this morning the worst thing every happened, My Ascent will not heat up, Will turn on and will charge, But when turned on it stays at 62, or 67, or 72, or 77.....Then does not move. I have tried it standing up, holding it, plugged into charger and not plugged it. :( :( ....This is already my 3rd Ascent! :( I am going to ask for a different model his time, Any suggestions? Also what is best shipping method? Sucks because finally, my glass flowers came today :(

Well I read this today and was like man that sucks, on the third one and my first stealth has been running like a champ. Granted it's only 3 weeks old, well I just loaded up a chamber for ceremonial 4:20 tokings and I now have the same exact problem. It won't heat up, it's just stuck at room temperature. I'm very angry about this because the unit came straight from davinci and isn't a month old. I can't understand why a different outside case should matter so much for performance or reliability. Now I have to be without my brand new ascent to wait for this whole exchange process ggrrrr

Silly idea: have you tried the stop heating function - pressing the settings and temp down buttons?!

Osn Dosn,
I tried pressing them at the same time, i tried pressing the setting button then the down button, I have held all three buttons. Damnit, I am going to have to go without my baby forever now, this exchange process blows. But, I am a little excited that I will be getting a new model. How do I go about that? Should I let them know that I want a new one before I ship it? Do I just say I want a new one, Should I explain that I am on my third stealth and that is why I want a new one?

Contact the company you bought it from. Explain what happened and you need a RMA#. Good luck with that. Hope it doesn't take too long to get a new one.

Are you saying that they've repaired and shipped back the same one twice already?

No funny story, I purchased one from a local head shop in November, I did not know how to use it, I was trying to pull too hard, I wastes so much herb and I thought it wasn't working. I was getting no vaper. I took it back they gave me a new one. Second one, same probelm but again, it was because I did not know
How to hit it correctly. Finally figured it out, then it just stopped turning on. So then exchanged that with Davinci, now this happened to that one. So this is my third stealth, I am getting a different model.

I got my carbon from davinci once my stealth went. I just asked in email nicely and over the phone. Once u get used to the technique ascent it's awesome. I still say there's a way to make the ascent into a bag system especially with an open grill design :) I made a bag works well except I have to blow into the grill to fill it up, definitely doable. Just saying.

Tip for everyone who was worried about having to send there Ascent back, and worried about the smell. I cleaned mine pretty thoroughly with ISO, cotton balls, and q-tips. I then put my ascent in a sandwich bag, inside of another sandwich bag, inside yet ANOtHER sandwich bag. This is clearly not difficult to do and just wanted to post and let everyone know that is what I just did withy defective stealth, sending it off for a Carbon Fiber Model today. Wish me luck, hope bags will decrease chance of letting out any smell X)

Hey all,

Haven't popped in here in a hot minute, so wanted to chime in ....and say hi.

We realize there are still some issues floating around, ie the abundance of air in some units and the sudden death of others. We are of course working diligently to make improvements to any and all issues. To expedite the repair and identification of the problems, we flew in one of the factory engineers and he's been here, pulling apart units and reporting back on a daily basis.

In case anyone's curious, the causation of the unit to stop working is still that little wire that runs from the heat bowl to the inside of the unit. Apparently, it is coming loose sometimes due to the hinge. I've been told that this has been fixed and has been tested by working the hinge 20k times. Now the air- we don't see that in all units, mostly it's due to tolerances in the glass- not the unit, but nonetheless, it's an issue so we are always working on improving this.

I'm still excited when I read about people experimenting in fun ways with their Ascent, I never thought to use the GoG adapter as a mouthpiece...guess what I'm gonna try tonight? After I get off the phone with the factory of course...no rest for the wicked here.

