Hi guys,

I've had my Solo for just over a year now--I chose it based on recommendations from this forum and it has served me amazingly well. However, I've had two incidences in the past week of the glass tube coming out as I'm vaping and burning me. I can't really tell if the stems feel looser than they used to, but this never happened before and I haven't changed my vaping habits in any way. Would installing an O ring help with this, d'you think? Or is there a better solution?

Many thanks!

It should yeah, some of my stems would slip out easily without it, now it doesn't happen. Interestingly enough, the Air GonG stem that's on puffitup also works for the Solo but the damn thing is just too small and even with the o-ring it slips out easily.

Glass is not exact. I have a bent tip stem that's a bit "fat", and won't fall out of my solo. Some of the stock stuff is pretty tight. I find Joda stems to be much tighter, and there is also the O rings that you can install to keep the stem a bit more stable. The other thing you can do, is use the cap. Rotate it 180 degrees so it rests up against the stem with some pressure as it's bent back. Works pretty good. If you ever get into the AA, the fit is much more snug (and a bit less airflow).

Hello, everyone!
Browsing this forum and thread has lead to me purchasing my first solo, which is on its way now :brow:
I just wanted to thank the community here for providing so much information! That there are so many enthusiasts here gave me the confidence I needed to purchase the unit.

Anyway, just one question for the wise ones. I know my answer is somewhere in the previous pages, but.. What should I do with my unit right out of the box? I heard somewhere I'm supposed to overcharge it? Is there anything else I should know to promote a long life for my solo? Thanks!

I think as long as you charge your new Solo unit to full, it should be perfectly fine. People often believe that contemporary batteries have a built-in memory effect, but this is a misconception since they are referring to the old-school batteries that had those technological problems. All rechargeable batteries should be lithium-based, and have no memory effect whatsoever. Charge it to full the first time, but use it/recharge it whenever you feel like it afterward.

I think a 6- 8 hour charge initially is what @OF suggests. It can't hurt if there is something to it. You are thinking about the lifetime of the battery which could be 3 years or longer. The battery will degrade over time. My battery had over 2 hours of use when I first got it. It's a year and a half old and it lasts around about an hour 6 ten minute sessions. The battery can be replaced by the owner. There is a video around showing how.

I would suggest grinding your cannabis to the consistency that works for you. I prefer grinding because that gives more surface space that's vaporized. Some folks use small nuggets. I use a medium grind. Don't pack your cannabis because it needs adequate air flow.

It's good to have more than one vaporizer, just in case. You don't want to go back to combustion if your vaporizer quit working. The Solo is pretty sturdy and well made so we don't see too many faulty units. You just never know when you might need a backup.

If you want a water tool in the future you will need a GonG. Water tools either need a 14mm or 18mm size.

Just relax and enjoy what the Solo has to offer. You have made a wise investment.

First off, Howdy! Welcome to the forum, lots of good folks with sound advice and experience to share as you've discovered. Great choice with Solo, IMO, you're in good company.

Battery lifespan is, I think, a logical concern. You can, of course, treat it like a cell phone and accept it's going to wear the battery down in a year or two. If you want to get longest lifetime from the battery (more important in units like this where the user can't replace them than in say Air), by all means start with that 'overcharge' before you discharge it at all. No cheating. It's just one time, four or more hours past 'full'. It only counts the first cycle (the opportunity is gone with the first discharge), but it sets the maximum capacity.

Never fully charge the battery unless you're going to immediately run a session or better two. Simple storage at full charge will kill the battery quickly with no real work being done. This is typically what condemns cell phone and laptop batteries (being kept 'full charged and ready to go'). Simply stopping the charge at 90% (rather than 100) will DOUBLE the number of cycles. Contrast say 300 Cycles at 8 sessions per to 600 cycles at 7. 2400 sessions against 4200. Drop it to 80% and it doubles again. Now it's more like 1200 cycles at 6 per, 7200 sessions before replacement. Check out the stuff around table 4:
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries

My advice for routine use is to run the charge down, even to 'just one more session' after the battery level lights all go out (there's about 30% safety margin still, but don't press it) then charge again. If you can, stop the charge early, ideally with the 7 light 'just lit' but the charge light merrily flashing away.

Because of this I made a 'gadget' to automatically shut down the charge 'early'. The latest version looks like this:
jy0w0hN.jpg

When you push the switch lower right, the transistor above it turns on supplying charging out the cable to the Solo. The processor, lower left, monitors the charging current against the value set by the blue pot above the switch. Power comes in upper left (the usual Solo charger plugs in there). When the reduced charge is done the beeper alerts you before the processor stops the process.

Your call, of course. But IMO the battery is worth treating well. I make the effort with mine and I have a couple spare packs and lots of parts to make more.

One last caution, I advise not using the 'charge while using' feature, it's not a pass through, it still works the battery. And it opens the possibility you'll leave it charging after the session and therefore go to 100%. Hammering a 'dead' battery this way does a lot of damage, charge it a while first before using it. This problem (hammering a dead battery with this feature) was also found to kill ESV batteries so reliably that the current software upgrade removes that function. Again, your call.

Charge it to full the first time, but use it/recharge it whenever you feel like it afterward.

