Looks like it is time for the old man to pop out of his cave for a bit. We have had a good deal of snow in the last few days and the temp is staying around 20. That yearly transition is getting tougher every year but the neat part is after a few days of it, we do the adjustment with a smile. After all, it is Mother doing her thing. Zaplady just hollered "snowing again". For those who do not know, we are in the mountains of North Idaho, at the end of a road one mile from the highway. The last 1/2 mile of road is ours to maintain besides everything around the house and shop and the road over to our sons house. Winter gets busy or we do not get out. I fight that every year with lousy attitude when it happens, then mellow to reality. We are at the mellow stage now so all is well. We also have our 37 year young son here to do the heavy lifting and he does an incredible job. We would have to consider moving without him here. It takes more work to be country. Much 'free time' is spent keeping all the flows humming. Even the chickens need more attention as they cannot get out to eat grass and bugs and worms. They almost hibernate this time of the year. We have to get in and remind them they also have a job to do.
This year we have added bovines to the mix. We have three(mama and a couple steers). Now there is an amazing animal, converting grass to meat so efficiently. I love to watch them chew their cud. They are in a trance and it can be blistering 90 or 10 degrees with snow and they do it the same all the time. So calm. So tough yet so gentle. We do have a special thing going with them. We even spent the first couple days of the first big snow building them some extra shelter for feeding and loafing. Also a good spot to have a couple wireless cameras on them for some of our entertainment.
Not much news on the Zap front. We are beginning to mix up the show with some wholesale here and there. When the time is right, we will announce some of that info here but for now it is just trod along the same well beaten path.
That path will get more interesting in the next few weeks as we will have some nice Christmas pretties in the pipeline. More Redwood and Sumac and maybe some Myrtle Burl among other stuff coming down the trail.
We have found some slight variation in vape temp related to wood density, even with the insulated heatport design. If we leave too much of the denser wood around the middle of the unit, vape temps will be slightly lower. We have a beautiful walnut that was returned for 'wispy' performance and replaced. That walnut is now being used by Zaplady regularly and actually works fine but does not put out those massive thick clouds some folks like. Our log vape is still in the mid to higher vape temp range with most of them running in the higher mid range. On occasion a few will go very high with a thinner wood shell made from a low density wood. If you want consistent massive milky clouds with more herb consumption, the RockZap may not be for you.
We have disassembled a few for a good exam and still find zero charring of any wood around the heater 'core' which was the main goal of changing to the insulated design.
And now, a couple shots of what we wake up to every morning now that winter has set in. We are in a 'bowl' as you can see. Kind of a cave but an outside cave. So very quiet this time of the year too with hunting season mostly over and all the summer tourists back in their warmer climate. Still a few birds chirping, crows always crowing and turkeys clucking, even though they are staying high in the trees.
out the back slider, due south
same but around to the west, out the bathroom picture window
and out the kitchen window, NW. Our sons place is in the trees above the old shop, now used for storage. That is the top of Zapladys Polish Golf cart we use to get around the place you see in front.
We love each season and are very happy to be somewhere with all four seasons each very strong and real.
That is all second growth timber, most in the 60-80+foot range. Shots were taken early in the morning with very little light.