Found this forum after I bought my Ascent (stealth) the other day and wish I would have found it before. :|
I was torn between the Arizer Solo and the Ascent for quite sometime now, but the oils/dry combo, useable while charging and reviews were really winning me over. After a few weeks of searching I finally found both units at a local shop, so I was not about to leave empty handed. The girl there mentioned their units are the "2nd gen units that just came in from Da Vinci." She went on to talk about battery life issues w/ previous ones, etc.... Not sure if that was just bs, or actual first-production run issues from the manufacturer, which I can understand.
Upon opening my new Ascent Stealth I noticed the battery was fully charged which I thought was odd, but figured whatever and still followed the directions to juice it for 5hrs. After the first day of use I was getting a little worried since the results were less than optimal, but after a bit of tinkering I think I found my liking. 400-405F was yielding the strongest results with multiple draws & no foul/burnt taste for me personally. However, the unit definitely had a plastic smell & taste when I first opened it. I wiped it down lightly w/ some IA&water and then turned it up to max heat and let it sit for a while hoping it might help dissipate off. It did over time, but the oil jar caps smelt fricking awful.

I tried some different consistencies and found a few turns in the grinder was plenty. The fine dust type makes a bit of a mess and pulls thru the glass stem with ease, and an un-ground clump of material jammed in there did not warm as evenly. I did only try once with the clump, so will have to revisit that.

My big issue right now is the 'oil' situation. I have tried it several times and think the unit just can't hit those rig temps. I have been ending up with a little pool of extremely dark liquid/tar like substance in the jar after trying. Hopefully someone else has been successful with super thick material as I would hate to have to get a separate pen. Overall I am really enjoying the transition to the vape life and this Ascent is helping that, but the oil situation is definitely bumming me out a bit.

On a side-note, it is pretty awesome that the manufacturer posted on here about the current issues. Definitely a good look

I haven't personally used oils with the ascent for it's not readily available to me. I've loved flowers in it though, even though my ascent just went out.

I can personally say the pens are much better for oils though. For some reason it can just burn it hotter and faster. It's a more direct vape. I use a seego vht skillet with glass tube on an ego-t battery. Works pretty wall with waxier stuff, not sure about oils.

Hi fellow vaporizers!

First post here, been lurking and actively reading for a couple of weeks and I wanted to thank you all for the excellent information contributed to this forum!

I too found this thread only *after* having ordered my Ascent. Needless to say I was almost sweating after reading the 150 first pages. I thought "what the Hell have I done, I don't want to be a beta tester and should have waited". Honnestly after seeing the pictures of the exposed wires in the air-path I was almost decided to send it back ASAP and get a refund...

Instead I kept it and I'm loving it so far. In fact, I love it so much I'm affraid by the idea that it could fail! Of course I also have a lot of remarks to make and some details I would like to clarify with @
Davinci_vaporizer as we have the chance to have them on-board. So this is going to be a bit long, I apologize in advance. And being not a native English speaker, I hope I will not butcher Shakespeare's tongue too much.

Introduction

For the background, and it will prove relevant for what will follow, I am a chronic heavy smoker and have been smoking daily for 16 years, 50-100g/month on average. I had two lung surgeries already and was told to quit by the doctors (even if the problems I had would surely have occurred if I didn't smoke, but let's say it did not improve my condition at all) I didn't follow their advice because my addiction is too strong (or in politically correct terms "because I need to medicate so much") but at least I managed to completely stop the cigs, excepted in my joints.

Where I live we most exclusively consume joints, mixed with various amounts of tobacco, out of cultural and product scarcity reasons. Using water pipes and bongs is really not so common and usually reserved to young people, and overall people consuming the plant using alternative ways are a minority and it's not always well accepted socially (ie. you get associated with crackheads etc pretty fast). This is important because we all have very different ways to medicate and cultural + social traditions play a big role here, and I think the Ascent might be more suited to some particular ways than others (more on that below)

I've never been a fan of large/giant and fast hits, this is not what I enjoy with the plant. I don't use it to get stone and I want the plant to affect my productivity and social life as little as possible. I tested smoking in californian glass pipes but I diskliked the pace/speed at which they force you to consume the product: it's either too fast and the load is gone in less than two minutes, or it keeps lighting off and you spend too much time messing with a lighter. I tried a bag vape once but again this does not fit my habits at all: the pace is way too fast, too strong of a hit in too little time. I like to let the pleasure last and I think I enjoy the flavors as much as I enjoy the effects, and in this regard the Ascent feels perfect to me.

