I'm looking forward to your budda/wax review .

munch...I'm having that kief sammich and it's working great. a small layer of herb, couple of scoops of kief, another light layer, then tamped down to about half a bowl. it's hitting as well as last night and tastes better with the herb than the cotton (herb is adding a nice taste). I put just enough herb on the bottom to keep the kief from getting to the holes and just enough on top to not have the kief stick to my finger.

My review of the new "Ascent" PV from Davinci:

hey mr. thompson,

was wondering if this would work? i bought one of these a week ago (hasnt arrived yet) but it says "hard shell case" & its only $3 with free shipping...was gonna use it on my portable battery pack (for iphone/usb stuff)...but now might get another or a few others for various things (before you FC people buy them all up!!!)...

by the way, it comes in 2 sizes: 4" & 3" so make sure you select the bigger one...& ive bought from this website once before & it was safe (just stating this cuz i never heard of it prior) but use a 2ndary email addy cuz u will get email deals a few times a week...

what do you think? is there any way u could do a size photo of the ascent with, say, an iphone?

& do you think this case would fit?

^ - might cut down on smells
^ - nice to throw in your backpack
x - will be a pain to throw in your pocket

thanks a bunch.

My review of the new "Ascent" PV from Davinci:

If the accuracy of the battery meter is the only fault he finds then I'm sold. The absolute preciseness of the battery meter is not of importance to me as I've never had a complaint with the battery life of my DV. My only concern is reliability. I'll still wait a few months after the selling begins just to see what shakes out in relation to reliability (I'm on my third DV in 5 months), but this will be my goto vape if reliable.

May I ask why and how thats happened?
Why? I don't know why but I have my suspicions. How? Normal usage. The first one lasted 24 hours, used it for 1 hour. The symptoms were the digital display reading approx 900, was not adjustable, no heat action, the red light would blink erratically. Da Vinci was very prompt at sending me a replacement. The second lasted 4 months, died one month ago, the symptom this time was totally dead. Again Da Vinci was very prompt at sending me a replacement. I am an electrical engineer and admire the design and quality feel of the item, the performance is absolutely incredible when functioning. Hopefully all the bugs have been worked out of this latest replacement (has the magnetic door latch). I baby the item, never dropped, used daily for maybe 15 minutes. Time will tell.

Might wanna try putting a little better pack on your herbs too from what I've read.

I am never one to pack down a bowl in a vaporizer. I find that looser herbs are better and create more surface area and better air flow.

However, I just took your advice and gave packing a try with the Ascent and wow ! This thing is kicking out vapor big time now. And much more throat hit. Thank you ! I will defiantly address this in my final thoughts video.

FYI - For a conduction vape, a tight pack with a fine grind should give you the best results since the heat can reach the entire load quicker. Loose packs usually work best for convection vapes. Yeah, sorry if I am being mr. obvious here, just trying to help.

Just what I was going to say, so it seems like the Ascent might even be more conduction than convection... or maybe 50/50

Well, they should call this the "Tyson" now because it's hitting like a champ and laying me out.

I did several sessions last night with kiff. First I tried strait kiff inside the glass oil jar with the silicon lid. Not very good airflow that way and weak vapor. Amazing flavor though for what little vapor there was. Then I tried in the jar with no lid and that was a little better, but still weak vapor. Then I tried kiff without the glass jar and that worked great. I figured if I put kiff strait in the bowl, some would fall out the small air flow holes under the bowl. So I put a thin layer of herbs down first, then a scoop of kiff. This worked very well. I have never tasted kiff like that, what a great pure flavor. And not much of the kiff was left over after the session, I guess not many impurities left over since kiff is pretty much just the good stuff that you would be vaping off the plant matter anyways.

VST - Have you had a chance to test with any wax yet? We still don't have a decent review on that aspect.

I think it's worth stating that if 'big clouds' is the goal with at least some pure convection vapes (Cera and T1 come to mind) packing plays an important role. Not only is more surface area (and more herb) in play but in some cases, like T1, a loose pack causes hot air to dry the bud along the 'weakest path' further opening that path up. The result is 'tracking' in the bowl, the hot air runs up a few channels roasting the herb on the walls of those channels past done before the rest gets hot.

IMO a guy should always experiment with grind and packing.

Thats great to hear. I know you are big on the Solo so comparing the Ascent to the Solo.. if you separate hits does your herb cook or can you space them out like on the Solo?

It will cook some. But it also likes to have a little bit of time between hits to build up the conduction/radiation vapor again. If you chain hit it, you won't get the hits you will if you give it a rest between hits. You don't want to wait too long, or it will cook, but that's when the auto shutoff feature comes in. I had a glass cleaning session the other night and was hitting this thing throughout. As any good medicating would do, I forgot about it twice and both times it was already off.

I think the following is happening...the shape and depth of the bowl create a pretty good amount of radiation heat, similar to the mflb, but I think even more so. So while the conduction is cooking the edges touching the bowl, radiation is working on the middle. I'm not sure which method I think is producing the most vapor, but I think convection is third. Whatever they are doing, it works.

The bottom line is this has become my go-to portable and it medicates me more and quicker than my others due to a quick heat up time and a large, accommodating bowl.

Sounds like you have retired your solo, Pinnacle, for the ascent sticks.
Must be a good vape ever since I've been on this site your solo has been your go to portable, so hats off to a new era.
Cheers, medical mark

I have a question for our esteemed Ascent review trio, Sticks, Slim and THR. Do you guys think a burn off is necessary before first use to alleviate any factory smell/taste, or is it good to go out of the box?

I've heard about reliability problems with the original DV. Does anyone know if they used the same manufacturer for the Ascent? It does look like a nice vape.

Anyone notice the latest photo on DV's FB page? It has a pic of an Ascent in front of a movie poster for World War Z.. That pic just happens to have a release date of June 21st shown in the frame.. Hmmm....

edit - Oops. just realized I am speculating. Sorry mods!

Yeah I noticed that :) here's hoping.

Also wondering if DV have used the same manufacturer as the original Da Vinci? I am one of the unlucky ones that went through 3 units in as many weeks and didn't risk a 4th before getting my Solo. Reliability is key for me. The OLED screen looks much better on the ascent than the DV. Time will tell though really as the original DV has only been out for just over a year.