I obviously don't agree, for the above reasons. Your call as well, of course.

Best regards to all.

Thank you all for the info and tips- I really appreciate it all! I will have to look into the GonG so I can run it through some water and I will definitely be following your battery advice, OF. Oh, and CarolKing, I do have a backup- my mflb will be playing second fiddle now. When it comes to daily driver position...

Welcome on board to all the new Solo owners. This unit is easy to operate and there's no learning curve involved. There are many happy Soloists to testify to the virtues of this unit. You will enjoy the flavor and the money you will save from your cannabis budget.

When I've bought a bubbler it has just come with a gong. My favorite is one Joda made for my UD. It's perfect on the Solo. I also have one from him that PIU sold with the Air. One thing I've found helpful is a 14" to 18".

@Ratchett has SonGs that work great with the solo standard stems! The medium universal song works great and the 14/18mm adapter works as well but is a tad loose.

I just changed my first solo battery, based on @OF 's "first charge" recommendation (I blew the first opportunity). I follow ALL the OF rules, and my solo will now give me six full sessions, without draining the battery down completely, and that's only after charging 90%. Makes me like my solo even more.

-BATTERY CARE NOT IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE -
1. don't let battery get hot, as when leaving in hot car (keep cool) = C
2. overcharge first time by 5 hours (overcharge) = O
3. never drain battery all the way (reserve) = R
4. never use while charging (don't use while charging) = D
5. undercharge from then on (under charge to about 90%) = 90

CORD 90 - BATTERY CARE ACRONYM (love acronyms, as does the FDNY)

My favorite has always been the one about Unlawful Carnal Knowledge........ We even adopted it for a Forum name.....

I once worked with a Cambridge educated Brit PhD, quite proper. He had a 'Certificate of Membership' (complete with seal) attesting to his being a Charter Member of the 'Royal Society to Eliminate TLAs'. At the bottom it defined 'TLA' as Three Letter Acronym. Too long on too small an island I think? Leads also to making funny cars that don't work in the rain and drinking warm beer as well it seems.

A 'Techniques of Teaching' text I had to read years back explained the value of acronyms for 'stress education' in adults by pointing out that while adults learn skills in small steps by building on the skills they have/know, children learn by rote. Kids learn to multiply numbers by memorizing a table first. But they have to actually understand about numbers to learn Algebra and 'higher math'. The author suggested that under stress we adults loose the links and can come up short on what to do so we can fall back on the rote learning of acronyms. That, coupled with specific 'drill type' training (when this happens, do this) make a powerful pair for survival/success. The analogy (another strong tool for adult education......) is doing football drills, thinking out the response to a future situation before it happens. Makes response effective and automatic. "We play the way we practice". Fun stuff, and useful.

Regards to all,

@OF your always full of wisdom.

Being older and retired I find it a luxury to study and I enjoy reading.
My field of study is Philosophy, History, Science, Astrophysicist and Mathematics.
I believe it is a luxury to be able to study!

The SOLO is practical, reasonable and effective!
I broke out a pipe I had however a mouth full of flowers I found to be undesirable!
My SOLO was easier to use and gave a much better result!

Your "GIZMO" is making my SOLO last!

they say im crazy but i have a good time
... I've been vaping pretty much exclusively for the last 2-2.5 years. Before Vaping i loved the bong(let's face it, who didn't/doesn't:shrug:).

anyways, since I've been 'smoke' free I've yet use a water attachment  IDK why, i guess i never felt the need to with water filter vapour.
I really love seeing all these water attachments for basically every vape out there and reminds me of my bong daze. I feel the need that i gotta get back into water toys :brow:

I've been really eyeing up the f-bomb. I would most likely go with the 18mm because that seems to be standard size, and maybe down the road i'd be able to use it off the solo.

Is the F-bomb the way to go ? (seems to be "the" attachment)
Is 18mm also the way to go?

Thanks
:peace:

The F bomb is the knockoff of the pinnacle tube which i have.
They are nice and small, the sit on top of the SOLO and that can be a danger with leakage if you are not careful. Also its not that comfortable to use if your relaxing on a couch. You have to lean right up over the top to keep everything vertical but otherwise its a lovely piece.
They do come up on the classifieds a bit.
I seldom use glass, prefer a nice stem instead.

Actually it's not filtering..... If you think about it, a tiny fraction of the vapor actually contacts water to start with, and surely particle size (the traditional rating on filters) is not a factor. At best you might call a WT a "trap", and a mighty poor one at that? Most of the vapor never contacts water, let alone has to fit though a small hole as in a filter.

Rather, I think, two things are happening of major interest: cooling and moisturizing. Some of the terpenes and waxes also get trapped (THC isn't....) which may not always be a good thing. For many of us, the added moisture is key.

Anyway, PWT/F-bomb is probably a good choice, but takes some care as it spills easily. Therefore some favor 'table top' units. I'd go with 14mm (more vape stuff fits I think), then for instance you can buy the $10 step for Air and put that in your Solo, 14mm GonG fittings mate with the plastic top (like they planned it...).

You can get copies of the PWT from DHgate for cheap, about $15 shipped the last time I bought one IIRC.