Even on my joints I don't inhale too hard, I take a lot of little hits and it translated pretty well to the way the Ascent works, being a direct draw vape with almost no air-path resistance at all. I'm not saying you can't get large rips with it, I did some that made me cough (and felt like a big waste!) and I saw the vidz of the guys using the water tool adapter, so I know it surely works for that but 1) this is not the way I'm using it so I won't comment too much on that aspect, and 2) let's be honnest, I think people are expecting a little too much of this device, this is a "portable" in the first place, it will never and doesn't even pretend to compete with your wired desktop vape. Now on to the review itself.

The review

Unboxing

I ordered my Ascent Stealth (EURO version) on some Swedish online shop. Serial number: 2AE1 0009xx. Good packaging, containing user manual in English, German, French and Spanish versions. The manual itself is a bit light and could use an extra section to explain the drawing/breathing technique a little bit, but apart from that it covers the basics.

First impression after opening the box: quality. Second impression, olfactive this time: something reeks in there, it's like when you buy new taiwanese computer parts, all the inks, the plastic bags, everything in the packaging smells. More precisely I found that the faux-velvet carry pouch was the item having the worst smell. It evaporated (where?) after some days though... That leads us to the first issue, but before that, the physical inspection!

Physical QC

No trace of glue on the device, all side panels properly fixed, all alignments are good. In the Stealth version the logo is embossed inside the rubber panel so there is no way it can be misaligned on this model (as one early user reported) The hinge feels very solid. There even seems to be a magnet to assist the lock. The rubber alignment above the bowl was not perfect but by forcing on it with the thumb I was able to push it farther so it's not a problem.

I'm still a bit puzzled by the mini circuit board next to the heater element (near the charging port), it's not in the air-path but it does receive a lot of heath, I hope it will not create a failure point (I won't comment on how I wish those cables weren't there at all, as they are obviously a necessity but I really hope you DaVinci didn't source crappy wires!)

For the scratched LCD problem, the situation clearly improved. It's still not 100% perfect though, you still need to work on that DaVinci, yet it's super low priority compared to the other remaining problems. Apart from that the build is pretty impressive, feels solid, lovely to handle. A beautiful object.

Off-gassing and silicone curing (aka the first issue)

I cleaned all silicone parts with ISO and began the battery break-in cycles (3 full discharges before applying the 80% rule) by doing full temp burn-in's. As the previous poster noted, my battery also came fully charged when I received it and as the icon didn't show any charging activity I didn't bother to wait 5 hours for nothing.

The burn-in: no noticeable fumes at all even with device upside down and under all lighting conditions, I think this problem has been definitely solved. But...there is now this new silicone post-curing problem to resolve DaVinci! You really need to have all your silicon pieces post cured for a longer time in bulk at your factory and with proper ventilation! The device stinks so much during the first 4 days it really gives a bad impression to your clients. Some of your competitors advertize a factory burn-in of 48h or more to get rid of all bad smells, please consider improving this point.

I did 4 max temperature sessions in a row while blowing air through the mouthpiece as often as possible (because ventilation is primordial) In between I let it cool down in a well ventilated room. Recharged, then 5 other empty sessions, recharged, then a couple empty sessions and the smell was still present yet less overwhelming. As I was bored by blowing air through a toaster and was really eager to finally test it, I gave the device a try at that point.

Why do I care? Because as the article someone posted earlier in this thread explains, food-grade or not, silicone releases a lot of foul stuff during curing, I don't want to vape that kthx.

Where is the Sombrero, pebble or glass flower ffs?! (aka the Rising Puck issue)

As all users will notice pretty fast (but it's nowhere explained in the user manual) there are 3 reasons for vapor production to stop completely in your Ascent:

1) the puck got sucked off the bowl bottom (solution: open and push it back home or use cotton fill)
2) the bowl heating auto powered off (solution: click "option" then "plus" buttons to power on again)
3) you were so much enjoying getting vaped you didn't notice that you depleted the load (solution: refill)

The rising puck issue should be documented and we are still waiting for your custom glass accessory DaVinci. Note for people catching up the thread: "puck" because you need to compact the load in the bowl more than you think you have to, and it should make contact with the ceramic at all times otherwise vapor production stops completely.

Glass on gap on glass (aka are you vaping your circuit board issue *and* too much air issue)

DaVinci, if you had to keep only a single thing of what I say it should be this one: you did not address well enough the early user reports where the electrical wires could be seen through the air-path as well as the remark about the possibility to blow air through the device circuitry and out of the LCD/buttons. I think this put a hit on your reputation and credibility.

These reports in this thread were the reason I almost wanted a refund, I mean come on! You suspected you had a air leak issue from the beginning because you attempted to fix it when you did the modifications to the silicone bowl joints after the beta. Obviously air is not leaking from there anymore, so now it must be leaking from somewhere else.

So you advertize "glass on glass" but two pieces of glass sliding into each others doesn't make a GonG connection. We know and you hinted to it with your parts tolerance remark that the gap between the two glass straws can be variable. By the way I urge all Ascent users to try their two pairs of glass straws and find the two pieces that have the closest match (ie the smallest gap and tightest fit) as this will greatly improve the draw. But no matter what you do, there will be a gap, so air will be drawn from the silicone "chamber" where the two straws are inserted.

How do I know air is drawn from this chamber? After some use I can see resin buildup both on the inside of the bottom straw but also on the outside, that is between the straw 'cap' and the silicone holding it (aka the tunnel leading potentially to the circuit board even if you said it shouldn't... you know, where early users saw the electical wires they weren't supposed to see...) It looks airtight though, but against all odds it is not and I'm very surprised because as I said, I draw very slowly due to my habits and lungs so I really expected the air to follow the path of least resistance (the straw holes) and not flow between the straw and the silicone.

Now the 'tunnel' itself: I inspected mine closely, and can see no gap. But there seem to be indeed two distinct pieces of silicon composing it. In the best world it should be a single piece. As it is, it looks as airtight as the connection between my bottom straw and the entry of the tunnel... Is there a possibility air can leak here? I did a lot of tests. Blowing air with and without the straws etc. And indeed, without the straws and while blowing very hard (like in a trumpet) I was able to feel some air escape from around the LCD! I don't know if this is because the buddy rim itself is not airtight or because the tunnel has a gap. I know this is not a realistic use case but please DaVinci, clarify this issue. We want 100% confidence that we can't vape the batteries and circuit board!

I thought about possible solutions to this problem (or if you say it's not a problem, then solutions that would at least ease the minds of the paranos like me and others on this forum that thrive for vapor purity) For instance, a very simple solution that would completely eliminate any possibility of this problem ever occurring would be to release a special longer bottom glass straw (exactly same shape, just longer). It would stick out of the top of the device like one inch or more (and you wouldn't need the upper straw then, just one single glass piece going from the bowl top to your mouth) Of course it would be breakable and hard to transport, it could also get hot when used too long, but it would kill all critics.

Another solution would be to have a real GonG glass kit. The upper straw would not slide anymore, you would have to unplug it, but it would stick to the bottom straw via a real ground glass connection. Again, no possible leak, perfect.

A third solution would to to provide some kind of silicone O-ring but it would tend to slide away and that would be inpractical. A cheap man solution would be to add a safety "patch" of silicone inside the "tunnel" where the two pieces meet. A real man solution would be to fix this tunnel issue altogether!

The recent wave of electrical wire failures (aka my Ascent doesn't heat up anymore issue)

Thank you DaVinci for reporting officially the problem. Do you think there is a chance it could be user serviceable? Will my device be affected? How can I mitigate the issue? If for instance I never open the bowl at more than 90° (vs the full possible 180°) will it help reduce the strain on the wire?

I can't combust (aka high temp full extraction issue)

Ok so this is not a bad thing but even at max temp I can not combust. I might still have to perfect my technique, but I feel I'm not able to extract past a certain point if I started the session low (170°C+) and slowly raised the temp by stages. I get a lot of vapor around 195°C (~380°F) but when I deplete this "level" and raise the temperature, I'm usually not able to extract much more.

In the end the ABV is pretty even, I've never had any black spot, but it's lighter than what I know is possible to achieve. That being said, when starting directly at high temperatures, I managed to get it pretty dark once or twice, but at the cost of a more pronounced popcorn taste. Maybe I need to practice more, anyone has advices to help me extract what's left past the "danger zone" temperature bar?

Vapor quality (aka I have no issue)

At this point you might ask why I started my review by saying that I love my Ascent? Well because I'm just a perfectionist and apart from the glass on gap issue, don't get me wrong, I'm just bitching about details because I want DaVinci to keep improving their already excellent product. Clearly this is a winner in my book. The taste is incredible for a portable, it's pretty efficient at extracting, doesn't burn my material, hardly gets any strong popcorn taste.

You need to keep it clean though and it's harder than your average glass piece because salt grains barely fit inside the bottom straw. So far the best solution I've found is to remove 90% of a cotton swab material (just leave the stick with a small plume of cotton around) and stick it in and out. But once you're done, the taste is like new and you can enjoy the flavors fully again.

Having a short direct-draw path, vapor can get a bit hot (but this was expected)

You can't have it all I guess, I must admit that it's a problem with all portables in general, the vapor has little time to cool down before it reaches your throat. As others reported, using the water tool adapter as a substitute for a long straw could help the problem.

DaVinci, could you please release more glass accessories? A longer upper straw (straight or why not with a chamber of some kind) or why not a longer out-sticking bottom straw as I evoked in the gap issue? But maybe this is asking too much and already departing from what the device was designed for: stealth and portability...

Is the Ascent for you?

If you already own a Solo or a Pinnacle Pro and are satisfyed with it, I don't think you need the Ascent. If you have a Pax, I think you would see an improvement. If you have any other portable (or if you have none yet), then yes definitely, the Ascent will delight you and I can only recommend it!

IMHO the Ascent wins overs the PNP for form factor and style, and the Ascent wins over the Solo for ease of draw / airflow, but this reflects my personal tastes only.

If you expect the Ascent to be a party vape and plan to use it to rip bongs and the like, I think you will feel disappointed. It can't reach combustion temps, needs a rather slow draw etc. I think it's more a one or two persons max device, for direct draw use on the go when you can't use your desktop vape.

Conclusion

I'm enthralled, welcome to the future and thank you DaVinci!

Nice, informative post Kero. I too would like to see some Glass attachments exclusively for the Ascent, especially some type of a fitted glass puck for the bowl, a substitute for the glass flowers and beads. A nice one piece glass insert would solve a lot of problems instead of having to deal with the tiny flowers and beads. As for the air leaks, my unit leaks from the top rubber seal. I also think its leaking from the LED readout but I haven't verified that yet. It's not a huge concern but I can't help thinking that if it was completely airtight it would work better. On the subject of vaping oils, although I haven't tried any oil in my Ascent I do think a glass globe and ego variable voltage battery is the way to go. I've never heard of anyone vaping oil in the Ascent with good results yet. I haven't tried it yet because I'm worried that it might muck up the unit. The pen and globe setup has worked extremely well for me: it's fairly cheap, very fast and easy, and really gets the job done. The single thing that I think would satisfy a lot of Ascent customers would be some glass accessories, especially a custom fitted glass flower of some type.

Has someone tried to use BHO in the Ascent ?

I have found that the ascent will vape straight oil, just not in a way that is very satisfying. I can't get huge rips, but over a period of time the oil will be consumed.... just not in the cloud producing manner that I am used to.

BUT.. sandwiching a (small!) dab between two layers of herb? That is tasty.

@KeroZen - Welcome and thanks for your review. A lot of good stuff in there.

(And I'm especially fond of the part where you said you actually read the thread before posting. Oh, the novelty of that thought!! :p )

If you expect the Ascent to be a party vape and plan to use it to rip bongs and the like

The biggest uphill battle I have is trying to re-edumacate the skull-f'-ripping-b-load friends of mine to be less about the destination and more about the journey.

I've said before: This is more about savoring a fine cognac than a line of shots on a Floridain bar-top during spring break.
:)

It can't reach combustion temps

Uh.... you *have* read the site's URL, right?

When my herb comes out of the Ascent it's usually too dark to do anything with the ABV.
They have a cooking with cannabis thread. I saw a hot chocolate with ABV recipe.

@nigel : yes I remember your cognac comparison somewhere earlier in the thread. It was one of the few positive posts I read that made me think it was the right decision to buy the Ascent.

Apparently I wasn't clear enough in my "can't combust" part. Of course I'm not trying to achieve combustion at all (and I'm in the process of quitting all forms of combustion altogether, wish me good luck because it will be harder for me as I will have to withdraw from nicotine at the same time...yeah those tiny bits I put in my joints, they count)

It's just that when putting my device at max temp I can't get the ABV black, how hard I try. So maybe it's my technique or my device runs a bit cold, I don't know. Some people complain to have spots in their ABV that are darker than what they wish (with other vaporizers), for me it's rather the contrary, I'm under the impression it's slightly under-extracted at times.

I usually start the session at 177°C (350°F) to do the "flave" run, where the vapor is not super thick but the taste is heavenly. I get a lot of hits at this temp and keep going until there's no vapor anymore. Then depending on how fast I want the session to be, I either raise to 185°C (365°F) and get a kinda intermediate stage that doesn't last very long but is enjoyable too, or I go directly to the 3rd stage, the cruise temperature (195°C / 383°F) where I get the most serious and thick vapor. This 3rd stage is the most productive and lasts very long.

Once the 3rd stage is depleted, I can raise to about 200°C/392°F and the vapor turns white (it's blueish below that bar) and the taste starts to be less enjoyable... But this is where I have the problem I reported: from that moment (the 4th stage) I can only extract one, two or maybe three little hits max, then vapor stops. At that point I tried everything, I can't extract further. Tried raising to max temp, but no, it's super wispy and starts to get popcorny but there's no serious vapor and once or twice only I managed to get the ABV very dark at this point but because I insisted for a very long time (ie I had to work it hard to get there, and I'm unsure if it's not just the bowl that cooked it vs me really extracting something)

So usually I stop at the end of stage 3, never reaching the 392°F "danger zone" as I like to call it (because it's the Benzene boiling point and past that point...well you know...), because I feel it's not worth the effort / ROI... but in the end my ABV is more tobacco color than coffee color if you see what I mean.

Anyone has an idea? Am I doing something wrong or if this is normal?

EDIT: I forgot to precise I never stir the bowl as the color seems really even without doing it, and I tried stirring for stage 4 but that barely made any difference IMHO

Are you using any glass bead or glass flower inside for heat distribution, that could help. You might bump up the temp earlier on. Try starting at different temps, then go up from there. I usually top off at between 400 and 410 depending on the herb. If the vapor is too harsh I turn down the temp.
